Like the duo's previous games, Well Dweller is a polished take on the genre that understands what makes Metroidvanias enjoyable without overcomplicating the formula. Fans of the genre should find plenty to like, and the Thompson brothers have once again delivered a strong entry in their growing catalog.
Not every metroidvania has to be frustratingly difficult; we need games like Well Dweller that manage to appeal to everyone. It tells a great story through equally great presentation, with a cast of incredibly lovable characters, while making excellent use of metroidvania mechanics.

My impression is that Kyle Thompson created something designed to appeal to all kinds of audiences, and that is a huge plus. Overall, if I had to use one word to describe Well Dweller, I’d say it is—by far—really “fun.” Give it a play!

As a dark fairy-tale Metroidvania, Well Dweller hits the mark with its atmosphere and storytelling, blending healthy doses of horror with the cozy style characteristic of its developer, Kyle Thompson. The gameplay plays it safe, retaining the efficient, fun design seen in the creator's previous titles without trying to fix what isn’t broken — though I do wish the level design offered more of a challenge.

Well Dweller was one of those surprises that won me over within the first few minutes. The game has a simple premise, yet it manages to turn exploration, puzzles, combat, and a dark fantasy story into an adventure that is extremely enjoyable to follow. Spark may only wield a single matchstick as his main weapon, but that doesn’t stop combat from being fun. The abilities also make exploration evolve in interesting ways, while the bosses stand out thanks to their creative design and battles that truly make you eager to see what comes next.

Well Dweller boasts well-executed and precise gameplay, with just the right amount of challenge, cool collectibles to find, great characters, and simply spectacular visuals. I believe the combat could be a bit more varied, and healing less laborious, but these end up being minor things in the grand scheme of things.

Well Dweller's combat is fun, yet simple, with a wide array of enemies and excellent boss fights. The real charm lies in its world design and story, though. An oppressive sense of dread is contrasted by wonderfully designed, humorous, and adorable characters and stories that give a real sense of life to this fantasy world.
