Technical issues can be annoying, but there is still far more good here than bad. For its extraordinary sense of immersion, its vibrant and believable world, and one of the most satisfying progression systems in the genre, I ultimately give Gothic Remake thumbs up, and wholly recommend it.

Gothic 1 Remake is a rare breed that actually respects its source material instead of trying to reinvent itself. It’s not perfect, and it definitely won’t suit everyone, but it delivers exactly what long-time fans wanted — and that’s something a lot of modern remakes fail to do.

Gothic 1 Remake isn’t just a remake of an old game. It’s an attempt to revive a specific type of RPG that’s almost nonexistent today. It’s not merely a return of a famous franchise, but a reminder of a time when RPGs were built on character growth through patience, exploration, tough combat, curiosity, and hardship. A reminder of a time when there was no need to explain every step and when exploring the world was a true adventure. After all these years of waiting, what emerged wasn’t just another remake. It was a modern incarnation of one of the most important RPGs in history. And even though it has a few flaws, it’s a title that shows why Gothic was so exceptional.

Gothic 1 Remake is everything a good remake should strive to be. It stays remarkably faithful to the spirit of the original while delivering meaningful improvements across nearly every aspect of the experience. Even its more drastic changes feel like natural extensions of the Gothic formula rather than unnecessary departures. Can it replace the original? That's a difficult question for me to answer objectively, as I have too much history with Classic. However, if you're new to the series, there is no better place to begin. What ultimately keeps the remake from true greatness are its technical shortcomings and the inherent challenges of balancing a single-player RPG. There are certainly areas where it could be refined further, but even in its current form, Gothic 1 Remake stands as one of the year's strongest releases and a worthy revival of a beloved classic.

Gothic 1 Remake is a game that will kill you, force you to learn why, and then make you grateful for the lesson - and if that sounds like a good time, welcome to the Colony.

Gothic 1 Remake successfully preserves the dark atmosphere, harsh progression, and old-school sense of discovery that made the original so memorable, even if technical issues and occasional clunkiness keep it from feeling fully polished.

The fans are surely delighted by this remake, but does it succeed in pleasing other people as well?

Gothic 1 Remake really blossoms and shines once players get through the excruciatingly slow start, with the seemingly endless back-and-forth conversations and tasks. Whilst I do appreciate how heavily this game focuses on NPC interaction, and its importance in forming alliances, Gothic fails to make me care about any of these Old Camp Shadow thugs, Brotherhood of the Sleeper cultists, or New Camp Mercenaries. Diego is the only character that even comes close to being likeable. Gothic 1 Remake’s biggest achievement is to truly deliver that vintage gameplay experience to players. If you’re a big fan of old-school game design, minimal guidance, and unforgiving difficulty, then this game is for you. For players who have grown accustomed to modern quality of life features like fast travel and auto-saves, Gothic 1 Remake can feel rather frustrating. One of my personal pet peeves was the trainer-based progression system. I had to track down one of the many NPCs who can train me to level up a certain skill. Yes, I know I sound like I didn’t enjoy the game. On the contrary, it brought me back to my childhood, when games didn’t have guides, floating arrows pointing where you had to go next, or glowing objects that stood out so you knew which ones you could interact with. If you’re looking for that old-school feel, Gothic 1 Remake will not disappoint. Gothic 1 Remake gets the Thumb Culture Gold Award!

Gothic 1 Remake is a special title. It bottles all the magic of the original game and has managed to tinker with it enough to keep it authentic but accessible to an entirely new fanbase. It’s still rough as all hell, but this only helps make it captivating. And in a world of gaming where stories are often told through cutscenes, the Gothic Remake makes you tell your own story through its actions, setting, and sense of challenge and immersion. It might be a bit more on the niche side thanks to its rough parts and difficulty, but for you masochists and immersion seekers, Gothic 1 Remake is going to take you right into the Prison Colony, beat you up, steal your ore, and by the Sleeper, you are going to thank it and go back for more!

Gothic 1 Remake brings back a harsh single-player RPG set inside The Colony, where training, camp politics, and dangerous exploration all shape your progress. The game makes you slow down, listen, and learn the world instead of chasing markers. The frame rate cap, pop-in, audio bugs, and clumsy menus kept getting in the way. There’s a good RPG here for fans who miss this kind of challenge, but I’d wait for more fixes before jumping in.

Gothic Remake faithfully preserves what made the original a genre-defining RPG. Its gradual character progression, rewarding role-playing systems, and immersive NPC routines still feel remarkably ahead of their time. Rather than reinventing the formula, the remake strengthens the legacy of a game that remains one of the finest examples of classic RPG design, even by today's standards.

Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful reimagining of the 2001 classic, preserving its core essence while delivering an immersive world that encourages players to explore and forge their own path. This approach may prove frustrating for those expecting a modern RPG experience, but it richly rewards players willing to embrace its harsh, dangerous world with a compelling adventure filled with memorable moments.

A classic RPG remake stemming from a time when RPG were more brutal and let the player explore and discover the world of their own volition. Begin by being literally tossed into the world and have to struggle to survive.

Gothic Remake is primarily designed for fans of the original masterpiece, retaining its ruthless, uncompromising philosophy. While quality-of-life updates make it slightly more accessible, the brutal difficulty remains a steep wall for newcomers. It’s a punishing experience that delivers rare satisfaction. Despite a lack of innovation, it’s an excellent starting point for the franchise's rebirth.

we can say that Gothic 1 Remake is not a game for everyone, and it does absolutely nothing to become one. It is a respectful and rigorous act of love towards a way of understanding role-playing games that many thought were extinct, a work that requires patience, absolute dedication, and the willingness to accept a significantly above-average level of initial disorientation from the player. The historical flaws related to the structural stiffness of the combat system have unfortunately remained in place, partially masked by a modern control system but still evident in tense situations, and the imperfect technical framework found on Xbox Series X prevents the title from reaching the absolute excellence to which it could have aspired with greater polish in the optimization phase. It remains, however, an imposing, dirty adventure, pulsating with a life of its own, and endowed with an unparalleled atmosphere, capable of reminding today's industry that sometimes, to move forward and truly evolve, you have to have the courage to not forget where we came from.

If you like Piranha Bytes titles, you’ll love this, and if this is your first time in the world of Gothic...it could well be a little different to other RPGs you’ve played, but it will absolutely reward your patience if you click with its style.

Gothic 1 Remake entiende perfectamente lo que significa rehacer un clásico. No pretende convertirlo en un juego de rol que siga las tendencias actuales.

Is it worth buying Gothic 1 Remake if you loved the original or are just looking to dive into this world? My answer is: no. Or at least not right now. The remake is a terribly optimized game riddled with all sorts of bugs. In a few months, once the developers have fixed at least some of the issues—and the game itself may have dropped in price a bit—go ahead and head to the stores. Personally, I had a phenomenal time playing it and felt like that little kid in elementary school again, stepping into the Miners’ Valley for the very first time. The remake is great, and I can’t wait to give it another go, this time playing as the other side. I’m also really hoping that the revamped version of the sequel gets the green light. But is the remake better than the original, and is it worth choosing it over the original? To be honest, I see plenty of room for both titles to coexist on the market as equals. That way, you can play the timeless original one time and fire up the modern remake another time. Both games have their pros and cons, which defy the classic framework for evaluating games. And while I know I won’t convince the most die-hard fans, I still recommend that every fan of the series pick up this new version someday. As for newcomers who’d like to explore this universe for the first time? It’s definitely worth checking out the original, but all things considered, the remake—despite its distinctly retro gameplay and hardcore difficulty—seems like a much better starting point today.

The Gothic Remake experience is certainly not for everyone, but those willing to pluck up the courage to get through the first few intense hours of gameplay will find it well worth their while, thanks to entertaining gameplay and a vast, detailed world just waiting to be explored. However, the game inherits some of the original’s flaws, whilst adding others specific to this new remake.
