At the end of the day, your mileage with Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO will vary. I found myself bored as often as I was excited and frustrated as often as I was exhilarated. For fans who simply want to relive the glory of their childhood with Budokai Tenkaichi, there might be enough here to draw them in. For folks looking for a continuation of the depth that FighterZ added or the beat-em-up fun of a Kakarot or Xenoverse style game, I do not see Sparking! ZERO scratching that itch for you.

I cannot say enough positive things about Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO. In my opinion, there hasn’t been a better representative for the product in the whole history of the franchise. It has more depth than a traditional arena fighter, and that goes such a long way to staving off the repetitive nature of the genre. While your mileage may vary somewhat depending on how much you like the source material, I feel it would still be very fun even if you didn’t know what was going on, and if you love Dragon Ball you’ll be hard-pushed to find a better celebration of this much-loved franchise than in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero represents the definitive title in the saga created by Akira Toriyama. The work done by Spike Chunsoft is truly remarkable, bringing to light a project designed to entertain all fans of the series, allowing them to simulate the epic clashes of the anime thanks to a three-dimensional structure and a vast roster. All this is topped off by sufficiently technical gameplay that allows for dynamic and unpredictable matches. Of course we are not at the levels of other fighting games (Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6 or Dragon Ball: FighterZ itself) but on the other hand the aim of Sparking! Zero is not to have gameplay aimed at the competitive side.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero has a steep learning curve that’ll take a few hours to get to grips with, but its exhilarating combat and gorgeous visuals make the time investment worthwhile. There’s plenty of depth and strategy to combat to ensure that battles are authentic and action-packed – and sure, it takes some time to figure each mechanic out, but it makes for a frantic and super fun experience when you do. Add to that the cool game modes, the wealth of content, and the beautiful visuals, and it’ll be clear that Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a real hit for both Dragon Ball and fighting game fans.

Bandai Namco and Spike Chunsoft have hit it out the park with this new entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series! Sparking! ZERO is a massive love letter to the 40 years worth of Dragon Ball. I love all of the new additions to the game such as the what-if Sparking! Episodes! Everything from the beautiful graphics to the downright incredible soundtrack kept me coming back for more! Despite the game’s minor shortcomings, this game still made me feel like I did all those years ago playing Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on PS2 with my older brother.

It's great to feel that Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO has managed to rescue this very clear, yet abstract concept of what makes Dragon Ball what it is, something that the Budokai Tenkaichi of the past managed to achieve without even thinking too much. Even with its flaws, saying that this is a game "more for the fans" is to diminish the very concise product that it is. Thank goodness, in this case, that Dragon Ball has a ton of fans around the world, right?

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a dream come true for fans of the series, bringing back the beloved Budokai Tenkaichi series in all its glory to modern platforms. Fights are flashy and fun, while its immense roster of characters is enough to satisfy players looking for a fighting game fix. It's not without its faults, and the game's story mode could have used a bit more love. While the story arcs of Dragon Ball have been replayed and retold to death, the rushed retelling of important events misses an opportunity to onboard newcomers. That said, this is the best Dragon Ball title we've had in a long time and is a definite pickup for those looking for an arena fighter that's not your typical anime offering. Akira Toriyama would have been proud.

Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero is exactly what fans have been clamoring for over many years—a new installment in the Budokai Tenkaichi series, with all its strengths and weaknesses. Despite the developers' efforts to rebalance many elements from the previous entries and provide a proper sense of satisfaction for those looking to improve, it remains a fighting game that leans more towards the “party game filled with brawls” genre than that of competitive, strategic fighting games. With over 180 fighters, each with three unique special moves of varying effects, balance has never been a priority for Spike Chunsoft... and that’s perfectly fine
