Cyber Shadow is the exciting product of melding memorable NES classics such as Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden. It's difficult and frustrating at times, but the stylish 8-bit look, bopping soundtrack and enjoyable gameplay result in a quality action-platformer.

Cyber Shadow isn't as exceptional as Shovel Knight, but it's a darn good attempt at making a Ninja Gaiden game. In many ways, I had more fun with it than I did with The Messenger, and it feels both modern and nostalgic. It's mostly held back by a few frustrating design decisions and a forgettable cast and story. If you like NES-hard games but dislike NES-frustrating difficulty, then Cyber Shadow will hit the mark for you.

After the tedious early stages and a few upgrades, Cyber Shadow shows its value. The gameplay is much more appealing after the first half of the game. However, it still lacks innovation. Despite those problems, it is easily recommended for those interested in the classic 8-bit era, especially for its great visuals, sound and narrative.

Cyber Shadow is a beautiful, lovingly-crafted gut-punch of an experience. Get ready to throw some controllers.

undefined.Through it all, Cyber Shadow knows why people have fond memories of NES-era action platformers, whether it's the thoughtful level layouts, unforgettable boss battles, or eye-catching visual embellishments. This is not a game for the faint of heart, but more for the persistent. I came away from this retro romp satisfied, primarily because it harkens back to the classics while still carving out a distinctive game that rightfully deserves to enter the pantheon of stellar 2D ninja games that includes the likes of Ninja Gaiden and The Messenger.

Cyber Shadow is definitely a genuine old-school experience which mostly works in its favour although it can be a frustrating test of patience at times. No matter which way you slice it, if you enjoy old-school 2D action games, playing Cyber Shadow is a must.

In a sea of 8-bit throwbacks and NES homages, Cyber Shadow truly stands out among the crowd. Mechanical Head Studios and Yacht Club Games have delivered an experience that combines the graphics and gameplay of the era with the benefit of modern elements. The result is an experience that's difficult where it needs to be, but never unfairly so. For fans of action-platformers, old-school enthusiasts, or players just looking to get lost in some gorgeous 8-bit visuals, Cyber Shadow is a must-play game.

Cyber Shadow is the quintessential 2D retro-style ninja platformer. Aarne Hunziker has absolutely outdone himself with this title in every sense of the word. I genuinely don’t have anything negative to say about it, and even the one thing I did have a slight problem with I wouldn’t change (that being checkpoint frequency). The difficulty can feel frustrating at times, but it is in no way insurmountable, and honestly just gives it more of a retro vibe. Cyber Shadow excels in every way through its beautiful presentation, a soundtrack that slaps harder with each new song, a touching story, and absolutely thrilling gameplay. This is an absolute must play for any fans of 2D platformers.

Cyber Shadow is an attempt for lightning to strike twice with Yacht Club and while the presentation and music are absolutely brilliant its missed some of the best aspects that made Shovel Knight work, like the combat, story and characters which really kept the world structure together.

The game hits the mark on the looks of a retro side-scrolling ninja game of the past. My wish however is better puzzle play and in-game mechanics.

Cyber Shadow is a prodigious and meticulous work of artisan, classic way and with few names like yesteryear. A superb action-platformer arcade with a pampered and measured visual, sound and playable design. Cyber Shadow is pure fun, and a game that has to be known and played by more people than those of us wallowing in nostalgia and the past.

It is easy to enjoy Cyber Shadow, as well as to realize that it is the fruit of a lot of love and hard work. The title is undoubtedly one of the most striking releases of 2021 and an indie that deserves to be remembered (and played) for a long time, especially on the Switch. This is a refined game as a whole, which knows how to respect nostalgia without fear of taking certain liberties and fully addresses the issue of the highest difficulty. Be sure to give Cyber Shadow a chance.

Cyber-Shadow feels a bit like that guy/gal at a party you didn’t get a chance to talk to because they blended in too well with all the other retro looking games, I mean party guests. But if you take the time to talk to them, get to know them. There really is an entertaining game here. Cyber-Shadow’s stand out features are easily; it’s fantastic soundtrack, its cyber ninja aesthetic and its tough but ultimately enjoyable gameplay. The game is tough but not to the extent that I wanted to fling my controller into the PC. If you have room in your life for another retro inspired classic Cyber-Shadow won’t disappoint.

Cyber Shadow isn’t merely a nostalgia inducing adventure, but a triumph of modern game design. It’s demanding, it’s challenging, and despite a few exaggerated difficulty spikes, it grabs us with its rewarding easy to understand but hard to master gameplay. It’s a visual and auditory delight from beginning until end, and a game to which we will keep coming back in the future. Cyber Shadow is a game of undeniable quality, and one of this year’s first mandatory experiences.

It doesn’t make excuses, nor does it hold your hand. It preserves the sanctity of gamers who appreciate the challenge granted to them in the title’s mentioned at the beginning of this review. Cyber Shadow is certainly worthwhile, if you’re prepared to get your butt handed to you.

As Yacht Club Games’s first non-Shovel Knight IP, and as a work of individual love and passion developed over many, many years, there has been a ton of hype around Cyber Shadow among lovers of indie platformers. Cyber Shadow does not disappoint. While its simplicity compared to another recent Ninja Gaiden-inspired game may leave you wanting a tad more, the game as it is is challenging, creative, and absolutely a blast to play.
