Pokémon Champions proves that the tried-and-true combat system that helped define Nintendo’s monster-catching monolith has endured for a reason, but it’s going to need a lot of updates and maybe even an evolution of its own before this is the definitive way to do battle.

Right now, Pokemon Champions provides two different experiences for seasoned players and newcomers respectively--and unfortunately for newcomers, it's an uneven one that will require a lot of their own dedication and time to improve.

With that all said, the core mechanics of online competitive Pokémon battles remain as solid as a Steelix. Predicting whether your opponent will switch out their Whimsicott, protect with their Mega Charizard Y, or try to catch you off guard with a powerful, offensive attack creates mind games as addictive and intense as ever. And as someone who has participated in competitive Pokémon on-and-off since 2011's Pokémon Black & White, the ease with which I can now train Pokémon has me hopeful that Champions will, much like Scarlet & Violet before it, evolve into a more complete, comprehensive experience. But as it stands, the convoluted monetisation, disappointing performance, and inexplicable bugs make this another lacklustre Pokémon experience to add to the pile.

Pokémon Champions feels like a work in progress, in a bad way. While the battles are fine and the QoL improvements are a godsend, there's a distinct feeling that the product is unfinished and lacks vital content that will be rationed over time. Throw in the bugs, and the result is a game that I might want to check out in six months or a year, but doesn't have enough quality content to attract me now.

Pokemon Champions is a competent option for those that only care about Pokemon battles, but it doesn't offer much else.

Pokémon Champions is, all things considered, exactly what you'd expect - give or take a few too many rough edges. In fact, looking at the game's monetization and other titles in the Pokémon ecosystem, you could almost say we got off easy. At least, for now.

Billed as a battle-first game, Pokémon Champions has a lot of potential.

Pokémon Champions, at launch, is a solid start to the new Pokémon battling experience on Nintendo Switch. Robust, flexible mechanics for newcomers to enter the battle scene and customisation for more seasoned players. As a free-to-play game, there is a surprising amount on offer - full battle modes and rental Pokémon, with paid content primarily reserved for cosmetics/time savers and storage. Pokémon Champions isn't without its choppy performance in areas and missing content, but it is a strong start that's bound to... evolve over time.

Pokémon Champions arrives with the great proposal of turning Pokémon’s competitive scene into a separate, free-to-play experience. While it does an excellent job of making this game mode more accessible than ever, limited content, technical issues, and bugs compromise its launch.

Pokémon Champions is surprisingly accessible without spending any money if you’re a casual VGC enthusiast. Launching with a few bugs and less content than fans of the series expected, it’s clear that we’ll have to wait for future updates to know where the series is heading in this purely online competitive Pokémon game. The fact that you can play the game without importing from Home by recruiting and tweaking stats on the fly makes this game a very competitive hub for the series. We hope future monetisation plans will not eventually wring out casual players from the game’s population. A tailored selection of Pokémon and items for this first season has both casual and competitive fans creating a brand-new meta for competitive play, and while it falls short in some areas, the game has the potential to become the ultimate generation-spanning battle arena for everyone.

Pokémon Champions delivers well on its proposal by establishing itself as the “home” of PvP battles, offering an accessible, straightforward environment fully focused on competitive play. With simplified training, quick adjustments, and back-to-back matches, the game removes barriers and centers entirely on the player-versus-player experience, without relying on a campaign or narrative. It is not pay-to-win at the moment, but it still lacks technical polish and visual improvements, as well as support for Portuguese. Overall, it’s a solid step in the right direction with great potential, though it depends on continued support from the developer.

Pokemon Champions is a disappointing, battle-focused spin-off that lacks the depth, story, and visual flair needed to justify its existence over the mainline games. Marred by a limited roster and uncharacteristic pay-to-win mechanics, it fails to recapture the magic of Pokémon Stadium for both casual and competitive players.

Pokemon Champions succeeds in doing something the series has struggled with for years: making competitive Pokemon accessible without stripping away its depth. Between the streamlined systems, balanced design choices, and strong progression, it creates an experience that feels welcoming to newcomers while still challenging veterans to adapt. While issues like the Replica Team system and lack of a replay feature hold it back slightly, the overall package is incredibly strong. After 30 hours of play and plenty of time in ranked battles, it’s clear this is a game built to last and one that I’ll continue playing well beyond this review.

Pokémon Champions is a very solid game, taking the first step towards a new direction in which the official competition format has everything it needs to become even more popular. The title lowers the entry barrier, even if not as much as would be ideal. It fulfills its objective most of the time and has considerable potential to expand upon this solid foundation that has already been built.

Pokemon Champions feels like a title that suddenly had to launch due to chasing a specific quarterly report. While otherwise nearly perfect as a platform, lacking a multitude of very important items on release makes the game feel fundamentally incomplete. The paywalled quality-of-life additions are also a major deterrent, especially for those who expected a way to engage with VGC without owning the mainline games. It's still a wonderful attempt at making competitive Pokemon more accessible, though, and is definitely something that'll only improve in time.

Pokémon Champions is more than mixed. Of course, as a fan of the Pokémon universe, it’s nice to be able to get into Pokémon fights competitively, as was the case with Pokémon TCG Pocket on mobile. The studio has made the title accessible through its tutorial and a Motisma that indicates the strengths and weaknesses to each ability you launch. Similarly, we will not spit on the immersion in Arena mode and the 1001 strategies that it is able to implement according to the Pokémon that will make up your team. But a free game, you have to finance it and the Pokémon Company (and Nintendo) has used the strong way by offering premium content in chaos, by conditioning the composition of your team to obtain tickets on a daily basis. In short, a game that wants to enter the competitive scene in the greatest way, leaving aside a part of the audience of which I will be a part.
