Everyone downloaded that 120 gigabytes just for the sake of the name The Elder Scrolls, but somehow saving Cyrodiil ended up being my responsibility. And I think I might've made things even worse. Oh well, we'll fix it with some mods, right?... Right?

Bugginess and strange character design choices keep Oblivion Remastered from being excellent. Tipping the scales from “good” territory into “great” are the levelling and gameplay improvements. It resembles a remake. Even with new memory leak issues, Oblivion remains a timeless masterpiece, and this remaster ensures its legacy will live on. Oblivion was born nineteen years ago, but for all these years, it has ruled our dreams.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered isn’t a reinvention. It’s just a time capsule with a fresh coat of vibrant high-quality paint. Under the hood? It is pretty much the same beloved sandbox RPG of the early 2000s, with few of its issues fixed for this new update. Fans are advised to go straight for the purchase as long as they have a capable system. The rest are advised to wait for a price drop, some bug fixes, or preferably both.
When it released in 2006, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was an excellent game. Nearly 20 years on, it's still good — but it's certainly showing its age. This remaster makes it look incredible given how old it is, but its antiquated gameplay and numerous bugs still exist.
The world of Oblivion alone is a perfect recreation of the Dungeons & Dragons descents into hell from my tabletop days, and I had such a rush of nostalgia playing that through again. It has made me feel old to reflect on the fact that it’s a 20-year-old game and I swear I remember playing it new like it was yesterday, and nostalgia always comes with some rose-tinted glasses, but yes, I haven’t minded having the opportunity and excuse to play this again at all.
It is great to see the game that innovated many of the systems we know in modern Western RPGs being brought to the current generation systems; while looking stunning thanks to the new graphics. But this beautiful image is tainted with the bugs and technical problems

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is an excellent stopgap until The Elder Scrolls VI hits the scene. New players and fans alike shouldn't hesitate to visit Cyrodiil.

It's rare for a game to deliver the same mind-blowing impact two decades apart, but The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered pulls it off effortlessly. While the core gameplay remains unchanged, it's just as engaging and relevant in 2025 as in 2006-proof of how ahead of its time Oblivion truly was. The visuals, however, have been completely overhauled with Unreal Engine 5, giving the game a stunning new identity that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of the current ninth-generation titles. Oblivion is how you make a game, and Oblivion Remastered is how you remaster it.

Some minor technical issues aside, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is everything a fan of the series could ask for, whilst also giving newcomers the best version of the game.
The score refers only to the quality of the remaster and technical condition. Oblivion itself is still an outstanding RPG, but the PS5 version needs a lot of patches to start working properly. Well, and it's a shame that there are basically no differences between the edition for the regular PS5 and the PS5 Pro. The quality mode is useless, and the game dumping to the main menu is some kind of unpleasant joke. I will point out, however, that when everything works well, the game plays wonderfully, and the quality of the visuals can sometimes literally “blow you out of your slippers.”

Returning to Cyrodiil is a delight. Oblivion Remastered takes everything Bethesda did right in the fourth chapter of The Elder Scrolls and updates it to make it as enjoyable today as we enjoyed it almost 20 years ago. Faster load times, a redrawn world for increased visual impact, new lines of dialogue and gameplay improvements are the foundation of a very powerful experience that includes all expansions and DLC for hundreds of hours of enjoyment in Cyrodiil, Oblivion and the Realm of Madness.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered brings the same technical issues found on other platforms to Nintendo’s console, but there’s one key difference that, for me, makes all the difference: being able to explore Cyrodiil both on the TV and in the palm of your hand.
