Tales of Eternia is a game originally released for the PlayStation 1, and you can see where it’s starting to show its age, with some issues regarding movement and the difficulty balance in certain sections. That said, it’s a game with a simple story that’s carried very well by captivating characters and combat that, despite its minor issues, is a lot of fun. It’s one of my favorite Tales of games, and I was really happy to be able to revisit it.

Tales of Eternia Remastered successfully revives a classic title that previously faced various distribution and language-related challenges. Furthermore, quality-of-life improvements—such as a random encounter toggle, map markers, and the full inclusion of voiced dialogue sequences—provide a perfect reason for those already familiar with the original game to revisit it. Combined with the additional bonus content, this makes it an essential title for fans of retro games.

While the game offers a highly enjoyable story and cast of characters, it’s still a game from 2001, meaning it can be rough around the edges for those more versed in recent Tales releases.

I loved taking a trip down memory lane with a game I hadn't played in 20 years, but I don't know if today's players will look at it through the same rose-tinted glasses as I do.

From destroying a legendary piece of animation to scattershotting sprite filtering to no useful end, this is a fumble that makes my heart hurt. The restored skits are nice, but that’s like pouring a glass of water on a fire.

Absolutely, fans of the franchise must play Tales of Eternia, especially if they never got a chance to. This remaster includes some great quality of life improvements that help blend the old with the new without tarnishing the original vision. The game's age still comes through in many aspects, but the new additions help pave the way for a new audience to experience a long-sought franchise entry in the Tales of franchise.

The combat system will appeal to action JRPG fans, as well as fans of 2D fighting games. But the adventuring, dialogue, and pacing are full of JRPG bad habits that modern players have grown tired of.

Tales of Eternia Remastered from developer TOSE is a fun game with a strong narrative that still maintains its RPG roots. The gameplay lacks its once-innovative variety and still feels like an early-2000s title at its core. Still, this old title has some good charm.

Tales of Eternia Remastered is the best remaster Bandai Namco has released for this franchise to date. Inferia is a vibrant and captivating world, the game's characters are memorable and lovable, and the ALM battle system still proves entertaining and engaging. Alongside these elements, numerous quality-of-life improvements for better customization, coupled with completely fresh English voice acting, have turned this classic into a highly accessible experience for old fans and new audiences alike.

Tales of Eternia Remastered is yet another fantastic remastering effort within the Tales of series. By bringing one of the franchise’s most significant titles to modern platforms, Eternia serves as a prime example of what made the Tales of series so beloved by JRPG fans. Although its age brings with it a few minor issues, the game’s unique charm offers a taste of an era when the genre was at its peak—proving to be a breath of fresh air in a modern landscape often filled with repetitive experiences that are increasingly limited in scope.
