Onimusha: Way of the Sword shines with fantastic gameplay, which, thanks to its abundance of parries and defensive mechanics, can even rival Sekiro. The mix of dark, grotesque themes and a slightly naive sense of humor has been successfully wrapped in a modern presentation and, together with the compelling story and wide variety of boss fights, makes for a highly enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, the sheer number of bosses, along with the somewhat average NPCs, starts to wear thin fairly quickly. Combined with the uneven difficulty curve, this is the game's biggest weakness. However, if you can live with these shortcomings, you're getting one of the best action RPGs of recent years.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is some damn good fun, providing an action packed adventure I thoroughly enjoyed. Musashi's journey may obviously detour from his real life exploits, but the bond of strength he has with Ganryu makes for a compelling rivalry that sets this game apart from its peers. From compelling combat to a fantastic cast of characters and bosses, Way of the Sword was well worth the wait, and I can’t help but want more.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a fantastic revival the series has needed for a while. Its satisfying combat is the obvious highlight, with Issen, parries, deflects, and Oni abilities giving you plenty of ways to approach enemies and show off, while the excellent latter bosses constantly push you to master the core kit. Musashi is also a surprisingly likable protagonist, and I was genuinely impressed by how invested I became in the story and its side characters. The game does take a bit too long to properly challenge you, and its exploration is a bit unambitious, but these are relatively minor complaints. With fantastic animation work, a rewarding combat system, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly engaging story, Way of the Sword feels like exactly the kind of comeback Onimusha deserved.
