Greedfall The Dying World is a really fun game, the true potential of which is crushed by its unfinished state.

Greedfall II had a big ask to follow on from the original which I enjoyed a lot even if it had its annoyances and limitations such as repetitive dialogue choices. Greedfall II feels much more refined in terms of graphics, story and dialogue. The new combat system was a bold choice but it’s a risk, allowing players to try their hand at both real time and tactical styles. Returning players will find a lot to enjoy here, but newer players will be able to pick things up easily enough as well.

GreedFall: The Dying World managed to charm me with its varied game world, companion management and rock-solid story. I therefore opted for the story mode. On the other hand, I couldn't be pleased by the many bugs and glitches I ran into (just like in Styx: Blades of Greed), the gibberish chatter that distracted me and that overwhelming feeling that the game feels unfinished. If I had been from Spiders I would have stayed in early access for another six months and taken the feedback from the community or internal testers to heart. The game is ambitious, you have to call a cat a cat, the ideas and the concept are good but you feel from everything that it rattles. But as I said, Nacon is in dirty papers and they will need pennies. This does not benefit the final quality of the game.

Though the narrative is laudable both in terms of its uniqueness and for mirroring similar real-world conflicts from the colonized’s point of view, the game falls afoul of some of the same shortcomings as its predecessor and, in the case of its revamped combat system, even makes some new missteps all of its own.

Greedfall: The Dying World is a great return to its rich universe by flipping the perspective of the main storyline and letting players view the story from another angle, the islanders’ point of view. This narrative shift is one of the game’s strongest selling points, adding emotional depth and moral ambiguity to the conflict between colonists and natives. The world- building, faction dynamics, and player- driven choices remain engaging and heighten the replayability, especially for diehard fans of story-driven RPGs. However, while the foundation is solid, the execution isn’t always consistent. The writing and voice acting fluctuate in quality, and not every quest carries the same narrative weight of consequence. The RPG systems – skills, attributes, and talents – offer satisfying freedom in shaping your character as you want, but the combat system, despite its added tactical options, can feel somewhat limited and occasionally unbalanced, with basic attacks often overshadowing abilities. In the end, the game succeeds in expanding the Greedfall universe with meaningful ideas and player agency, but it falls slightly short of its full potential due to a lack of polish and consistency in key areas.

GreedFall 2: The Dying World gets a lot right and fans of the first game should be pleased, though the sequel's shift in combat style somewhat limits accessibility and makes it a tough sell to newcomers.

GreedFall: The Dying World is a passionate and ambitious RPG that doesn’t always hit every mark, but delivers an experience that’s rich, engaging, and full of character. It may not have the polish of bigger titles, and it occasionally struggles under the weight of its own ambition, but there’s something undeniably compelling about what it offers. For fans of classic RPGs and choice-driven storytelling, this is a journey well worth taking. A passionate and ambitious RPG that may not be perfect, but delivers a rich and rewarding experience for those willing to embrace its world.

Exploring, making choices in a world full of conflict. But fights that don't click and systems that falter. An RPG with potential, but without real impact. The beginning is here. There is no sequel. You keep walking around. But not always for the right reasons.

GreedFall: The Dying World leaves much to be desired. Despite offering an engaging story and a strong cast of characters, technical problems abound, making the experience far more frustrating than it’s worth.

Greedfall 2: The Dying World is a decent RPG with a fairly interesting story, but the combat really drags the experience down.

GreedFall II: The Dying World is an interesting yet problematic RPG in the end. It’s easy to see what makes it strong. The world-building is still outstanding, and the story’s colonial themes are still strong and make you think. The tactical combat system adds depth to strategy, while the RPG mechanisms for gear and skills let you customize your character in a meaningful way.

GreedFall: The Dying World sports good visuals, a decent story, and genuinely interesting world-building, but it suffers from a myriad of bugs and optimization issues even after the full release. The combat is also not as good as it should be. It has heart, but it often feels like a promising RPG that needed more time in the oven. As of now, this is definitely a game worth getting on sale.

Greedfall: The Dying World nails its characters and lore, but uneven pacing, repetitive combat, and constant glitches keep it from living up to its potential.

GreedFall: The Dying World is a game that built upon the potential of its predecessor, and in many ways, it succeeded in this. They created a game that many RPG fans have been aching for: storytelling, choices, and world. Unfortunately, the tactical experience, while good, was lacking in finesse. The game spent 18 months in early access, and I believe it was time well spent, on PC. The console experience had much to be desired, but nothing a few patches can’t fix, I hope.

GreedFall: The Dying World had a rather difficult task. Not only did it have to build on the strengths of the first chapter released in 2019, but it also had to be a test of maturity for the Spiders development team, which has historically been torn between heart and compromise. The ambition is clear: an even bigger RPG packed with content, with strong themes and difficult choices for the player. However, where aspiration gave way to risk was in revolutionizing the popular combat system, abandoning the action setting in favor of real-time turn-based combat. This is a choice that did not fully convince us and which, we suspect, could alienate some of the audience that loved its predecessor. The end result is therefore not far removed from the software house's tradition, partly due to a technical aspect that is harsh at times, an overly uneven pace, and combat that is not as polished as one might have expected.

The more I played Greedfall 2, the more I loved it. And no small amount of that is due to how much it made me feel like I was playing Neverwinter Nights all over again. Which made me realise just how much I’d missed that classical gameplay style. That Greedfall 2 made me feel like that all over again about classic CRPG gameplay is no small praise indeed.

Greedfall 2: The Dying World makes an attempt to be a swashbuckling, seafaring pirate thriller, but gets muddled in its own politics and bogged down by too many clashing systems.
