The technical side of the game was buggy at certain parts of the story during my playthrough, but the game truly flourishes when it centers around storytelling.

If you own or take care of a pet – or if you have kids who’d like a pet – do yourself a favor and play Copycat in one sitting. Make sure you have tissues ready.

Copycat shoots for the stars with its narrative ambitions, delivering an emotional, introspective experience that will have you reflecting on your relationship to the animals and people in your life. It goes to some truly unexpected places, some of which are questionable, but all of which are compelling. Despite the pieces not quite coming together in perfect harmony, this is an experience that will stick with you for a long time.

The gaming equivalent of an alleycat: it's rough around the edges, but you'll learn to grow fond of it despite its numerous quirks.‍

Despite some troubled animations and controls, Copycat plays its emotional journey excellently. As a cat owner and someone who has lived somewhat similar events in recent times, its tale of love and loss hit hard, but was a journey worth taking.

Copycat has visual charm and enjoyable cat-based gameplay, but with a short runtime and poorly executed story, it isn't worth your time, especially if you love cats.

Copycat is just an emotional rollercoaster of a story-driven game that is a bit harsh on the reality of truth. I know that talking about the story would be a huge spoiler for anyone who loves cats or wants to experience a rather cruel turn of events, but it would be worth it if you want to try out Copycat for yourself. Just don’t forget that everything will turn out to be better, eventually…

As a game it shouldn’t be one to expect in-depth action from, but the interactivity you do have provides a great backdrop for a charming tale. It may seem asinine for a game this short to be worth the $15 price, but stories like this with shelter animals are seldom expressed in gaming, and for an honest to god effort and a lot of fun moments I really enjoyed a good chunk of Copycat and it had me go “aw!” many times.

Copycat stands out for its emotional depth, touching sensible, universal themes, like neglect and the true meaning of home. Dawn's story, as a cat that faces many adversities, can create empathy and profound reflection about the eonnection between humans and pets. A surefire recommendation for those who value compelling, moving stories. However, despite a captivating plot, the game suffers from technical issues that compromise the gameplay. Sluggish movement, troublesome camera, and limited animation hinder the experience as a whole, which is a shame considering the emotional potential of its plot.

Copycat stands out as a beautifully crafted narrative experience, notable for its emotional storytelling and enchanting presentation. Although the gameplay may not be the most intricate, its capacity to resonate emotionally with players renders it an unforgettable adventure.

Copycat is made to pull at your heartstrings, which is what it will do. The gameplay is the least effective part of the game, but an experience held together so tightly by narrative, such as this one, can get away with this. There are enough fun elements to look past this, and the story is worth enjoying.

Help back by some clunky and tedious design elements, this is still a narrative worth sinking your claws into.

Copycat is without a doubt one of the biggest surprises of the year. The game, which appeared out of nowhere, stole my heart and reminded me about the important values in life that we should always keep in mind.

With gnomes to break and dark themes to navigate, Copycat is quick and simple, yet emotional, narrative about love and loss.

Without a doubt, Copycat is a masterpiece of narrative-driven gaming, featuring a story that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you emotionally invested. It is a game that is deeply Australian yet universally relatable, and one that will leave you still crying, long after the credits roll.

Copycat is a uniquely cat-perspective narrative game that tells a heartwarming and, at times, heart-wrenching story that cat lovers and owners should resonate with. However, it is a bit weak on the gameplay side and will often hold your hand and guide you through the story it wants you to experience.

Ultimately, Copycat is a game about loss, heartbreak and finding a place to call home even when it feels like there isn’t one. Despite the simplistic design, Copycat takes minor moments and makes them bigger than a game about a cat should be able to. The care and attention to tone and messaging has made this one of the best games I’ve played in 2024. It’s the perfect addition to the library of any narrative game fan.
