Xeen and Square Enix, in stark contrast with what the original development team did 31 years ago, played it very safe, with a remake that changes nothing in terms of gameplay, even where some corrections where badly needed. Therefore, this is nothing more than a modernized version of a good JRPG

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a flawless JRPG experience. It takes an old gem masterpiece from the golden age and refines it into an epic masterpiece with an AA budget than what Square Enix typically spits out of its mouth.

Thirty years since the original release of the game is a raggedy time, but the creators of the remake have managed to preserve the old-school atmosphere while dressing it in more contemporary clothes. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is still a piece of good jRPG for fans of the genre, even if the solutions introduced may not appeal to everyone.

Square Enix picked an exceptional game to remake, and then did an exceptional job in remaking it. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a true epic and a game that comes across as ambitious to this day. While the raw storytelling is a little limited, the concept is strong and compelling, the combat system is tactical and entertaining, and bringing the game into three dimensions means that we can finally see the full scope and vision behind this adventure of generational consequence.

Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven is a fantastic JRPG and I hope this is the opportunity for it to connect with more people. SaGa is a series whose experimentation makes it have very high good moments, but extremely difficult to digest bad moments and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is one of the highest points it has hit and becomes the best way for anyone to try this series for the first time.

From the moment I played the demo at PAX West to when I rolled credits and immediately dove back in, I've been completely enamored with its nonlinear trappings and charming world-building. It's my sincere hope that the team that brought this remake to life will be given the reins to a Romancing SaGa 3 remake and then new SaGa titles moving forward, because they hit a grand slam with this one. There's no doubt on my end – cold or otherwise: Revenge is a dish best served with romance.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is everything a remake should be. It polishes and shines the strongest elements of the original game while adding just enough modernization and new features to make it feel accessible to a newer audience. Everything from the gameplay to the graphics absolutely sparkles, and it is easy to understand why Romancing SaGa 2 was a cult classic. Only a somewhat thin SNES-style story holds backthe game slightly, and even that is a minor complaint. In a year filled with incredibly strong RPGs, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven might still be one of the best.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a great remake of a classic that deserves a lot more attention than it has received over the years. It's the perfect blend between the series' traditional systems and has a greater emphasis on storytelling that is rarely seen in the franchise. Its modernization solves several of the problems of the original and, even with its limitations, it is a great experience for fans of the genre who want something different.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a remake that beautifully blends classic JRPG elements with modern gameplay features. You take on the role of various characters across generations as they face off against seven former heroes who have now become villains. The game’s unique gameplay mechanic, known as the Inheritance System, allows you to pass down skills from one character to the next. While the graphics and music are impressive, the story is a bit simplistic. However, if you enjoy a good challenge, the overall experience is definitely enjoyable.

Square Enix returns again this year in another attempt to revitalize some of its old titles and introduce them to a new generation of players in Romancing SaGa 2, and although some aspects of this remake are weak compared to other games in the same category, it manages to succeed in maintaining the original spirit of one of the classic JRPGs.

Romancing SaGa 2: Return of the Seven is a fantastic remake. It keeps the soul of the original alive, while refreshing it in a way that makes it a great modern RPG experience. Though the time hopping could sometimes feel surprising, as it is not obviously communicated with the player it effectively presents an epic time spanning story and having the heroes of old be the antagonists is still a fun angle even in 2024. Combat and other gameplay overhauls make this a joy to play and the definitive Romancing SaGa 2 experience.

And finally, the conclusion we can draw from this review is that Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven takes aspects of the original game and it improves them. If you were lucky enough (or unlucky, the game was quite unforgivable in the original versions) to play the remaster or even a fan translation of the '93 game, you will clearly see the improvements that Revenge of the Seven brings. If you're looking to spend dozens of hours in a well-made JRPG with gameplay systems that don't get boring, I highly recommend this game!

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven skillfully shows what a remake of an old classic can look like. It can still impress and both the beautiful visuals and the revised combat system provide hours of fun. You can even choose between the new or old soundtrack and listen to a complete voice-over. JRPG fans will not be able to avoid this game.

Romancing SaGa 2 is an RPG that I think is important for fans of the genre to play. Although the franchise is not the most popular here in the West, its importance and influence on role-playing games is undeniable. It's unbelievable to imagine that such a complex RPG, with varied and sophisticated systems and so many narrative ramifications, and with this level of world-building, was released in 1993. Many games can't reach that level of complexity these days.
