Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a must-play because Capcom has managed to recapture its essence and adapt it to the modern era. The combat system is undoubtedly its greatest strength, delivering some spectacular moments. Add to that a fantastic setting, memorable boss battles, and top-notch audiovisuals. Not everything is on the same level, but it proves that the franchise has an excellent foundation for the series’ future.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a fantastic return for a franchise many thought Capcom had left behind. Even when I thought combat had hit its peak, the game kept layering on deeper mechanics, richer upgrades, and thrilling boss encounters that demand your absolute best. In a stacked month of massive releases, Musashi’s journey isn't just worth your time—it's an absolute must-play for action fans.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an action-packed welcome back that’ll give fans both new and old something to be excited about. It’s a game that respects the past with its familiarity while also inserting its own flavor to make it stand on its own against other single player narrative games while even paying homage to action games that more or less could’ve replaced it.

Capcom has modernised the formula without sanding off its personality, combining deliberate swordplay, grotesque demons, and a rather rollicking adventure marked with dark twists and turns. The end result is a bloody, stylish and surprisingly amusing-in-spots slasher that understands the appeal of cutting through Genma demons with increasing degrees of supernatural bullshit. It’s not trying to be Warlords again. It’s forging its own blade. And after nearly two decades of waiting, I’m more than happy to be storing it up on my katanakake with the older ones.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a solid foundation in certain aspects, particularly with its protagonist, Musashi. In addition to the combat system and several distinctive ideas in its boss encounters. However, the game did not utilize these elements well due to a lack of enemy variety, an overly easy difficulty curve, lackluster level and quest design, and shallow exploration. These shortcomings held the experience far below its true potential, ultimately rendering the game a wasted opportunity on all fronts.

Rebooting a classic franchise is never an easy task, but Onimusha: Way of the Sword pulls it off with precision, delivering a fun, action-packed samurai adventure that will appeal to both veterans and newcomers to Capcom’s saga. The fact that even its occasional difficulty spikes don't prevent a recommendation proves it is well worth wielding the Oni Gauntlet and putting an end to the demonic hordes as Miyamoto Musashi. And, fortunately for us, the Switch 2 is a great platform for doing just that.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword confirms Capcom’s success in masterfully reviving the franchise, pleasing both new and returning fans with its humorous plot, agile combat, and expansive exploration. Although it has its shortcomings—such as excessively tough bosses, limited enemy variety, and minor exploration flaws—these issues do not diminish the brilliance of this excellent title.

Way of the Sword borrows just enough from that genre to feel current without losing its own identity, making it approachable even for players who normally avoid Soulslikes.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword successfully modernises the series without losing its identity, pairing precise combat and satisfying Issen mechanics with strong historical fantasy storytelling. The semi-linear structure and mundane side activities occasionally disappoint, but polished presentation and rewarding mastery make this a confident revival.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a game that has surprised us immensely. It manages to adapt the franchise to modern standards without losing its identity or its dark fantasy atmosphere. The depth of its combat system, the spectacular nature of its boss fights, and the meticulous work on the animation and Japanese folklore more than compensate for minor aspects such as the repetitiveness of some side quests. Despite this, Onimusha: Way of the Sword—unexpectedly—is easily one of the best games we've played in 2026.

Onimusha - Way of the Sword delivers great Action and boss battles, but stumbles over itself. The modernising, soulless way of the open world has dulled this warrior's blade.

Capcom is on a roll and continues to be so with a great revival of Onimusha. Way of the Sword feels great to play, the action is slick and tense, while the story is fun but a bit campy as well.

In the end, the return of Onimusha through this release proves Capcom's serious effort to revive one of its most venerable franchises in a style that blends the spirit of the past with modern-day challenges, smartly drawing inspiration from combat mechanics in games like Sekiro. While the game shone by delivering intense and challenging boss battles, alongside a stable technical performance that serves fast-paced movement, it faced a few clear obstacles. The weak AI of regular enemies and the dullness of the linear design for main missions negatively impacted the adventure's pacing, in addition to a drab visual tone that dimmed the luster of the game's world. Nevertheless, the experience remains an enjoyable and worthwhile stop for fans of the series and samurai game enthusiasts, provided you overlook a few missteps in balance and overall difficulty level.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword shines with fantastic gameplay, which, thanks to its abundance of parries and defensive mechanics, can even rival Sekiro. The mix of dark, grotesque themes and a slightly naive sense of humor has been successfully wrapped in a modern presentation and, together with the compelling story and wide variety of boss fights, makes for a highly enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, the sheer number of bosses, along with the somewhat average NPCs, starts to wear thin fairly quickly. Combined with the uneven difficulty curve, this is the game's biggest weakness. However, if you can live with these shortcomings, you're getting one of the best action RPGs of recent years.

The biggest takeaway is the game’s riveting, intense, and masterful combat design, which ultimately defines the game and, to summarize what Takamura says to Musashi regarding part of his reasons for fighting: “it’s just damn fun.”
