Simon The Sorcerer Origins is a game which some will love, and some will drop off of. However, in a time of re-releases with an extra 'episode' of content tacked on to the end, it's nice to get a full-blown new game in an old franchise.

A remarkable return of graphic adventures in all their glory, one that sticks to the core gameplay while innovating here and there. Its difficulty might not be for everyone, but its humor certainly is.

The cult adventure series Simon the Sorcerer is back! But is there anything to get excited about? Not really. This bland, unsalted adventure game won't even make a dog bark in a few months.

If you’ve missed Simon as much as I have, you can nicely satisfy that longing with Simon the Sorcerer: Origins. It may not be a masterpiece or a genre-defining game, but it’s clear that it was made by a team deeply passionate about the series.

But even so, Simon the Sorcerer Origins is a great experience if you want to enjoy a wonderful story. There are lots of gags in there, and they don’t shy away from adding some creative gameplay ideas. Sure, there are small frustrations, like stiff animations at times or bad inventory management, but that didn’t push me away from the game. If anything, it’s a solid game that certainly earns its spot as one of the best adventure games in the past few years.

The latest installment in the adventures of the wayward Szymek undoubtedly has a lot of charm. Besides its polished audio and visuals, the title offers tons of naughty humor and two gamepad control options (both of which are effective). If only the plot were more interesting and the whole thing a bit longer, it would be hard to find fault with anything.

Masochistic newcomers and experienced point-and-clickers will undoubtedly enjoy the return of Simon the Sorcerer Origins and Simon's banter, but those without experience will suffer without hints and a multitude of detailed notes.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins looks fantastic, its writing is brilliant and its voice acting (particularly Chris Barrie) is absolutely stellar. It's a great example of a modern point-and-click game — but it's let down by some frustratingly difficult puzzles. It sorely needs a built-in hint system, but hey, at least you can just look up a guide.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or a complete newbie, Simon the Sorcerer Origins has plenty to enjoy and will make you smile aplenty. Brimming with care and love, the game keeps its puzzly sarcastic roots. Whilst also bringing it warmly into the modern adventure game world. It has a number of jarring elements, but they are spaced out and rarely frustrating, giving way to its undeniable vibrancy and charm. Therefore it receives the Thumb Culture Silver Award! Be sure to share it with Swampling, eh Simon?

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is one of those games that sneaks up on you. I went in not knowing much about it, and never having played the originals, but found myself genuinely enjoying the world, the humour, and the art style. The story is quirky in all the right ways, the writing hits that perfect mix of snark and sincerity, and the visuals give it a personality all its own.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is not an exercise in nostalgia, but a conscious act of love toward the genre. Rather than trying to reinvent the lineage it stems from, it aims to recapture the magic of classic point-and-click adventures through modern tools, a delicate balance that Smallthing Studios seems to handle with both respect and personality. Perhaps the world is ready for Simon’s grand return.
