After all those years of waiting, Black Myth: Wukong is a very good adventure game. Using a setting that rarely gets seen in the Western world makes the game intriguing, and that's strengthened when you discover all of the character background stories. The combat is just as varied as the environments you traverse, and while the game isn't as masochistic as other modern action games, it is difficult enough that a little patience and planning will still take you a long way in skirmishes. The presentation is amazing, but it stresses out even the best hardware at the moment. To optimize the gorgeous graphics in Black Myth, players need beefy hardware that can take advantage of various upscaling technologies. It is a worthy pick-up for patient adventure fans, and the title will keep players busy for quite some time.

While Wukong is not a bad game, it's nowhere near the greatness of genre-defining titles like Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3, both over a decade old at this point. Moments of Wukong play it so safe, it feels like a product predating the iconic outings made by From Software.

Black Myth: Wukong is an ambitious addition to the action RPG genre, offering a visually stunning interpretation of Chinese mythology (and for monkey fans, too). While it presents technical and design challenges that may affect the player experience, its intense combat, rich setting, and faithfulness to the literary source material provide an engaging journey for those willing to take on its challenges. For players who enjoy deep storytelling and challenging combat, Black Myth: Wukong offers a unique experience worth exploring.

Black Myth: Wukong is an adventure that pays tribute to the original work, inviting us to discover the Chinese mythology with an amazing graphics and action-packed gameplay. Game Science managed to give life to a magnificent adaptation that seems far from finished and that respects the original material in great detail. While it is true that the story is not told in a very clear way and that it suffers from technical problems, we cannot deny that on the other side of the scale we find an excellent title, with a combat system full of possibilities and a scandalous artwork.

Black Myth: Wukong is worth every second invested. It's a really big and ambitious game, and it brought a new look to a mechanic that, despite being excellent, has been overused.

Black Myth: Wukong is a game that, while not without flaws, cannot be denied its above-average result. From the narrative to the audio-visual aspects, this is an adventure that fans of action RPGs should not miss. However, don't expect it to break new ground within the genre. There's no (r)evolution to be found here. But that doesn't matter when the result is still a game you can't get enough of even after finishing it.

The more you dig deeper, the more you realize that it's the result of a team that loves what they do, and with respect to the source material.

Overall, Black Myth: Wukong is a very high-quality game that can be enjoyed even if you're not a fan of Souls-like titles. While it sometimes has uneven quality, it still feels like one of the best games of the year and will only improve over time.

Black Myth: Wukong is the most anticipated action RPG of the year and impresses with its variety of bosses. The world is full of loving details and impresses in all its splendour. With a playing time of just under 35 hours, the main story is played through and invites you to start a new cycle or to explore the missed bosses or unfinished quests after playing through the 6 chapters. Apart from the technical flaws, Black Myth: Wukong is a fantastic game and lives up to its hype, even if it was a little too easy for my taste.

Much of what Black Myth: Wukong promised, it delivers: spectacular visuals, a reenactment of Sun Wukong’s story, and a swift, seamless combat style. On the other hand, the game’s plot and storytelling lean far too heavily on knowledge of the source material, Journey to the West, which may alienate those unfamiliar with it.

It is safe to say that Game Science, and by extension China, have made their mark in the world of video games with Black Myth: Wukong. While the game excels in proudly showcasing and introducing the country's culture to a global audience with an absolutely beautiful and detail-ridden rendition of mythological China, it is not a full adaptation of Journey to the West in video game form. If battling boss after boss isn’t your thing, this game might not be for you. Otherwise, it has plenty to offer to the fans of the genre. However, the absence of some key elements makes it fall short of the exceptional experience that Black Myth: Wukong can offer.

The success of Black Myth Wukong is proof enough of its quality. Yes, the game is not flawless, which is to be expected as it is Game Science's first AAA game, but the game's excellent adaptation of of Journey To The West , fun gameplay, and superb visual presentation make Black Myth Wukong a very promising start to the Chinese AAA market.

Black Myth: Wukong is, without a doubt, worth buying. It has an incredible story, along with fantastic combat and beautiful locations and designs, despite the issues of the frames. But they should’ve simmered down on the number of boss fights. Game of the Year 2024? Sure – there’s enough to this to make it into the conversation.

Black Myth: Wukong doesn't do anything particularly new, its gameplay is heavily inspired by FromSoftware's work, and its technical quality can drop to miserable levels, but if you can get past that, the skill and artistic ingenuity in this Chinese Souls-like game is irresistible.

While not a soulslike the way FromSoftware makes them, Black Myth Wukong is a great game with gripping boss fights, gorgeous area's and excellent combat, although the tech struggles to keep up occasionally.

Despite its flaws, Black Myth Wukong’s positives do far outweigh them and I never felt like they made me want to stop playing the game. Overall it’s a strong action RPG experience for those looking for something a little less souls like and something closer to a character action game. It’s a great first outing from game science and given it’s wild success so far a sequel of some kind seems like a no brainer. With some refinement, follow ups could prove to be something really special.

Black Myth: Wukong uses the wonderful canvas of Chinese mythology to draw you into its world that is both beautiful and dangerous. Struggling at times to fully tell its story, its narrative mostly gives the game structure while leaving out a lot of detailed substance hoping for you to somehow make it make sense. Sure, the game’s emphasis is combat, but for a soulslike game that looks this beautiful and has so much lore attached to it, you would hope it also spent more time focusing on its story.

Black Myth: Wukong is an amazing and impressive debut effort from Game Science, and while it has a few missteps, it lives up to the hype. From the gorgeous visuals to the dynamic and intense combat system, few games can replicate the satisfying feeling of conquering a challenging boss, only to face another one a few moments later. Interestingly, the game can be played on the Steam Deck, but there are concessions you'll have to make, especially in the visual department. You're losing out on a huge chunk of the experience because the game is gorgeous, but it's better than not getting to play it on the go, which in itself is a remarkable feat.
