Overall, Tails of Iron ties together a beautiful medieval world with RPG mechanics and a brutal combat system for a challenging adventure RPG you’ll be thinking about long after you put the controller down. Combat is brutally difficult, but although you’ll often be left howling at a defeat, Tails of Iron’s charming world and in-depth combat customisation will have you back before long, ready to try again. Oh, and just one more time for good measure: Damn you, Clubba!
Odd inventory design niggles aside and shopworn concepts aside, Tails of Iron is beautifully presented and a roundly entertaining, surprisingly grim action RPG that boasts a grandly enjoyable combat system. Fans of punishing action RPGs and grimdark fairy-tales will find much to love here.
Tails of Iron is a difficult, brutal and fascinating action-RPG, a black fairy tale that deserves attention, especially if you want an adventure with tight and powerful combats.

I had a really good time playing through Tails of Iron’s adventure, with the gorgeous visuals and robust combat mechanics the stand-out features. It was easy to root for Redgi to succeed, whilst venturing further across the world and vanquishing the enemies that roam it was a real treat. It was guilty of being a little bit repetitive with some of its side quests and the world isn’t as expansive as similar titles in the genre, but Tails of Iron never outstays its welcome and doesn’t stop being fun to play. Add to that the fact that it runs really smoothly on the Nintendo Switch and it becomes clear that it’s an adventure that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.
Tails of Iron is a 2D action adventure with RPG elements, and various soulslike formulas particularly framed in demanding combat. Despite the many RPG elements, the core of the adventure is combat, so the progress ends up being quite linear and the lack of variety of situations is accused. Of course, the combat is well implemented - with many familiar elements from the Souls franchise - and it is quite fair as well as demanding. Audiovisually is at another level for the quality and the care put by the developers. One of the indie surprises of the year.

Tails of Iron borrows inspiration from other challenging games, but its beautifully crafted world and thought-provoking narrative definitely deserve your attention. Every new area offers more to explore and tests your skills to see this rodent’s adventure through until the end. Tails of Iron is an under-rat-ed gem that will make a mighty fine addition to your indie game collection this year despite some rare bugs and needed updates to the combat systems.
Tails of Iron's biggest highlight is its fun and challenging combat. The title is a pleasant surprise and one of the best indies games of the year.

Not every task and mission is equally interesting and some of Tails’ movement mechanics feel slightly unresponsive, but those are small dings against an otherwise very enjoyable rat-centric game, and we don’t have nearly enough of those.
Essential for the remainder of the year and will surely be on the indies podium of 2021.

Tails of Iron may be an indie title, but this Souls-like RPG sure hits like an AAA experience in every sense.
This is a title that hit me a bit out of nowhere, took my lunch money, and is now making me earn it back one challenging battle at a time… and for the most part you can count me impressed...
Whilst the combat can be samey it is also tightly constructed and is only a minor gripe in what is otherwise a highly polished game that looks great, sounds great, and is just a joy to play. Redgi is a hero and a legend that you won’t want to leave alone until he has his rightful place on his throne and his Father’s memory avenged. This is one rat that is most welcome in any gamers home.
Tails of Iron is a hidden gem within the dark fantasy genre and well-worth exploring if you don't mind all the death that will follow.
Presenting itself as a unique game in many ways, Tails of Iron is capable of delivering hours of fun. Among the highlights, we have challenging combats and a beautiful visual and sound presentation. That so, the title shows itself imposing and is able to shine, as well as the lustrous crown of the Throne of the Rats, used by the brave Redgi in the eternal war between rats and frogs.

Check out my review of Tails of Iron and follow our journey of Redgi the rat. Heir to throne Redgi must help rebuild his kingdom after the pond scum (frogs) trash the place. This game definitely has a darker side to it. Don’t worry though, Redgi will save the day or die trying.
An exhilarating 2D soulslike set in a remarkably charming world, Tails of Iron is a surprise GOTY candidate. You’ll croak and die often due to the formidable combat but the narrative and systems will keep you coming back for more, like a rat does to cheese.
