Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is by far the weakest entry of the series. Everything from the roster to the mechanics to even the graphics are a huge step back, making it an easy pass for all but the most diehard fighting game fan.

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite tried so hard to be Marvel vs Capcom 2, one of the best entries into the franchise, but ends up falling short in terms of roster, character depth and gameplay. A lot of interference by Marvel's overlord: The Mouse; leading to a lot of fan favorites and X-Men characters being left out of the line up. The story, for what it is, isn't anything near the depth and interest that other games like Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 have done this year. Capcom was once the innovator and leading name in fighting games. While the Fighting Game Community might get some mileage out of the title, the casual player has already moved onto the game that does the Marvel vs Capcom formula right: Dragon Ball FighterZ

The Capcom game's flippant approach to its pedigree is evident right from the beginning of its Story Mode.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is one of the most disappointing fighting games in a long time.

Overall I can’t help but feel disappointed in this game. It may never live up to the legend status of MvC3. Its definitely making waves and people are enjoying the game competitively but the ugly characters, shitty story, lack of any longevity and downright awful roster won’t keep my attention for long. I don’t even find joy in saying, “WHEN’S MAHVEL?” because now it’ll bring back memories of this game.

For some hardcore fans and for some casual players, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will do the job. The online and training modes are there for the former, whilst the arcade and accessible gameplay is there for the latter, but it doesn't make an effort to go all out and do all it can for both sets of players. Add to this the inexcusable locking out of characters as DLC, the weak overall roster, and rubbish presentation, and it is clear Capcom didn't want to put the effort into what could have been a great revival for the series. No doubt Infinite will still have appeal when it comes to the esports scene, but in the face of stiff competition, this one is likely to fall by the wayside before too long.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has perfectly competent core gameplay, with some welcome touches to make things more accessible to newcomers, but is let down by everything around that gameplay loop. Character designs, voice acting, writing, and just about everything about the story mode are all well below what one of the year's biggest fighting games should be offering, and that's enough to ruin even the simple joy of watching Thor pick a fight with Ryu.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is a serviceable, albeit disappointing fighting game release. Solid enough gameplay mechanics and flair dampened by a terrible main story mode, unappealing character designs and a lack of general polish.

After spending a fair bit of time with the many fighting games that have released this year, it’s fair to say Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite is both slacking and lacking in comparison.

While the gameplay and netcode are absolutely fantastic, the visuals, UI, and roster are painfully lacking.

Poor visuals, a weak roster and an awkward story mean that the best parts of this game don't come through at first. The foundation is there, but unfortunately Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite falls short of what it needs to be great.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is an decent fighting game, but at the same time it has a number of major flaws. You can definitely find better games on the market.

Capcom's latest fails to impress when compared to the past. The improvements in accessibility and reliable gameplay don't redeem its bargain bin presentation, lacking roster, and forgettable campaign.

Ultimately, we'll have to see how Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite develops as far as expanding its character roster with its (forthcoming) DLC, and how the hardcore community takes to the game after spending more time with it and learning its deeper mechanics. While it may not quite match the blend of style and substance that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 provided in the last generation, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite still provides an enjoyable romp with Earth's (and video gaming's) mightiest heroes, warts and all.

Fighting game players who are into the genre for the sake of going toe-to-toe with other players will have far more to look forward to than those who are attracted to game's overall presentation or alternative game modes. So in the midst of quite a few missteps and mediocrity, you can't deny that at its very base Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite did at least offer some solid improvements to gameplay while still keeping the overall pace and feel of the franchise.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite is a descent fighting game, but not nearly as good as the previous ones; mainly because a less good character design and a greedily implement of dlc content.
