Eternal Strands is an action-adventure with a rather generic, if enjoyable, aesthetic and gameplay that takes a while to get going. However, when you manage to uncover its best cards, you'll find yourself immersed in a well-conceived, well-written and damn entertaining title.

I have waxes poetic about Eternal Strands for quite a while here and I am not going to lie, friends, gamers; we are starting 2025 off with a banger. Yes, I do not like the stamina system but when players are riding a dragon, chopping at its wing in hopes of making it land with that stellar soundtrack pumping; I mean it’s just a great time. I forget all about the floaty feeling movement, the stupid stamina system and any other gripes, because fighting those giant monsters and exploring this destroyed civilization is just that much fun. If you are remotely a fan of Dragon Age, Monster Hunter, Zelda, the Colossus games then I think you too will find some fun in Eternal Strands.

Eternal Strands is a pretty and yet a very shallow game, that is better be left ignored, unless you absolutely don't have anything else to play.

Mixing elements from Breath of the Wild with Shadow of the Colossus sounds amazing on paper, but Eternal Strands somehow renders it a merely average experience. The gameplay loop is fine, but slightly held back by backtracking and some noticeably absent features common to the genre (like a minimap and compass). I wanted to love the story considering this has some old-school Bioware talent behind it, but the lack of a hook in the plot and some very dull characters made me want to skip dialogue often. I like Eternal Strands well enough, but there's plenty of other similar games that offer a more compelling experience.

Eternal Strands is a big game with some big guts. It's awesome that this small team can make a game that stands tall on its own against other big names from the industry. Eternal Strands is entertaining, clever, and spontaneous. The game's different mechanics fold nicely into each other and produce a grounded gameplay loop that is super addicting. Exploring the extensive and differing lands never gets tiring and the voice acting that guides you are magnificent. Climbing is clumsy, controlling your character is incongruous, and multiple art design choices reads wrong, but everything woven together fabricates a game that is meticulous and endearing.

Eternal Strands is full of interesting and amazing ideas that unfortunately, some of them weren't implemented and executed properly. That being said, it's still an entertaining experience nonetheless.

Over the 30 hours spent in this game, not many of them felt like a chore, with exploration and tackling huge foes the bulk of my enjoyment. The story is good but it does get dragged down by exposition way too much even though the characters feel fully fleshed out and are even funny at times. The amalgamation of crafting and exploring is probably the best gameplay loop I’ve experienced for a while, even if it seems to drag on a little towards the end. All in all, for a first outing for a new developer, Yellow Brick Studios has created something magical that may not be for everyone but I’m sure it will be enjoyed thoroughly by many.

A fun and inventive action-RPG that combines a variety of mechanics with some fun characters, spells, and surprisingly in-depth worldbuilding.

Eternal Strands blends action, exploration, and magic in an adventure full of ambitious ideas. Its battles against massive foes and spell system stand out, but uneven execution and an unfulfilling exploration hold the experience back.

The game world is brought to life through the lore, and there’s a sense of historic high-magic and epic scale that matches the sweeping musical score, not to mention the pristine presentation of the game engine that provides a smooth experience. But, whilst the larger-scale enemies provide memorable battles, the moment-to-moment combat and incremental sense of hindered character progression makes this feel a very ‘by the numbers’ experience that doesn’t reward or satisfy individuality in playstyles, and forces a more linear approach to the game.

Eternal Strands is a triumph of game design, blending the best elements of Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus into a unique and unforgettable experience. Its rich narrative, innovative combat system, and breathtaking world make it a must-play for fans of the action-adventure genre. Yellow Brick Games has set a high bar with their debut title, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. The Enclave awaits, and it’s a journey you won’t want to miss.

The best thing I can say about Eternal Strands is that the game has its moments of epicness when you finally take down a boss battle. However, actually accomplishing that feat just feels too much like an annoying chore, especially when you have to wrestle and grapple with the janky and clunky mechanics of the game.

Eternal Strands is a game that manages to be both surprising and disappointing: boss fights are thrilling, but the same can’t be said for basic enemies; magic adds depth to combat, but weapons don’t match this depth; the story lacks epic moments, but the characters are very interesting. It’s the kind of indie game that needs to be taken in stride to fully enjoy its potential, as long as you overlook its flaws that might hinder the fun in the long run.

Eternal Strands is a bold title that challenges you to dream big. With its changing environment, new gaming methodologies, and mixed systems, it stands out in a sea of crowded action-adventure titles. For all its weaknesses, such as floaty fighting and shallow variety in its enemies, its strengths dominate its faults. For high-fantasy dreamers and investigation and creation games, the game is a thrill.

Eternal Strands is ultimately a game about hope in the face of devastation, about finding beauty in ruins, and about the choices we make when survival comes at a terrible cost. It's an experience that combines spectacular moments of grandeur with quiet periods of reflection, wrapped in systems that are both engaging to master and meaningful to the story being told.
