Halo: Campaign Evolved is a solid but safe remake of the timeless classic shooter. Fans of the original should probably not expect too much out of this revisit, but longtime PlayStation fans can now experience one of the most influential FPS campaigns of all time on Sony's platform.

Halo Studios has proved that you can still teach an old dog new tricks with Halo Campaign Evolved. It faithfully expands the story, all while staying true to what made it special in the first place. But the lack of competitive multiplayer and Firefight makes the game feel a bit empty once you’ve completed the story.
HALO: Campaign Evolved is an impressive visual and emotional trip down memory lane, successfully capturing the spirit of the original in Unreal Engine 5. Unfortunately, the lack of multiplayer, underwhelming new missions, and technical issues make it feel more like a polished tribute to the past than a truly complete modern experience.

Halo: Campaign Evolved speaks to the series' timelessness and adds a decent set of new missions, but it's a mostly a lean retread that's more of a test run for its future with Unreal Engine.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a novel trip around a familiar ring, but its biggest changes point to an unremarkable future for Halo.
While there’s a handful of shortcomings, Master Chief's opening chapter has never looked or felt this good, and with any luck, marks the beginning of a new journey where ambitious narratives and evolutionary gameplay mechanics won't be left behind.
These issues aside, however, Halo: Campaign Evolved is awesome. And that’s not surprising, simply because Halo: Combat Evolved is a fantastic game.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a serviceable remake of the Xbox classic, even if it wasn't really called for. Not settling for a simple coat of paint, this game takes all the best parts of other Halo games and blends them with revamped graphics to reshape Combat Evolved into a game modern audiences will enjoy. Halo: Campaign Evolved brings back one of the coolest FPS experiences of all time, and it looks better than ever. Unfortunately, some PS5-specific headaches and bad performance issues are currently holding it back in major ways.
Nostalgia is the name of the game here, and Halo: Campaign Evolved toes a fine line between preserving a beloved classic and updating it. Whether it's the floaty feeling of driving a Warthog or hearing that familiar buzz when Master Chief's shields recharge, Campaign Evolved captures that feeling of playing the original Halo brilliantly, as if reliving a memory from childhood. For those who never experienced Halo on the original Xbox or its other remakes and remasters, it likely won't have that same magic appeal, especially if you're comparing this doled up relic to more elaborate, modern first person shooters.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is, above all, a celebration of a game that marked a turning point in the genre, but it's also an experience in its own right that can stand shoulder to shoulder with today's titans of the shooter.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is surface-level impressive. The visuals are gorgeous, even if they muddy readability and necessitate a cluttered HUD, and the mission changes are actually interesting. Halo Studios has made bold moves here, some of them pay off, others don’t.
Halo: Campaign Evolved succeeds because it understands what needed to evolve and what needed to stay untouched. The new additions help modernise the experience, but the heart of Halo remains exactly where it should be. Playing through Master Chief's first mission on PS5 is a significant moment, but the reason it works is much simpler. Halo is still a brilliant shooter, and experiencing it with a friend reminded me why we need more games willing to deliver this kind of focused, memorable campaign.
This time it comes with a few bells and whistles.
The final verdict is disappointing. Halo Studios is not only incapable of making a quality brand-new game, but they can't even handle a remake of a timeless classic. Yes, Combat Evolved may seem somewhat dated in places today, but it still generates unforgettable battles. Halo: Campaign Evolved brought positive changes to the original campaign, but much of it also turned out to be either superfluous or downright ridiculous. What's especially frustrating is the deterioration of combat dynamics combined with the dumbing down of the AI. And the absence of multiplayer simply can't be ignored.
