It’s fair to say New World hasn’t been a total failure so far for Amazon. The servers are constantly full and nearly one million concurrent Steam players is a mark of success for any game. However, on a mechanical level there are many things lacking, that detract from the whole experience. A lack of any meaningful quest content, combat that isn’t fun for over half the game and an apparent drought of endgame content make it a game that might be worth skipping over until a few content updates or expansions. Plus when the most fun aspect of your game is picking flowers as opposed to slaying beasts or completing quests, maybe some of the game needs a rework.

New World might be the first ever MMORPG in my two decades of playing these titles that made me hit a wall and go “Yeah – this isn’t fun, I’m out.” That’s saying something, considering I’ve reviewed both TERA and Bless Unleashed.

New World is relatively fun and has a ton of potential, but it suffers from unnecessary issues that might be impossible to fix and offers next to no story to keep the players interested.

Neither meat nor fish, New World amazes but not in a positive sense. Not everything is to be thrown away: the mass game created by Amazon Games can entertain and has potential, but the absence of identity and technical problems weigh.

Amazon Studios hasn't got off to a bad start with New World, but they still have a long way to go.

New World has the mechanical foundations of a decent MMO, with passable combat and good visuals, but its hopes are extinguished at the hands of dreadful PvE design. The few distinctive experiences that it does have, locked away behind high levels as if the game knows it has precious little to offer, are not worth the hours of mind numbing grind to get there.

New World is off to a rocky start, but if Amazon can right the ship and address real player concerns, it has the chance to be something really special. But right now, it’s an okay experience overall that leaves me wanting more in order to stick around.

New World brings a lot of excellent MMO twists to the table, but its marred by bugs, stale quests, and a lack of endgame content.

A stellar crafting experience and surprisingly slick combat aren't enough to compensate for the flaws in New World's humdrum and frustrating quest design.

High-stakes PvP battles and top-notch production values bolster Amazon's MMORPG, even if its PvE content and occasionally frustrating systems may leave some players wanting.

New World is a very pretty survival-MMORPG hybrid that saves its best moments for the endgame – but you have to be willing to grind like hell to get to them.

New World's engaging crafting and faction rivalries are held back by abysmal PvE and a boring world.

New World could be presented as a gateway to MMOs (“My First MMO,” if you will). The simplistic combat may entice those who have been overwhelmed by the busy hotbars of games like Final Fantasy XIV. The many allusions to survival games also provide an easy way to integrate those new to the genre. But I don’t believe everything on offer here is going to pull anyone away from the titan MMOs still holding their thrones. New World is at its best when you wander into the dense forests and toil away endlessly with the (arguably therapeutic) gathering portion of the game. Those pork chops and apple sauce meals won’t cook themselves, after all.

Amazon has done a decent job with New World with its exquisite visuals and overall environment. They just need to smooth out those rough edges and implement some mounts!

New World can be described as a work in progress, one that is of very high quality, with the core game's mechanics being in place and ready to take the brunt of a top-tier title, but there is still not enough meat on the figurative bones.

New World is not a paradise for all comers by any means. It's an escape for those willing to put up with some oddly misbalanced elements to get a taste of some really excellent PvP encounters. If you have a guild ready to grind out results and become kind of the mountain then New World is worth a look.

There's a kind of meditative quality about hiking to a quest kilometers away, cutting a tree or two, hitting a couple of rocks and soaking in the scenery. Few games have made walking to objectives a worthwhile experience. But when these walks are more interesting than the objectives, there's a problem.

I can’t recommend New World to anyone who isn’t already 100% invested in the idea of faction politics and PvP, but there’s a solid foundation here. Give it an expansion or two, and this could turn into something truly special.

New World is an MMORPG for fans of the genre. Although the work that Amazon Game Studios presents has interesting ideas for its multiplayer section, this experience will not change your opinion regarding this type of games.
