Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a surprisingly strong turn for a game adapted from a Marvel property. It focuses on the team dynamic to fill out its gameplay and relies on strong writing to carry its linear campaign while boasting nuanced performances and a soundtrack that would make James Gunn blush.
Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have managed the license balancing act that few would have expected: From the flop of 2020 to the hot GotY candidate in 2021. With a heavy dose of wit, charm and plenty of 80s vibes, Eidos Montreal has shown a flair for the brand and fully catapulted Guardians into our hearts. After last year's Avengers fiasco, the single-player adventure is an absolute surprise hit and the necessary redemption for battered Marvel souls. Thanks to the glorious music selection, the lovable characters and the thrillingly staged story around five likeable messes, Eidos Montreal's licensed implementation has become an absolutely well-rounded affair. The relationships between the protagonists seem tangible and real, the group dynamics are worked out in detail and the many comic book references make you want more. It's a real pleasure to watch your pals tease, argue or get along and see how they keep growing together as a team. The shallow and rather rudimentary battles lack depth and overview, but are still very motivating. Even minor technical glitches can't detract from the game's great fun.

If Guardians of the Galaxy had Returnal’s combat and traversal, it would be a real Game of the Year contender, but it’s the few mechanical flaws that hold it back.
Overall, this is a brilliantly fun, wild and upbeat action ride.
Ultimately, that’s what I enjoyed the most from the game, the vibes, and if you’re a fan of the Guardians franchise, the game does enough to distinguish itself from other iterations of these characters.
Guardians of the Galaxy shines when it focuses on the characters and the world around them. It might not be the most innovative game this year, but it excellently executes the tried-and-true linear action-adventure formula to deliver a great single-player experience.
If you like space adventures as well as the bicker and banter of Star-Lord and the gang, Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy is definitely for you.
Despite some issues with bugs and shooting that could use a little more weight behind it, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy tells a fantastic story that kept me glued to my seat until the very end. An excellent voice cast, killer 80s soundtrack, and strategic combat sweetened the deal. Anyone looking for a fun action game should consider checking it out, and for fans of the Guardians, this is an absolute must-play.
A fun and unique experience, one that attracts you with its world and character banter. It would definitely have benefited from some extra development time, though.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a good superhero game. It may not be the best out there, but it is in the top 5. If you are a true Marvel fan familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy universe it hits the perfect notes in almost perfect order. It tried to balance the videogames gameplay with a cinematic experience, focusing on delivering a quality single player experience.

Eidos Montral has actually flarkin' done it - Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy may not be much of an RPG, but it delivers a heart-warming Marvel adventure that has an identity all its own.
That, though, isn’t to denigrate the power of a good blaster. The addition of a Sekiro-like stagger meter makes some enemies more bullet spongy than normal, but otherwise there’s something very old-school about the gunplay here. Success means constant movement, matching elemental weaknesses, and carefully employing the other Guardians as support characters. The battlefields are chaotic, but once there’s enough special moves at play to combine, the game is blissfully freeing in a way that not many shooters are these days.
After stumbling out the gate with last year’s Avengers, Square Enix has managed to steady the ship with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. For the story alone, the game is well-worth playing, but it’s the abundance of lore, well-written dialogue and gorgeous locales that elevate it as one of the best Marvel games to date.
Whether or not you're a die-hard fan of the Multiverse's most ramshackle supergroup, let yourself be enchanted by the extravagant style and personality of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and set off with them for the stars.
