Dead Rising's over the top zombie shenanigans still hold up in 2024, but next to the remaster from 2016, this is definitely geared more toward first-time players than returning fans.

Even if Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster tones down the diamond-sharp edges of the original game a little too much, every single change ultimately works towards making it unarguably the best way to experience Dead Rising, especially for a long-time fan who wants to revisit Willamette in a more approachable game.

Capcom's tonally chaotic zombie game remains charming nearly 20 years later despite some obvious flaws.

For a remaster, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster brings everything you love from the original and clips the strings that held it back decades ago. While it doesn’t bring an entirely new experience, this zombie hack and slash is brought back to life with updated visuals and a great cast to back it up.

This game is as unforgiving at the start as it was in 2006, but if you want a solid zombie survival experience akin to Dawn of the Dead, you can’t do much better than the mall mayhem of Willamette in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is a revamped version of a game we've been missing. Frank West's adventure is still as fun as ever and now you can enjoy it like never before. The playable improvements are more than welcome and the graphical plot stands out much more than expected. Let's kill zombies!

Originally a beloved Capcom title, this remake enhances the gameplay with modern quality-of-life improvements, while staying true to its roots in many ways. From upgraded graphics with RE Engine to improved survivor AI, the experience is more accessible, but this might divide long-time fans. The remaster succeeds in updating a classic, appealing to both newcomers and veterans, though some might argue that the essence of the original's hardcore difficulty has been softened. An impressive rework that balances nostalgia with modern sensibilities.

For those that didn't experience Dead Rising back in the day, you are in for a treat. While not much has changed on the surface, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster goes so far beyond just giving the game a fresh lick of paint, tightening up gameplay, reimagining parts of the world, but still making for a damn fine and fun game to play. Go get 'em Frank, your time is not done!

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is yet another great example of Capcom's ability to breathe new life into a dated game. While it doesn't add any significant new additions to the original content like we've seen the company do with Resident Evil, the visual and quality-of-life improvements make this a fantastic game for Dead Rising veterans and a must-play for new players. If you're yet to experience the thrill of literally mowing down zombies with a lawn mower while suited and booted with a horse mask on your noggin, now is the time to dive in.

Dead Rising is still heaps of daft, gory fun, and the Deluxe Remaster is an excellent excuse to catch up with Frank. Almost every change that's been made to the new release is for the better, and while it won't blow your socks off like Capcom's other revisited classic, we're more than happy to spend another 72 hours with Mr West. He's covered wars, you know.

If you never played Dead Rising before, then Deluxe Remaster is probably the thing you should be looking for. It's a great game and you can always try the original at a later date. But for die-hard fans the situation is quite different. Deluxe Remaster is mostly the same old thing you already know and love. One can only hope that by buying this we can show Capcom that Dead Rising still is such a unique franchise that really needs to come back with a new title.

Overall, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is a genuinely well put together remake, but it’s one that by nature of its approach can’t help but stay caught between two eras. If you’re a newcomer wanting to play for the first time or a returning veteran with priors, there’s no doubt that this is the definitive version. That said, by nature of being so faithful to the 2006 version – aside from the significant graphical upgrade, new voice lines, lighting, better mechanics, and such – enough slight drawbacks slowly pile up to prevent it from becoming the ultimate perfect package it perhaps could have been. The emphasis on backtracking still annoys, as does the incredibly simplistic boss fights, yet there’s no denying that, faults and all, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster solidifies Capcom as the king of the modern remake.

Everything you enjoyed from Dead Rising is here and the flurry of meaningful enhancements to the core game make it the complete package. Sure, some lingering quibbles remain from the original game like the time-sensitive gameplay, the pop-in, and bosses that repeat the same predictable attack patterns, yet this remaster refines many of the drawbacks of the original game, and fine-tunes it for a game befitting of the year 2024. Now get out there, snap photos, mow down zombies, and savor all the juicy lunacy Dead Rising has to offer - cos it's a real treat.

Dead Rising’s gameplay was revolutionary back in 2006 and Deluxe Remaster proves that two generations later, the series still has a leg to stand on. With some modest improvements and an overhaul to the visuals, Capcom has effortlessly revived a cult classic in a way that feels like it never left. It just feels so damn good to be back in Willamette.
