Homeworld Remastered Collection Reviews
Despite some needless changes to Homeworld 1's mechanics, this is still a fantastic remastered collection by Gearbox that shouldn't be missed by newcomers to the series or fans who have been itching to replay the series.
Homeworld Remastered delivers a beautiful but flawed HD update of two of the greatest RTS ever. While Homeworld 2 is stable, bugs in Homeworld will confound newcomers while many of the fundamental changes therein may alienate veterans.
Gearbox has taken great care with their treatment of these RTS classics, going so far as to hire on some of the original developers to assist with their work. The visuals are a clear stand-out, but the classic gameplay still shines through in 'Homeworld Remastered Collection.' For enthusiasts who have been struggling to find a suitable medium on which to play 'Homeworld', this is the perfect gift of nostalgia and modern gaming sensibilities. For those who are inexperienced with the series and have any interest in the RTS genre, this compilation will keep you entertained for quite some time.
The Homeworld Remastered Collection is an excellent example of how to bring classic RTS gameplay into modern gaming. While there are a few issues with pacing at the beginning of games, the fluid combat, three-dimensional strategy and excellent attention to detail makes this a hugely unique and immersive gameplay experience.
The Homeworld Remastered Collection offers players access to two of the best space-based strategy titles ever created and allows them to do so on modern machines, with no worries about compatibility or other hardware problems, which means that the fan community should be grateful for the work Gearbox has put in.
For real time strategy fans, this is nothing short of a must-buy, while those with the patience to get to grips with Homeworld's idiosyncratic mechanics will find their time richly rewarded.
The titan of the RTS genre is back, made all pretty, and still as playable and enthralling as ever. This is one that deserves to be in your library.
Gearbox has achieved a nigh-on perfect remastering of Homeworld with this collection, making minor tweaks without disrupting the balance of what made them such classics in the first place. Screens don't really do it justice but the pitched space battles truly are a sight to behold, and considering you're getting two fantastic games for a budget price it's difficult to resist. The only problem I can see is those who want more beyond the final credits - they unfortunately really don't make them like this anymore.
The Homeworld: Remastered Collection is an excellent game that is well worth any RTS lovers' time.
Gearbox Software today owns the Homeworld IP and remastering the originals might seem a 'cash grab' at first glance, but considering the enormity of their effort to bring Relic's space RTS masterpiece of the late 90s and early 2000s into today's gaming arena, they more than prove their commitment.
To see a fading classic rejuvenated with such a clear display of visual craftsmanship sets the bar going forward for any other would-be remastered title. And yet the untouched gameplay manages to stand the test of time, offering an engaging and challenging experience able to stand on equal ground and even eclipse some of the more recent RTS offerings. Homeworld Remastered Collection is a testament to game development done right, both in its original form and in the meticulously updated version, and one that should not be overlooked by any fan of the genre.
The way Remasters should be made
While we're sceptical about the rather rushed out nature of this remaster, it has to be said that Homeworld is still a fantastic Real Time Strategy game and should be in the library of any one with an interest in the genre.
The Homeworld collection is a fantastic and complex RTS that will challenge players with an almost intimidating amount of depth of choice.
Homeworld is just as revolutionary in 2015 as it was in 1999—and now it looks great too.
It has been over 15 years since the original Homeworld was released, and within that time many games have attempted to build upon the success without much aplomb. Homeworld Remastered Collection stands the testament of time allowing a new audience to experience what began over 15 years ago, and had every gamer looking into the night sky.
A classic sci-fi saga that's stood the test of time. Thanks to a sympathetic visual update, the graphics look spectacular even by today's high standards, while the well-balanced gameplay and excellent mission design haven't dated much at all. Old fans might not like the way the original Homeworld has been fixed to reflect changes made for the sequel, but it's great to see two legends not just return, but reaffirm what made them legendary in the first place.
The huge amount of work that went into modernising and reinterpreting the many visuals, from the ships to the wonderfully abstract nebulous backdrops feel like a massive love letter to both the original game, and to the fans who love it.
Despite its age, Homeworld still managed to provide a quality RTS experience unlike any other.
Homeworld Remastered Collection not only brings two classic games back for longtime fans, it will surely capture a new generation with its unique perspective, brilliant storyline, and engrossing gameplay.
