As it stands now, Achilles: Legends Untold is an undercooked and fairly broken romp through ancient Greece, with underwhelming combat and a world that's full of pretty things to look at but with little to do in it.

There are flashes of a great game in Achilles: Legends Untold, which developer Dark Point Games has clearly put a great deal of effort into it.

The Greek Myths have been plundered by video game developers to such a degree it's hard to conceive that a fresh take could be even possible. Remarkably, Achilles: Legends Untold offers just that. This action-adventure might be a little rough around the edges, but that arguably adds to its charm. If you can put up with some nasty difficulty spikes then you'll find a remarkable world of myths and legends to explore.

Achilles: Legends Untold is a good mix between RPGs with hack and slash action like Diablo and souls-likes in which every checkpoint is an achievement. The wide range of weapons, each with unique characteristics and combat styles, invite experimentation even to just see the animations of the protagonist as he crushes, kills and rips apart enemies. The story set in Greek mythology could only be interesting, and the fights are fun, even if some enemies appear out of the blue due to the absence of zoom. There are no classes - Achilles is Achilles! - but quite different builds can be created.

Achilles: Legends Untold is a safe and standard hack-and-slash dungeon crawler. Its ancient Greek setting and attractive environments help it stand out a bit, but on the whole it’s a formulaic game. The Soulslike mechanics aren’t especially well developed but represent a small element of originality. If fans of the genre can look past the lackluster missions, script and acting, they’ll probably enjoy the action.

Achilles: Legends Untold is a game that knows what it wants to be and achieves it perfectly. It's an ideal mix between the Diablo formula, with an isometric perspective and a very similar way of playing, and the souls genre, with a fairly aggressive but fair difficulty and with a fair and careful learning curve. In addition, whenever you die, you will lose those experience points and have a chance to recover them.

Achilles: Legends Untold is a serviceable indie Soulslike experience with an isometric camera angle that doesn't introduce anything revolutionary. Don't be fooled by the Diablo-esque visual style either, because this is not a dungeon crawling looter. There's no doubt that the game is in a much better state than it was in Early Access, but it still suffers from some core issues with its gameplay mechanics.

Achilles: Legends Untold feels like there were several great ideas thrown together but were ultimately let down by poor execution. The game has some interesting aspects, like fusing Souls-styled gameplay with a loot-focused action RPG gameplay loop, but the combat never really feels satisfying and the setting is little more than an excuse to get you out there to kill things.

Achilles: Legends Untold is a functional isometric souls-like that plays well enough and has plenty of territory to explore but falls short in its Switch port. It isn't completely unenjoyable by any means and mechanically it is quite solid. But ultimately through the combination of a rough Switch port, poor voice acting, and a general struggle to do anything that stands out, it winds up being a forgettable journey.

If we weren't going through a period where Game of the Year nominations are being throwed at us in bulk, I'd say give it a chance, but I'm sure there are other games you should be playing.

Achilles: Legends Untold feels like a mixture of Diablo and Dark Souls. Despite showing great potential the mechanics fail to work properly especially in crowded battles. Content wise the game is a bit hit and miss too where it offers variety of weapons and items but lacks when it comes to upgrades, special abilities or side quests. Overall, Achilles: Legends Untold is not a perfect or great game but still Action RPG lovers might enjoy its 20 hours long story.

A pleasant surprise. It's not usual action RPG, it's a nice fusion of two genres that we could briefly describe as Diablo with Souls elements. It works, it's fun, it has style.

Achilles: Legends Untold honors the legacy of both the character that stars in the game, and the good references that the production is inspired by. Beautiful and enjoyable to play, it has its own heels, but, precise and efficient as the hero, it surprises as one of the best works of the genre.

Achilles: Legends Untold does a fantastic job of working with the legend of Achilles and seamlessly integrating it into an isometric, Souls-like RPG. The graphics are appealing, the story is engaging and keeps you hooked, and at the same time, the game gives you the freedom to explore beautiful locations and enjoy battles against mythological creatures. The variety of enemies is truly diverse, as is the range of weapons and equipment. It’s a real shame there’s no map in the game, because the locations are very well-designed with seamless transitions—but wandering around blindly just isn’t the same. But if you use the hint to tell you which way to go while completing a quest, you’ll miss out on a lot of fun and great battles. You can tell the game is in early access, as there are a few technical bugs and occasionally some odd AI behavior—mostly with weaker enemies. Mythological creatures and bosses behave as expected and in line with their nature, and they are really well-designed. Given that the developers are very active and communicate with the community, they fix reported issues very quickly while also adding new content. The game will definitely entertain fans of solid Souls-style RPGs as well as lovers of mythology.

Review: Achilles: Legends Untold on Nintendo Switch video thumbnail

Overall, Achilles: Legends Untold is a pretty decent game. Unfortunately, the Switch port does some injustices. The graphics aren’t the best and the longer-than-usual black loading screens leave little to be desired. I can’t blame the game devs for that but it does diminish the experience a little bit. As mentioned, the voice acting isn’t the greatest and can, at times, be off-putting. Aside from this, it’s a good game. I enjoyed the combat, despite it not being as souls-like as expected, and the devs did give an in-depth look into the Achilles story. As a game, I definitely recommend it to fans of RPGs and fans of mythology across all consoles, not just the Switch.
