This is just a terrible entry in the long-running series and deserves to be completely forgotten. Boring, riddled with bugs, and lazily made, it makes me miss the older games.

For long-time fans of the franchise, Dynasty Warriors 9 feels like it has its heart in the right place, but the implementation of the open world and MMO mechanics feels dated, creating a bland experience that does not do the colorful series justice.

Although it attempts to take a massive step forward, Dynasty Warriors 9 ultimately fails to deliver an open world worth exploring. Thankfully, smacking around waves of enemies is as delightful as ever.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a perfect example of why you should be careful what you wish for.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a game that can be recommended only to hardcore fans of the genre: the formula is absolutely the same, with its inherent boredom, further stressed by a subpar open-world experience. There are some new elements here and there, but the gameplay is basically the same.

Dynasty Warriors 9 suffers from a lot of issues, most stemming from the terribly implemented open-world. Assets are reused, it's buggy, repetitive, bloated, empty and bland. These shortcomings are made all the more painful by the obvious potential this game had, and how fun the base combat can be once players waded through all the other nonsense.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is definitely a new start for the series and a big change to what we are used to playing in a Musou game. The new open world design completely changed how I approached the game, and I was thrilled to be done with the old menu system. Unfortunately, the graphics haven't changed much other than some visual improvements here and there. At the end of the day though I need to ask myself if I have had fun with the release, and the answer is a big yes. There are still things they can improve for the next entry in this long-running and beloved series, so here's hoping Dynasty Warriors 10 knocks it out of the park.

Dynasty Warriors finally gets the overhaul it's long been waiting for… and while it addresses a few old problems it creates just as many new ones.

Conceptually interesting fusion of open world and Musou, which due to poor performance and numerous bugs misses the mark.

We'd rather Omega Force just stuck to what they're great at: making excellent hack and slash games. And Dynasty Warriors 9 isn't one of those.

Admittedly, many of the flaws or problems I have with Dynasty Warriors 9 are nothing entirely new to the series. It's just that now there's a whole new layer of problems that have been put on top of them that make the original issues that much more apparent. For almost every aspect of the game's features that I felt were on par with the quality of past titles, there is a contradiction.

Battles were raging and allies were calling for help, but for once the game offered me the option of deserting the fray and contemplating the larger world around it. It's a shame that everything else in the game works so emphatically against it.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is extremely repetitive, and it gets to the point of frustration and boredom. The graphics in game are nothing to talk about. It would be different if the game had subpar gameplay and beautiful scenery, but you won't find that here. Unchallenging combat is just salt in the wound. This is not a game I recommend, and its 80 something playable characters cannot save it.

Dynasty Warriors 9 couldn't even keep the decent quality the series is known for, in fact it is a huge step back for the series. The open world did more harm than good for the game, and the fact that there is no other mode other than the story mode just made the lifetime of the game shorter. Perhaps the improved combat system and the way the game tells the story will makes it playable for some of the hardcore fans, but the bad AI and the many bugs the game has just makes hard and challenging to finish the game.

The musou genre needed new ideas - but reinventing it as a shoddy open-world game wasn't the answer.

This is the first time Dynasty Warriors has made it to an open world, but unfortunately it has also resulted in a product that is bloated and feels dated in term of the open world design. It is a good step forward for the series but it needs a lot more tweaks in order to remain relevant for any potential future entries.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a very ambitious title. It tried to take a game, which has been operating as a series of mini-missions and make it into a true open-world experience. Do I feel it was successful? Yes and no. The game has all of the aspects of an open-world game, it's just a shame it also inherited all the flaws of one as well. However, the combat and gameplay mechanics I love from the franchise are here and everything has been expanded on to make it the biggest Dynasty Warriors game to date.

Sure, the hack 'n slash mechanics have been improved and remains the main pull of this new sequel. But it's simply not enough to convince non-fans to take Dynasty Warriors more seriously. The diehards will flock to it, of course. But they may even be disappointed with its lackluster quality as well.

This is a juncture where each player must decide for themselves: Even if overall a decent video game, is this a decent Dynasty Warriors game? Such is the risk of renewal; change that seems necessary to some is not even desired by others. The fans of yesterday won’t always be the fans of tomorrow.
