I’m glad Xbox decided to port Avowed to the PS5. While the combat can be repetitive in parts, and there are some bugs here and there, the overall experience is stellar. Sidequests matter in a way I haven’t seen before, and the world is fascinating to explore with loot to find all over. The game rewards you to go above and beyond, and I recommend going at a slower pace, immersing yourself in the world of Eora.
The arrival of Avowed on PlayStation 5 and the simultaneous launch of the Anniversary Update are sure to make everyone happy. First and foremost, Sony players, who can finally get their hands on one of the most solid and entertaining RPGs of the current generation. But also those who have already tackled the adventure on Microsoft platforms and want to start from scratch with New Game Plus, or those who have deliberately waited for more content to be added before trying the game. In any case, with this Anniversary Update, Avowed does not change its essence: if anything, it comes out enhanced and refined, giving us hope for future updates to Obsidian's title.

You can get lost in the world in so many ways — whether it’s the story that draws you in, the deep characters you fall in love with, or the parkour that keeps you playing, there’s so much to see and do. It may not have the most expansive map in the history of RPGs, but this adventure contains interesting exploration paths that are open to player creativity.
After a long wait and a significant scaling back of its original vision, it’s safe to say that Obsidian has delivered a solid, albeit restrained, experience with Avowed. The game successfully builds on the developer’s strengths, showcasing a strong combat system, impressive technical optimization, and a world filled with potential. However, despite these solid foundations, there is a sense that Avowed doesn’t fully capitalize on its own promise. It would be unfair to claim that Obsidian’s efforts completely miss the mark—quite the opposite. The game is undeniably well-crafted. Yet, with greater attention to finer details and a bolder approach, Avowed could have evolved into a far deeper and more memorable experience, fully realizing the considerable potential it undeniably possesses.
Despite some positive aspects, Avowed suffers from many flaws that diminish its value and make it an unsatisfying experience—not worth the five-year wait. The game lacks depth in its RPG elements, delivers an unengaging story, and offers gameplay that isn’t compelling enough to make up for these shortcomings. As a result, it’s hard to recommend Avowed at full price. Furthermore, it joins the list of titles negatively impacted by Unreal Engine 5, resulting in a final product that falls far short of expectations. That said, if your gaming options are limited at the moment, you might still find some enjoyment playing it through Xbox Game Pass.

On the other, the pointless simplification of mechanics and recurring bugs mar the experience. Is it worth playing? On Xbox and via Game Pass, yes. It's a journey no Obsidian fan should miss, if only to see Eora brought to life in 3D in a different way. I still wish the story of Avowed had connected with me because if it had, there’s a good chance I’d be looking at one of my favorite games of 2025. Even without that, however, Avowed is an excellent RPG that I had a fantastic time with and would recommend to any fan of the genre. It’s the sort of foundation that could lead to a far superior sequel if the team behind it can keep everything that works and improve on the few things that could use some work.
Avowed redefines modern RPG expectations with its refined combat and accessible design, though its narrative and character development lack depth. Prioritizing technical polish over classical RPG complexity, it carves a unique niche, flawed but undeniably entertaining, and ultimately a worthy addition to the genre.

Without necessarily venturing into something fresh, Avowed gets the brief right in the other areas of an action RPG. A wonderfully constructed world, brilliant and engaging writing, and action that is just satisfying for the most part, it is definitely comfort food for those invested in the genre. Whether playing it safe is the right way to go depends on your wants, but for an enjoyable fantasy adventure, you really cannot go wrong with Avowed.
Obsidian's smaller but more ambitious fantasy RPG offers a good dose of fun. Its unique visuals and characters ideally complete the atmosphere. However, the downside of Avowed is the static world and NPCs.
