If this is your first time playing any version of Star Fox 64, this is an absolute non-optional Switch 2 purchase. Returning fans will have a great time, but be warned: this is fun but familiar territory.
Star Fox’s combination of tried-and-true N64 mission design, stunning new visuals, and technical polish results in a game that feels both nostalgic and surprisingly fresh, exciting, and fun here in 2026. Yes, perhaps more fully original content could have been added to the package, but this new Star Fox did a surprisingly adept job of barrel rolling past my concerns and should satisfy veteran and newcomer wingmen alike.
Despite its flaws, it’s the best entry in the entire 23-year history of Star Fox.
Velan Studios has turned Star Fox 64 into a graphical stunner, bringing it up to code with a more photoreal art design, and top-to-bottom script rewrite for cutscenes and mid-mission banter. For the most part, these are all improvements, making Fox’s mission more meaningful, and his crew feel more, well, human.
For fans of the franchise, Star Fox on the Switch 2 feels like a long-awaited reunion with an old friend. The game still has the same qualities that made you vibe with it back in your younger days. At the same time, it feels more grown up and mature. It still has its share of faults and areas where it could do better. Then again, all of us have something that we could work on and be better with. For newer players, it’s also a rare opportunity to experience a beloved classic remade for modern times. If the idea of an old-school shooter wrapped in a space opera intrigues you, give Star Fox on the Switch 2 a shot. Or a barrel roll.

Star Fox is a remake that fully preserves the essence of Lylat Wars whilst modernising not only its graphics but also its gameplay mechanics. However, it's been a long time since the heyday of the Nintendo 64. So, whilst the characters' charm and the Arwing controls still hold their own, this reimagining lacks the boldness needed to overcome the limitations of the rail shooter genre today. At 50 euros, it's still a good opportunity to rediscover a major exclusive from the Kyoto-based company's history, but it will take more than this to truly put the franchise back on track.

Star Fox is the front-loaded summer tentpole of gaming. You'll play it, replay it, and be thoroughly entertained doing so. It's rarely ever the same game twice. After a while, those of us who are nostalgic may rightly feel we've played this before. The refinements are greatly appreciated, but the time for them has passed-"Mission Accomplished." Nintendo needs to create something new, with even more options and polish, to break the franchise out of its later cycle of inconsistency and stagnation and let it soar to the heights this entry achieves. Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2 might be the catalyst for the series' return to form, sure to attract new fans while retaining old ones. Falco may grow bored in victory, but you won't. There's never a dull moment.
Star Fox is without a doubt the best version of Star Fox 64. Long time fans are sure to love its smart inclusions from both a narrative and gameplay perspective, while newcomers will get to experience one of Nintendo's most important games on hardware that truly brings it to life. It's another massive win for the Switch 2, and I hope it paves the way for a new Star Fox title some day in the future.
Putting thoughts and feelings on remakes aside, Star Fox is a good game in its own right with a lot of replay value and a great entry point to the series.
Despite my pre-release trepidation, the new Star Fox lived up to my expectations. It's a competent reboot of a cult classic from years past.

Even so, if you loved Star Fox 64 or have never played a Star Fox game before, this remake is an easy recommendation.
Star Fox on Switch 2 may not be the brand-new reinvention some wanted, but it is easily the most polished and complete version of this classic formula.
Star Fox maintains everything that was good about its N64 inspiration and enhances it with stellar visuals, an incredible soundtrack and masterful presentation.
Star Fox is a Switch 2 remake that understands exactly what made the Nintendo 64 original the defining game in the series. It remains faithful to the strength of its original design in a way only Nintendo could pull off.
Star Fox fulfills its most basic purpose by bringing this Nintendo 64 classic back to players in a more modern form. There is no denying that many of its design choices were groundbreaking in their time, but this remake is nonetheless somewhat disappointing. It simply pairs visuals roughly on par with the previous console generation with gameplay and level design carried over from 30 years ago almost entirely unchanged.

Star Fox puts a new coat of paint over a classic, and it's a grand return to form for the series.
Star Fox is exactly the comeback I was hoping to have in my hands. Nintendo didn't try to turn the series into something it was never meant to be. Instead, it chose to celebrate its identity, enriching it with modern production values, a more ambitious narrative, and top-tier audiovisual presentation.
