Halo: Campaign Evolved is a well-crafted return to a classic, successfully modernizing the original campaign with improved visuals, smooth shooting, vehicles, and co-op gameplay. New missions, level selection, and modifiers add replay value, but some repetitive sections and the unchanged level design reveal the game's age. The lack of classic multiplayer is also a noticeable omission. Overall, it is a solid modernization aimed mainly at new players and longtime fans, while offering a promising first look at Halo's next-generation future.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a great opportunity to introduce impactful characters and stories to new enthusiasts and platforms, as well as deliver a fully updated experience for long-time fans. While in its best visual and technological version, and still bringing new features, the re-release suffers from dated and unimproved level design, as well as the missed opportunity for an online multiplayer experience that the title never had the chance to offer before.

All the elements that made Bungie's original Halo: Combat Evolved so incredible return, enhanced and improved by Halo Studios in Halo: Campaign Evolved. The Master Chief returns in his first adventure with improved controls, stunning visuals, new voice lines dubbed and localized into Spanish, and a better-told story. Halo looks better than ever in a remake that enhances the gameplay and lets you customize the experience down to the last detail. The ability to play solo or in online and local co-op with up to three friends rounds out a title that pays a fitting tribute to the classic and is better in every way.

A smart remake that modernizes a classic without losing its identity. Despite a few inherited flaws, Halo: Campaign Evolved remains one of the most enjoyable and engaging FPS games in recent years.

Halo: Campaign Evolved introduces smart changes that enhance the experience, making the gameplay and exploration more enjoyable than ever. However, the three newly added stages clearly highlight the weaknesses of Halo Studios' writing team.

While it’s not a perfect remake thanks to a few niggles (and a distinct lack of PvP), there’s no denying that Halo: Campaign Evolved takes what was so beloved about the original and improves on it in many ways. It looks incredible, the quality of life improvements and reworked levels are welcome, and whether you’re back after 25 years or brand new, this is still a standout FPS that needs to be played.

Halo: Campaign Evolved faithfully rebuilds one of gaming's most influential shooters, combining stunning visual upgrades, refined gameplay improvements, and expanded cooperative features without sacrificing the identity that made the original an all-time classic.

All the conveniences of 2026 seem to “water down” the original experience, whether it has to do with the hit markers or the continuous waypoint that destroys the sense of exploration. The visuals are a feast for the eyes, and this is undoubtedly the best-looking Halo we’ve ever seen.

In many ways, I still think it’s a shame that we had to go all the way back to the beginning to get a truly excellent Halo game, but Halo: Campaign Evolved does give me hope for the future of this franchise.

The first entry in the Halo franchise, 'Combat Evolved,' is back as an Unreal Engine 5 remake. Although it features significant visual upgrades and various improvements to the combat experience compared to the original, it ultimately falls a bit short due to its underwhelming prequel missions and a lack of attention to minor details.

Halo Campaign Evolved comes highly recommended because the studio has managed to update one of the most important games in history without compromising its essence. It achieves this through a series of improvements that make the experience more enjoyable and varied, thanks to a completely revamped audiovisual presentation and subtle tweaks. It’s true that some decisions, such as the absence of competitive multiplayer, may seem strange. But for both veterans and new players discovering the series for the first time, this is undoubtedly the best way to experience the beginning of the legend.

Halo: Campaign Evolved looks and sounds like a true current-gen title, but baffingly retains the tedious level design that even longtime fans of the original found tiresome. A bolder approach would have softened this disappointment.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is the modern version of Combat Evolved we all have been waiting for. Put the issues aside, it's a great remake that enhances the experience while not changing what made Halo so great to begin with.

For anyone with Game Pass it may be worth the data to download and play with friends, but to anyone else (including PlayStation faithfuls who have been denied one of gaming’s greats for too long) it’s hard to recommend when the original is packaged with its sequels for notably less.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a beautifully modernised version of an iconic adventure. The stunning graphics and smooth gameplay ensure that entertainment and challenge go hand in hand perfectly. A clever story, plenty of variety in enemies and environments, plus a brilliant soundtrack and audio, made my first encounter with Halo a glorious one. It’s only the many tighter, linear sections and the backtracking that make you realise this gem is already a quarter of a century old. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, this FPS guarantees hours of uncompromising shooting fun.

If you’ve never experienced Halo before, this remake is a great place to start. However, as a longtime fan of the series, I don’t feel it lived up to the expectations we have for a Halo game.

The first installment of the Halo series is considered the jewel made by Xbox and the primary reason for Xbox's success. What this legendary entry truly deserved was a remake worthy of the game's historical status, and to fulfill this entitlement, Halo Campaign Evolved was released. It preserved the spirit of the original game while bringing improvements to the narrative style, environment design, vehicle handling, along with high quality in gameplay and graphics, the addition of usable weapons, and extra missions to pave the way for the game's story. However, the game was flawed by some issues such as repetitive level design in indoor areas, technical issues, and problems in cinematic cutscenes.
