I want to love Wizard of Legend. It's a fun, fastpaced beat-em-up with lots of replay value, gorgeous pixel art, and an incredibly deep combat system. But the frame skipping I encountered made playing it an exercise in frustration. If the issue is ever sorted out, I'll give it a more enthusiastic recommendation. For now, I just wish it played more smoothly.

"Magical action game doesn't quite deserve the legendary status."

Despite its shortcomings, Wizard of Legend is still wonderfully put together. For a project from a two-person indie dev team, it's definitely worthy of praise. It's all the the things I absolutely love about Magicka 2 blended together with the replay value and challenge I adore about The Binding of Isaac.

At the end of the day, Wizard of Legend is a totally fine arcade-style dungeon crawling roguelite. It's not near the top of the genre, or even near the top of the genre's Switch representation, but with the fun two-player experience, it's a respectable addition. If you'd rather sling spells then shoot guns, dance among the dead, or jump around, Wizard of Legend is a good game to pick up.

Wizard of Legend is a fast paced dungeon crawler with rogue-like elements and a good combat system based on the combination of over 100 magic spells. Too bad for the procedurally generated dungeons, that show how to be less creative and more lazy.

Wizard of Legend has some novel concepts. Being able to swap and mix spells to create a seemingly unlimited amount of combinations keeps the action fresh and encourages you to experiment on each run. What's also likable about this game is how polished the entire package appears to be. It's these aspects that make it more favourable than the average offerings that frequently pop up on the Switch. If you are looking for yet another dungeon crawler with rogue-like elements, Wizard of Legend is a step above the competition.

Wizard of Legend is an enjoyable roguelike dungeon crawler with fun, fast-paced combat, beautifully crafted music, and pleasant pixel visuals that come together to form a fantastic fictional setting. Although the difficulty is steep and there is the occasional balancing issue, the available co-op modes are an excellent addition that help negate those problems.

Though there are some glaring flaws in the gameplay systems, it's still a fun title, and the enjoyable visuals and music help make it worth your time.

If Wizard of Legend's awesome gameplay was set in a massive adventure-filled world then it would be one of the best indies ever made.

Overall, Wizard of Legend is a solid purchase and we recommend it heartily. It’s fun, fast, and challenging all while having a wonderful soundtrack and (even if not unique) fantastic art style sure to please anyone looking for a retro-inspired game with fantastically tight controls.

Easy to access, difficult to master, if the difficulty curve is not a deterrent, the persistent will find some fun to be had with Wizard of Legend.

Wizard of Legend offers an extremely enjoyable battle system and many customization options, all presented with great pixel art and enjoyable sound design. While the lack of variety in environments and enemies is a big downside, Wizard of Legend plays like a charm and makes you want to come back for more.

Wizard of Legend has a certain charm that many roguelike fans will fall for. With 144 relics to find, and almost as many arcana, the staggering number of potential combat combinations is impressive. The procedurally-generated levels mean no two playthroughs are the same, however, options for replaying a particularly cool layout are slim. Some people may not like the difficulty level, but then again roguelikes are often tough for a reason, to keep players coming back to prove themselves. It may be a bit repetitive in spots, but for those looking to challenge themselves, Wizard of Legend is the latest roguelike to pick up, and for only $15.99 to boot ($14.39 for PS Plus members).

Wizard of Legend is a good one-player game, but an ever better game for two players. It has outstanding replay value because of the procedurally generated dungeons and combat system, and two amazing two-player modes. I recommend playing this game with a friend.

Even with as many roguelikes as I’ve played Wizard of Legend is a bit of a surprise, but that cuts both ways. On the one hand, if you take the time to collect a sizable number of spells the sheer variety of what’s in the game guarantees that at some point you’ll likely find a combination that suits your style and even personal sense of flair. One the other, given the random nature of what you’re offered, with bad luck it could take quite a while until you find that mix and you’ll be feeling like you’re never quite clicking while in combat. It’s interesting because while mid-run you’ll sometimes have an opportunity to change out or add to your spells, unlike most roguelikes you can really play with your base configuration to try to suit it to your style of play. If you’re up for a pretty substantial challenge, Wizard of Legend provides that in spades and given that its feel is absolutely unique that helps to blunt the fact that it can also be frustrating as you try to put together your ideal build.

Wizard of Legend is one of those rare titles where it's easy to come back to it at any time. The game, for having so few bosses and levels, never begins to feel dull or repetitive. There's tons of variety in equipment and spell loadouts, and the dungeon changes enough each time that it never really starts to feel stale. It would be nice if there was a little more variety in the stages offered, but there are enough unique combinations that each adventure is always fresh and exciting.

Wizard of Legend may not be your all-time favorite roguelike dungeon crawler, but it's very good at what it does. The fast-paced, action-oriented angle is exciting, and the addition of co-op makes the game as fun as solo runs. The item system suffers from a lack of descriptions until it's too late, but the many combinations you can conjure up give the game some replayability. Both genre fans and newbies will like Wizard of Legend.
