Yes, it’s not your typical Metal Gear and yes, its microtransactions do more harm than good. But still, Metal Gear Survive is an interesting spin-off that manages to build tension via exploration and provides with decent base building mechanics to keep you occupied for hours.

Metal Gear Survive tries to straddle the line between the action and survival genres and succeeds at neither. Die-hard Metal Gear fans may find something to like here, but most potential players are better off avoiding its many frustrations.

Metal Gear Survive is an intense survival experience that takes the exceptional gameplay of MGSV to set itself apart with a very entertaining game. However, this happens when it doesn't look like a MOD from the original and abusive micropayments don't interest you.

Metal Gear Survive is both a bad survival game and a bad Metal Gear game.

An uncanny addition to the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Survive survives as a survival game but doesn't deliver as a Metal Gear game.

With a confusing and frustrating jumping-off point, it may be hard to break into Metal Gear Survive. Those that manage to stick around, however, should expect to find something worth surviving for.

It’s a strange choice for the continuation of the series, but against all odds, it turned out great.

For all the fervent hatred of Konami that forms the current gaming-hate-bandwagon of choice, based on its own merits, Metal Gear Survive isn't a terrible game. It's not a great one for sure, and certainly not near the pedigree we expect from a Metal Gear product, but it's a serviceable enough survival game that benefits greatly from layering in a few of The Phantom Pain's systems. It won't scratch that same itch of sneaky badassery that has made Snake a household name, and it's almost certainly not worth the full $40 / £35 asking price, but there's definitely fun to be had here even if it doesn't come close to troubling the series' heights.

Most of you have probably already made up your mind about Metal Gear Survive. I think Survive has some redeeming qualities and, had it focused firmly on its multiplayer, I may have enjoyed the experience more. As it stands, there are just so many better titles in the survival genre, it's hard to recommend this game to anybody. I'm sad to say that Metal Gear Survive has squeezed any ounce of hope I had for this series I only recently got into.

Baffling AI behaviour, dull environments and a stupid story mean that even as a standalone survival game, Metal Gear Survive fails on too many levels. There are far better games that deserve your money. For example, if you want a complete survival experience, then ARK: Survival Evolve or 7 days to Die are better options on the PS4.

Metal Gear Survive is not for everyone. This is better approached as an open-world survival-horror game where building weapons from scratch, clawing at animals for food while drinking dirty water found in the world defines what it takes to survive. Including the Metal Gear name increases the external pressures around this game, as it is different to what fans of the franchise may expect. Aside from the aggravating always-online infrastructure of the game, Metal Gear Survive is a pretty good outing for those looking for a reason to battle zombies in an extremely vulnerable state. While the story is pretty meh, it is the exploration factor and sense of discovery and accomplishment, as well as feeding those hunger and thirst meters that showcase the fun and enjoyment of this experience.

No, it is not a good Metal Gear game. Yes it is somewhat difficult to love thanks to a laborious and shonky opening act. Yet Metal Gear Survive is a good survival game underneath the grime of its controversial existence. Whether people will give it the chance to show that is a whole other issue.

It feels like Konami were always planning to release a zombie survival game, and used Kojima’s departure to slap the Metal Gear logo and assets on it to save time. If this is the case, then the decision does neither the game nor the Metal Gear franchise any favours. Metal Gear Survive is not a great Metal Gear game, but could have been a good original game by itself.

Metal Gear Survive is a good survival game that pays the fact of being the first Metal Gear game after Hideo Kojima departure from Konami. With a different name, this brand new spin-off in the Metal Gear saga would have received less ferocious criticism and being appreciated for its good gameplay and ideas, despite the lack of a good story and cut-scenes.

Konami killed another series. Even without comparison to main Metal Gear games, Survive is a boring and uninspiring experience overall.

Though it's not totally devoid of positives, Metal Gear Survive suffers the curse of being wholly unremarkable in pretty much every way. Bland survival gameplay, unoriginal ideas and unresponsive melee combat make for a tedious experience. Metal Gear Survive is certainly a functional game, but someone forgot to add the "fun".

There's a weird, enjoyable story in Metal Gear Survive for players who make it past the game's grueling opening hours, and there are flashes of a great survival game. But with a threadbare connection to the 30-year history of Metal Gear and a comparatively shallow game made in the shadow of The Phantom Pain, it's hard to recommend enduring the whole thing.
