Well Dweller won't win you over if you're waiting for a Metroidvania that reinvents the genre. Instead, it takes familiar ideas and makes them fit together so well you barely notice the seams. Combat becomes instinctive, enemies keep you paying attention, fast travel cuts the dead time, and new abilities get put to use almost immediately.

Well Dweller is probably one of the best Metroidvanias I’ve ever played. The story is fantastic, and the art leans heavily into the Grimm-like fairytale. The game encourages players to explore the entire map, hiding collectible objects, trinkets, and trinket points to level up Glimmer, the protagonist in the game. Glimmer sets out to save their family, a reluctant hero who is forced into their fate. Everything feels so good in the game: the combat, the boss battles pushing players to react rather than memorize patterns. It’s everything I love about this genre.

Well Dweller delivers a polished Metroidvania with clever traversal, a charming dark-fairy-tale world, satisfying combat, and flexible trinket builds. It may not reinvent the genre, but its confident execution makes the journey well worth taking.

Well Dwellers ' artistic direction is some of my favourite I've seen in the Metroidvania genre, with a blend of medieval aesthetic and childhood vibes that hit perfectly in crafting its lovely, twisted world. Quick yet simple gameplay with tangible progression and rewarding exploration made me check every nook and cranny of this wonderful dark fairy tale.

Well Dweller is a great entry point into the genre for newcomers, while also offering a polished experience for veterans, who will probably want to play on the higher difficulty settings. While it doesn’t break any new ground, this humorous dark fairy tale is likely to be enjoyable for just about everyone.

Well Dweller is a compact, well-polished Metroidvania that stands out thanks to precise controls, excellent art direction, and consistently smooth progression. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre and features a fairly simple combat system, but it makes up for it with its pace, atmosphere, and effective level design.

Well Dweller is simply wonderful, with its gorgeously grim world, satisfying platforming and combat, and accessible approach making it a real treat for Metroidvania fans. Some might argue that it doesn’t have the depth seen in similar titles in the genre, but if I’m being honest, I think that’s one of its strengths - especially since it absolutely nails all of the basics. It’s just a ton of fun to play, and in a genre that’s stacked with new releases, this is one that deserves your attention.

Well Dweller is honestly a beautiful game and I highly recommend playing it for its amazing story and not too stressful of a time when fighting. My only gripe with the game is with the shop and trying to bulk buy trinket spaces. Other than that, the game made me smile, laugh, angry and sad my entire experience. I doubt Kyle would read this, but thank you again for making another great game. In a time where a good chunk of us are alone and family is far from us, the game helps us remember that family is worth fighting for. And if your child likes plucking bird feathers out of pure psychotic joy…TO THE BRIG THEY GO!I also like harvesting food, plants and eggs to use to eat or make more. Plus, finding different vendors who sell skills, books and other great items while exploring made me want to search for more stuff. I give Well Dweller the Thumb Culture Platinum Award

Well Dweller has its own identity, built in a charming fairy-tale premise, a cast of characters that you start to care about, and a tone that manages to find a balance between real darkness and humour, never allowing things to get too heavy.

My impression is that Kyle Thompson created something designed to appeal to all kinds of audiences, and that is a huge plus. Overall, if I had to use one word to describe Well Dweller, I’d say it is—by far—really “fun.” Give it a play!

As a dark fairy-tale Metroidvania, Well Dweller hits the mark with its atmosphere and storytelling, blending healthy doses of horror with the cozy style characteristic of its developer, Kyle Thompson. The gameplay plays it safe, retaining the efficient, fun design seen in the creator's previous titles without trying to fix what isn’t broken — though I do wish the level design offered more of a challenge.

Well Dweller was one of those surprises that won me over within the first few minutes. The game has a simple premise, yet it manages to turn exploration, puzzles, combat, and a dark fantasy story into an adventure that is extremely enjoyable to follow. Spark may only wield a single matchstick as his main weapon, but that doesn’t stop combat from being fun. The abilities also make exploration evolve in interesting ways, while the bosses stand out thanks to their creative design and battles that truly make you eager to see what comes next.

Well Dweller may not be as creative in terms of gameplay as Kyle Thompson’s previous games, but it’s still a charming, stylish, and very skillfully crafted Metroidvania that strikes a strong balance between grim fairy tales, endearing forest creatures, and wonderful exploration.

Well Dweller is a joy to play from start to finish. From its beautiful and varied landscapes, sinister bosses, ambient music, and excellent gameplay mechanics, to its beautiful worlds and character designs, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. A Metroidvania that could, and should, be held up as an example of what games from the genre should be.

Well Dweller is yet another competent and compelling Metroidvania from the Thompson brothers. Blending cute-as-a-button and harrowing themes to offer up a intricate Metroidvania map that is a joy to explore. It lacks that aggressively punishing difficulty some fans have come to expect from the genre, but that aside, this is a wonderful experience that really spreads its wings
