Culdcept Begins acts as a great entry point to the mysterious series, distilling its core mechanics in a way that feels approachable without watering down what makes the gameplay so special. Though it can be a little simplistic in its presentation, the variety of boards and deckbuilding potential means that there's tons of replayability and depth to dive into here, whether playing solo or multiplayer. If you're at all a fan of board games or card games and want to try a quirky project that neatly applies to both, I'd highly suggest you add this one to your library.

Culdcept BEGINS is an excellent deckbuilder/board-game hybrid that cured me of my deckbuilder fatigue.

This newest installment is an approachable, beginner-friendly take on the classic formula, enhanced by deep tactical gameplay and an exceptional new aesthetic. If it weren't for an underachieving single-player campaign, it would be a complete success.

With a fanbase as niche as Culdcept‘s, Begins‘ lack of a target audience is its biggest misstep, and one that leaves it aimless despite being designed as a crowd-pleasing renaissance.

The story mode is a phenomenal tutorial, while the online play offers a most beautiful TCG and digital board game experience thanks to Culdcept Begins taking the best of both Monopoly and Magic: The Gathering. However, it stumbles at the finish line of becoming a strong competitor to Mario Party as the quintessential digital board game night title. For households with four Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 systems this is a must-buy. Otherwise, one really has to consider if playing board games with strangers online and the tutorial-esque story mode are appealing in themselves.

Blissfully microtransaction-free (it would have been very easy to make Culdcept very expensive), Culdcept Begins is everything a good digital board game should be.

It's a surprisingly user-friendly version of a complex game that does a great job of teaching you the basics and occasionally kicking you in the face with its random-number reliance. The single-player content is a great tutorial with a little extra, but the breadth of this game is in the customizable card decks and the potential long legs of multiplayer, be it locally or online. This is likely the most approachable Culdcept has been in English-speaking countries ever, and thankfully it's an enjoyable, somewhat-streamlined version of it.

Culdcept BEGINS is a meow-velous strategy game blending deep deck-building with tactical board game mechanics for an addictive experience. While lengthy battles and unpredictable dice rolls can affect the flow of matches, its rewarding gameplay, high replay value, and fantastic fantasy soundtrack make it a great entry point for newcomers to the series.

I've been waiting a long time for a new entry in the Culdcept series, and Culdcept Begins doesn't disappoint. The local and online multiplayer features, along with GameShare, were exactly what I hoped would be included, and I'm thrilled they made it into the game. While I wasn't expecting a story, it grew on me over time. That said, I wish multiplayer and other features weren't locked behind the first few story chapters. Overall, though, Culdcept Begins is the best game in the series. If you're a fan of Monopoly and Magic: The Gathering, Culdcept Begins is an easy recommendation.

Culdcept BEGINS is a bold fusion of Monopoly-style territory control and collectible card strategy, elevated by great art and music, but occasionally undermined by heavy reliance on luck and a campaign.

Culdcept Begins is an excellent way to dive into the universe of the digital board game franchise initiated on the Sega Saturn. The game's logic is very fun, giving players a lot of strategic options while also putting a healthy dose of luck in the matches.

Culdcept Begins is a competent, if slightly dated, strategy experience; it serves as a functional return for the franchise, though one that occasionally relies too heavily on the simplicity of its past.

'Culdcept Begins' is a title that has undergone a transformation equivalent to a renewal compared to its predecessor. Of course, there are some somewhat difficult parts in the deck-building section, but I think it still captures the essence well enough to fully live up to the subtitle 'Begins'.

Culdcept BEGINS feels like a wonderful reintroduction to a series that’s been quietly building a dedicated following for years. Its combination of board game mechanics, card battles, territory control and deck building creates something that still feels unique today. It has plenty of strategic depth without making newcomers feel unwelcome, thanks to its gradual learning curve and thoughtful tutorials. Yes, luck can occasionally swing matches through unfortunate dice rolls, and the story isn’t quite as engaging as the gameplay itself. But neither of those issues stopped me from enjoying what Culdcept does best. If you enjoy thoughtful strategy games, deck builders or board games where every decision matters, there’s an awful lot to love here. It’s clever, rewarding, wonderfully different, and after finally experiencing the series for myself, I can absolutely see why Culdcept has maintained such a loyal fanbase for all these years.
