Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is a solid racing game when on the track, but the limitations on local co-op play and the frequency of immersion-breaking load screens hold back what could’ve been a great open-world racer.

The excellent foundations of the Hot Wheels Unleashed games have been carried over into a very fun open world racer experience, one that manages to shine during its chill exploration moments and in the midst of high-octane races on plastic tracks suspended above the cities you can explore.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush succeeds in capturing the nostalgia of toy cars within an open-world setting that feels like a massive theme park. While four-player split-screen and the track creator manage to save the overall package, a total lack of sense of speed, overly simplistic controls, and underutilized technical capabilities dull the final result. A charming pick for couch co-op session, but far from Milestone's finest work.

HOT WHEELS Infinite Rush was a pleasant surprise. I went in without being very familiar with the previous games in the franchise and found an arcade game that truly understands the fantasy of playing with these toy cars.

If you're looking for a fun, respectable driving adventure with the family, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is a pretty fun time well worth the effort.

Having an open world sounds like a stroke of genius for a Hot Wheels game, and while I admit that there’s loads to see and do in Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, I don’t think its progression system, car collection, or editor mode are quite as enjoyable as what the Hot Wheels Unleashed games had to offer. Those games worked well because they embraced the fact that you were controlling a tiny miniature in the real world, making otherwise mundane environments feel absolutely enormous. By comparison, the open islands in Infinite Rush are packed with content and certainly cute to look at, but they lack that sense of novelty and scale.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush builds on what came before with interesting open-world locations, awesome cars, and core gameplay that still feels tight and fast.

Hot Wheels™ Infinite Rush takes the popular car toys in a new direction with an open-world playground. Filled with vehicles to unlock, plenty of ways to customize your rides, and improvements throughout, it feels like a refreshing change for the series. While the number of islands is limiting and some missions feel repetitive, there’s plenty here to keep drivers clawing back.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is still a bit like many other Milestone games: the overall experience feels slightly clinical and risk-free. This time it doesn’t bother me quite as much however, as the open world structure is fun to mess around in and the difficulty is finally well-balanced. There is more than enough to do and collect to keep everyone busy, and thanks to its four-player local multiplayer, it even poses a serious challenge to Mario Kart in parties.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is a flavorless open world with repetitive events and an uninspired, atmosphere-less world to explore. While the racing, online, and track editors all remain, there isn’t much here that feels creative and exciting, and the experience just feels hollow as a result.

HOT WHEELS Infinite Rush is a competent, well-crafted racer for all ages that tries to pivot the franchise in a new direction, but its ambitious open-world is wide as an ocean and shallow as a puddle compared to its contemporaries. I far prefer the focused, menu-driven progression of earlier titles. By stretching itself thin to copy today’s open-world trends, Infinite Rush loses the spark of its predecessors by delivering an experience that offers surprisingly finite enjoyment.
