Since its debut, Battlefield V has been facing an uphill battle due to its poor marketing campaign. However, Battlefield V successfully captures the essence of what's this franchise such a monumental hit with fans and critics. The single-player is unexciting and serves as a passable tutorial for the multiplayer but like past entries in this franchise, Battlefield V is about large-scale multiplayer combat. And that's where Battlefield V's best moments exist, on the large maps against dozens of players in destructive warfare.

A strong if slim shooter that lays down strong foundations for the future, while feeling a little unfinished.

Battlefield V has the potential to be the best game in the series. It’s recaptured the magic of those Battlefield moments at almost every opportunity, and its new mechanics like squad revives and attrition put the focus back on sticking with your teammates. There are still a lot of questions it needs to answer with its Tides of War live service, and more casual players might be turned off by the challenging gunplay, but what we have now is a worthy successor to the Battlefield name.

Battlefield 5 has nailed the sort of gameplay that drew us into the series in the first place.

The most visually stunning FPS game on the market right now with a thoroughly engaging multiplayer. Sadly, it still remains incomplete.

Fans of the Battlefield franchise will find that despite its flaws, Battlefield V warrants a return trip to World War II. If we look at raw numbers, there's less content than before, but the quality of the maps remains the same, and free DLC is on the way. Some old modes, like Frontlines, feel like a slog, while new modes like Grand Operations feel quite quick despite having longer intended play times. The game looks gorgeous, but it still has some graphical issues that need to be ironed out. Despite all of this and a number of bugs that are already being addressed by DICE, BF5 still manages to retain all of the traits and quirks that make the Battlefield series feel exhilarating.

Battlefield V changes the way historical FPS games are told, as it puts the human psyche ahead of glory, fame, and frags, or at least it does so until you join a multiplayer match.

Battlefield V offers a compelling single-player and multiplayer package, although it's not the complete reinvention that you may have hoped for.

There's no doubt that Battlefield series is still going strong, and this V is probably the best game of the franchise.

Battlefield's traditional strengths remain firmly in place amid DICE's return to World War II: great graphics, audio, and a scope that few other games can equal. But it's a thinner package than usual, and the decision to hold important modes like Firestorm until 2019 feels like a crucial misstep. Battlefield 5 is a good shooter as it is, but we wouldn't blame you if you decided to wait until it's had some time to mature.

Battlefield V‘s failure to communicate, whether the emotional disconnect of each War Story or the difficulty of organizing your fellow soldiers in a Grand Operation, is the crippling problem that holds the game back from greatness.

What I can say with confidence, though, is that Battlefield fans now have two great current-gen shooters, one set in each of the World Wars to choose from. If you skipped Battlefield 1, or don't mind paying to jump to what will now be the actively supported game in the series for the next few years, Battlefield V is definitely worth picking up at some point.

Battlefield V is a good, if safe game that feels more iterative than innovative. Its legacy will likely be defined by how steady and interesting the stream of new content is moving forward

Battlefield V hits the right notes of war being a bloody affair, with gritty hard fought battles. The maps present real contrast from one another, with each favoring different styles of play. Playing as part of a decent squad can see you noticeably affect the outcome of a battle, and one that is full of period weaponry that still pack a punch. Grand Operations is considered by DICE and EA as this installments crowning multiplayer achievement and as the game is currently missing the new standard of a Battle Royale mode this is the case. At the moment in time, the game has a few niggles bug wise but still presents a strong experience – one that will hopefully improve with a couple of minor patches and the promised future content.

Battlefield V is going to be a great game, of that we're sure, but due to a number of glaring omissions at launch and one too many glitches, the final product isn't there just yet. Series veterans are sure to feel at home with what's on offer now, though, thanks to a solid multiplayer offering that sticks to the tried and true nature of what makes Battlefield tick.

Battlefield V is in its current state not recommendable and a big step back for the series. The Singleplayer and Multiplayer deliver less and less content and feel more and more unfinished. The Gunplay is a lot better than in Battlefield 1 and even the short War Stories deliver some great new insights for the series and into WW2 but we can't recommend getting this game in it's current state. The content at the moment will dissapoint newcomers and long-time fans of the series.

Those that make the plunge and purchase Battlefield V will still have plenty to be excited about. There will be a little something for everyone, which will only get better with time and countless updates. Plus, if you're looking for an excuse to make your PS4 GPU scream, look no further. Who knew that the horrors of war could ultimately end up being so goddamn beautiful?
