We can’t remember the last time a game disappointed us so much. Petroglyph are a gifted RTS developer filled with industry veterans, and their last title Grey Goo was superb. 8-Bit Armies though is not.

Add in a terrific soundtrack by Command & Conquer composer Frank Klepacki, and that’s 8-Bit Armies – it’s a small, tightly-designed RTS geared toward genre newcomers that doesn’t offer much in the way of gimmicky flash or weird new asymmetric factions, but counters with an easy-to-use design with just enough moving pieces to make it a great first step for players who are RTS-curious but intimidated by the likes of StarCraft 2 or Total War.

8-Bit Armies tries to evoke a sense of nostalgia, but forgets what made classic real time strategy games so fun to play.

After the interesting Grey Goo, Petroglyph delivers an old-school strategy game with a retro look. Don't expect the complexity of the masterpieces you played in the 90's, though: 8-Bit Armies has a poor strategic value and all the matches looks the same.

Honestly, I'm thoroughly surprised at this little gem of a game. While the difficulty can ramp up quickly and without warning, it's a great challenge that goes with the game's excellent replay value. For fans of old Command & Conquer, this should be high on your list, especially with the added co-op missions. With future updates coming as well, expect the game to have a long shelf life, even for being a smaller indie title.

Petroglyph, the modern maestros of RTS, have created a fun, accessible new entry that is a great way to get into the genre. There isn’t a lot of complexity here but the friendly art style and generous difficulty curve make 8-Bit Armies the perfect RTS for beginners.

Overall, 8-Bit Armies is a game that deserves your attention, and it will be getting a lot of attention from my son and me in future days and weeks. For the low price you can't go wrong, and with how easy it is to learn you can have hours of fun by yourself or with some friends.

With its nostalgic graphics and a classic soundtrack to boot, 8-Bit Armies feels just like the RTS's of old, but adds nothing new to the formula.

8-Bit Armies may look like a goofy spoof of real-time strategy games yet it's an impressively in-depth and enjoyable game that both genre newcomers and veterans will appreciate.

This game is more backwater base quartermaster than frontline fighter, but I guess the saying rings true; ‘War is hell.’

8-bit Armies is an easily accessible, visually appealing RTS game with a top quality soundtrack. If you’re an old-school Command & Conquer fan that’s looking for something to scratch that itch on the PlayStation 4, this is undoubtedly the best option in that regard. It’s fun, as tactically deep as you want it to be with a enough content to keep you busy for a few weeks. Unfortunately, while most of the game play staples have translated well from classic C&C to this, the control options are still lacking, begging for a mouse and keyboard with the Dualshock 4 acting as a poor translator. It’s also lacking some charisma, feeling almost sterile at times, falling an FMV or 2 away from greatness.

8-Bit Armies is a reminder of how far the RTS genre has come and although it's fun to begin with but the ease with which you'll breeze through the levels makes it hard to recommend to anyone other than someone new to the genre.

At its core, 8-Bit Armies is a an imitator. A competent one, a throwback, with a few clever tricks of its own, but nothing wholly original or revolutionary. If you're itching for another strategy game it will satisfy well enough, but it doesn't feel essential.

8 Bit Armies is a charming cartoon-like RTS game that offers a good challenge. It can be unfair at times due to the enemy having advanced tech, larger forces, and even nukes. Planning and strategizing is necessary, and fills you with pride when successful. Unfortunately it seems as if the multiplayer lobbies are empty.

8-Bit Armies developed by Petroglyph and published by Soedesco is a fast paced real-time strategy game that has a strong similarity to the Command & Conquer franchise and is depicted in a voxel manner, i.e the graphics are made up of blocky pixels.

8-Bit Armies might not be the saviour of the RTS genre, but it is a neat and simpler alternative for the consoles.
