Scott Pilgrim EX is the latest in a long line of retro revivals from Tribute Games, and like all of its previous works, the developer has done an admirable job of producing a beat ‘em up that builds on its predecessor while adding much appreciated gameplay depth and plenty of replayability.

The just fine writing and exploration that doesn't add as much as I hoped mean that Scott Pilgrim EX isn't quite a genre-defining brawler like the stand-out Shredder's Revenge and Absolum. Instead, it's closer to Cosmic Invasion, a great beat 'em up that does a lot right with plenty of style and love for the source material, especially as an unabashedly biased fan. If this is as much of a sendoff to the series as it feels, then it's a worthy last hurrah.

Despite there being the bones of an excellent brawler in there with some great dialogue, music, and art, it's absolutely let down by bland and tedious mission design that amounts to a ton of backtracking that's left me yearning for a linear, level-based brawler instead.

It's easy to get retro fatigue when every month brings another wave of throwbacks. Scott Pilgrim EX, however, is a reminder of why this genre became so popular in the first place. The spirit and execution come together in a way that feels fresh rather than forced. There's real pick-up-and-play value here, whether you're going solo or just messing around with friends. You don't even need to be a fan of Scott Pilgrim to enjoy it. After all, getting a bunch of friends together to battle the forces of evil with martial arts and giant turnips is about as universal as it gets.

Ultimately, it is the perfect kind of beat ‘em up for a pizza night with friends – and this one even comes with a bit of extra spice to make things even more interesting. The only major downside is that its main story is too short, and I finished it wanting even more

Scott Pilgrim EX is filled with a lot of charm, depth, and ambition. While not every choice is a home run, it’s a blast more often than not, and its multiple endings and secrets will keep you playing for far after you roll credits the first time.

While the boss difficulty spikes can be annoying and some references are often at risk of being too deep, it’s safe to say I’m in lesbians with Scott Pilgrim EX.

With a slew of equippable gear, levels to grind and characters to unlock, the six-to-eight-hour experience with Scott Pilgrim EX left me feeling satisfied without overstaying its welcome through unnecessary grinding or padding. In closing, if you are a fan of the franchise or even just the 2010 game, Scott Pilgrim EX is a must-play.

Then again, beating the crap out of vegans for most of the game is kinda great. If you had your fill with the first game, this one is more of the same. But if you have an itch to see where the series goes, Scott Pilgrim EX can provide seriously good fun, especially if you have friends to enjoy it with.

Scott Pilgrim EX is a remarkable sequel because it respects its predecessor and the franchise as a whole while seamlessly adding numerous elements that makes it a clear step forward. Although it removes some elements from the original that worked well, can become quite repetitive, and we feel it could have done more to encourage replayability, it delivers a well-rounded experience for both solo players and those who enjoy multiplayer.

It might not be filled with replay value after you get through the campaign, but the pieces that make up the moment-to-moment gameplay can lead to a lot of different types of mayhem and challenge. This is an astonishingly stylish video game that sounds incredible, looks beautiful, and plays wonderfully. It's worth fighting your way through evil exes to play.

Whether playing solo or co-op, Scott Pilgrim EX is a positive addition to the beat'em up genre. The title shines with its diverse characters, pixel art graphics, excellent soundtrack, and gameplay which, despite being simple, is functional and fun to master. A must-have game for fans of the series and the genre, but also a great entry point for beginners.

Scott Pilgrim EX is a strong follow-up to the nearly 16-year-old original beat-em-up that builds on most of its ideas. Though the format is a bit less enjoyable than a more straightforward game in this genre would be, the amount of passion for the source material and the satisfying feel of combat should be more than enough to make this a worthwhile buy for fans of Scott Pilgrim, beat-em-ups, or an especially solid purchase for fans of both.

Scott Pilgrim EX is a great game built for a very specific crowd. Its deliberate arcade-style beat ’em up design limits broad appeal, but fans of the genre, art style, or IP will find little to complain about. It’s cheesy, wacky, unapologetically retro, and simply EXceptional.

Scott Pilgrim EX is exactly the sort of brilliant surprise fans of the franchise deserve. The open-world format makes exploration a treat, the combat feels better than ever, whilst the wonderful retro visuals and audio ensure the game both looks and sounds brilliant. And sure, it might have a few small issues – mostly with the tedious backtracking and those rather unforgiving checkpoints – but those gripes fade away the second you get stuck into the thick of things with your friends. It’s really, really fun. It’s a lovingly nostalgic punch-up that respects its roots while offering something genuinely fresh… what else could Scott Pilgrim fans ask for?
