GREAT - Super Mega Baseball 3 retains the wonderful gameplay from the prior game and the bottom line is that it’s just plain fun to play. The addition of franchise mode is sure to excite some gamers and this is a great iteration of the franchise to begin with. However, if you already own Super Mega Baseball 2, the price of admission may be too steep for this sequel.

Super Mega Baseball 3 is an improvement over the previous game in pretty much every area. It looks fantastic and manages to appeal to both newcomers and seasoned pros alike. Customisation is at the heart of the game. From the difficulty all the way to the creation suite Metalhead Software give you the agency to play how you want. The result is a game that all sports fans, not just baseball enthusiasts, should check out.

Super Mega Baseball 3 is easily one of the most satisfying modern baseball games available. It’s not as flashy as bigger titles like The Show, but it more than makes up for it with fantastic gameplay and a surprising amount of depth. This is a must-play for baseball fans, regardless of how casual or hardcore they are.

When it comes to sports videogames, I’ve never liked the arcade-style ones with over the top gameplay and superhuman displays of strength. At first glance, that is exactly what the Super Mega Baseball franchise delivers, but once you start playing, you’ll see that it’s actually a deep baseball simulator with smooth gameplay and a metric ton of customization options. Super Mega Baseball 3 is better than its predecessors and they were a lot of fun. Despite the silly aesthetics, Super Mega Baseball 3 is not just a good baseball game, it’s my favorite baseball series going right now.

Getting right down to it there’s just something about the Super Mega Baseball series that taps into what love and nostalgia I have for baseball as a sport, particularly in video game form...

Franchise mode helps to extend that depth in creative, unique ways. Overall, Super Mega Baseball 3 is like if those old janky NES baseball games played as good as you wish they did when you were younger, while at the same time, standing respectably next to the greatest sports games of all time. After all, Super Mega Baseball 3 is the greatest baseball video game I have ever played.

Super Mega Baseball 3 feels like the baseball games I used to love from a few generations ago. Liberated of the "depth" of modern sports games, there's an efficiency to the action that is appealing, and the gameplay modes that it does offer are all compelling.

The pitching mechanics have improved, the base-stealing is light-years better than before (it actually takes good timing and skill to execute), and the game's performance is excellent. There were only a couple hiccups I experienced, but that was in online play which could've just been connection related. If you've been looking for a great baseball game to play on the Switch, Super Mega Baseball 3 should be your first choice. They're also offering a free demo that allows you to play the online Pennant Race mode, play the Exhibition games, and access to player customizations. Hope to see you in-game sometime soon!

If you're a Switch owner with a passing interest in baseball, Super Mega Baseball 3 is a must buy. One of the best independent titles to date on the platform – and arguably the best indy sports title, period –  it does everything its predecessors did…only better.

A lot of sports games can take inspiration from some of the good things Super Mega Baseball 3 offers and I hope that Metalhead Software can steal some good ideas for the training and management side of the sport from other games for Super Mega Baseball 4.

Super Mega Baseball 3 is certainly not trying to be a downright authentic virtual baseball experience. It does get the job done at providing a more lighthearted approach to the beloved sport, allowing certain things that wouldn't hit home in a real game (see how long this next pun took to get here?).

What it lacks in hyperrealism and officially-licensed teams, Super Mega Baseball 3 more than makes up for with a carefully adjusted set of physics that are deep enough to cater to RBI Baseball players while offering up the welcome addition of some improved modes. Franchise mode alone feels like a proper extension of the brand, with its irreverent sense of humour lending a welcome nuance to an otherwise content-heavy sports simulation.
