Super Meat Boy 3D is a pleasant surprise. Translating this famously brutal platformer into 3D could have gone badly, but the developers have done an impressive job keeping the tight controls and addictive gameplay intact. It’s still brutally difficult, still packed with hazards, and still built around repeated failure. That means it won’t be for everyone. But if you enjoy precision platformers and don’t mind dying dozens of times while learning a level, there’s a lot of fun to be found here. For the right audience, Meat Boy’s leap into 3D is a surprisingly successful one.

Super Meat Boy 3D is a wonderful take on the 2010 classic, with that same “one more try" hook that makes it impossible to put down.

Although not a perfect sequel to the original Super Meat Boy, its 3D version is a good enough evolution, and even with some missteps, it delivers a fun, challenging, and quite stressful (in a positive way) game.

Super Meat Boy 3D is much more than just a 3D retelling of a beloved title; it’s an exercise of mastery of platforming design, made in the image of a cube. Though far from accessible (despite its best efforts) and still somewhat similar to its predecessor, the inclusion of Dark World Levels and the design space opened by an entire new dimension of space gives it a platform to stand on. Best you load up on controllers, because Meat Boy’s back on the menu.

Super Meat Boy comes as advertised. A challenging 3D Platformer that you may want to throw your controller at a wall at times, but comes with a satisfying feeling in the end. To say it's not satisfying to complete levels or even boss fights is a crazy statement.

While the addition of the extra dimension brings a few niggles to the precision platforming that simply weren’t there in the original, overall Super Meat Boy 3D retains a lot of what made the original game great – with snappy restarts, generally tight controls, tricky challenges and a lot of reason to go back and beat personal records or find hidden secrets.

Does Super Meat Boy 3D reinvent the world of 3D platformers? No. But it doesn’t need to do that to be a solid adaptation of a beloved franchise into the third dimension. Super Meat Boy 3D is a great game to play in between other things when you feel like challenging yourself. As a somewhat mid-skilled gamer, did I sometimes get a little frustrated? Yes. Did I still have fun? Absolutely. So Super Meat Boy works very well in 3D, as the team at Sluggerfly has proven with this title. But I’ll probably leave completing the game to other players.

Super Meat Boy 3D is brutal yet addictive and genuinely fun platformer. However, I can’t help but think it would be even better if its spatial perception issues and somewhat shaky controls could be refined into better shape. It’s enjoyable as it is, but with the difficulty level soaring through the clouds, it would admittedly be nice if not quite so many attempts didn’t end in death due to slightly clunky gameplay. Be that as it may, the action is enjoyable, quirky and anarchic, and that alone earns it a lot of forgiveness in my eyes.

Super Meat Boy 3D may lose a bit of its distinct look in the move to 3D, but the many tense and thrilling levels and the breadth of well-designed content make it a mostly worthy trip into the third dimension. I hope Meat Boy keeps getting weird and distinct new games going forward, as the little skinned fellow seems to have a lot of life left in him.

Super Meat Boy 3D on PS5 is a good follow-up. It keeps the franchise's history alive while making the core gameplay work in 3D in a way that feels natural and fun. It's worth getting if you liked the first one or challenging platformers in general. The game is punishingly fun, with fair progression and a playful look that makes failing over and over again funny instead of frustrating. It's a fun game with optional Dark World levels, character unlocks, and the excitement of mastering stage after stage. I highly recommend it.

Super Meat Boy 3D successfully translates the series’ signature precision platforming into a new dimension, delivering slick controls, inventive level design, and strong replay value through its Light and Dark World structure. While it does not quite reach the brutal highs of the original, its accessible difficulty curve and satisfying movement make it an engaging evolution that still captures the core spirit of the franchise.

Maintains all the charm and playability of the original games, but the move to 3D brings a whole new challenge. The levels are well designed, and the mechanics are simple but devastatingly painful to pull off. It is a very difficult game, so be warned, and it is very reflex-based. I had a lot of stressful fun, and it’s the type of game I come back to here and there when I feel like feeling like a failure. If you want a 3D platformer that rewards precision and punishes mistakes instantly, this is it.

Taking a beloved, precision-heavy 2D classic and transforming it into a 3D experience was a bit of a gamble, but damn, Super Meat Boy 3D pulls it off with some seriously satisfying style. It easily lives up to the original’s legendary status – it’s packed with a staggering amount of content, fluid movement that perfectly captures the action of the original game, and, perhaps most importantly, it’s just as satisfyingly challenging as before. Whether you’re a long-time Super Meat Boy fan chasing milliseconds on a speedrun or a glutton for punishment facing the grinder for the first time, Super Meat Boy 3D is a bloody brilliant platformer that you absolutely need to play.

Super Meat Boy 3D is precisely what it says it is: the gameplay of Super Meat Boy, in 3D. Sounds great to us.

Super Meat Boy 3D is a return to form for the cube of meat brought to life. The levels are exactly what you’d expect: challenging platforming sequences that demand your maximum effort as a gamer. The gameplay is smooth, and Meat Boy himself is a joy to control, with the addition of a dash being particularly notable, while the wall run feels somewhat underwhelming. The transition to 3D works well, supported by a vibrant visual style and strong level design, despite a lack of musical variety. If you enjoy demanding platformers, Super Meat Boy 3D might be the perfect torture device.

Super Meat Boy 3D marks a triumphant return for the little, battered meat-and-bone man. It’s a game that’s just as brutal as we expected – in some cases even too much so, due to a few shortcomings in the level design and perspective. Despite this, it’s a spectacular game: get ready to break a few controllers, because your patience will be put to the test right from the very first levels.

If you can get used to the controls, this is a reasonably competent platformer. However, I do recommend everyone play the demo first so you can judge for yourself.

What's commendable about this 3D iteration of Super Meat Boy is just how similar it feels to the 2D original. It's addictive, visually appealing, and the leap to 3D offers new ways to approach levels that the original could never. But, this comes with some drawbacks like cheap deaths, less precise movement, and levels that feel far less challenging overall. That said, this is still easily the best SMB game outside the original, and well worth checking out for newcomers and SMB veterans alike.

Make no mistake, Super Meat Boy 3D is as pure a punishing speedrunning platformer as you'll get, just like it's predecessors. It's fast, tight, infuriating, hilarious, bloody and just outright white-knuckle fun. But yeah, f**k this game right off as well.

Super Meat Boy 3D is a bold and largely successful evolution of a beloved formula. It takes the core elements that made the original so compelling — tight controls, punishing difficulty, and clever level design — and translates them into 3D with great confidence. Its greatest strength lies in its identity. It’s not for everyone, and that’s also its selling point.
