Doom: The Dark Ages Reviews
Captain America in a world of demons? DOOM: The Dark Ages does not revolutionize the series, but it offers extremely enjoyable gameplay. Satisfaction flows in liters, as does the blood of defeated enemies. There is spectacle.

Overall, it’s fair to say that id Software has once again succeeded in creating a game worthy of carrying the legendary DOOM name. The Dark Ages takes some risks and introduces new features, but in the end, most of these decisions and changes pay off in the final experience. The Dark Ages is an unforgettable, adrenaline-fueled festival of demon-slaying, and if you're a fan of the DOOM series—or first-person action games in general—you absolutely shouldn’t miss out on the thrill of playing it.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is the most badass DOOM has ever been, featuring a killer soundtrack, first-person melee combat better than it has any right to be, and the most intriguing version of The Doom Slayer we’ve ever seen.
While offering a much freer and more exaggerated power fantasy compared to DOOM Eternal, it also does a great job of setting itself apart from it.

DOOM: The Dark Ages manages to innovate in a positive way the solid gameplay of its predecessors. The shield mechanics are very good, giving the combat a new feel. The parts with Serrat (dragon) and Atlan (mecha) are quite fun, despite being few. The campaign has a reasonable story and its length is just right, but the collectibles and secrets are easier to discover in general. In the end, DOOM: The Dark Ages is worth playing, despite not offering any other content besides the campaign itself.

DOOM: The Dark Ages easily secures my top spot for this year's best first-person shooter game. While the narrative is somewhat decent but a bit forgettable, the refined progression system and improved core mechanics just make The Dark Ages such an entertaining game to play. Rip and tear, everyone... rip and tear!
DOOM: The Dark Ages doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it sure does kick a punch. A familiar installment in many ways, which manages to bring freshness with new mechanics and gloomy scenarios in which you will love to get lost exploring.

Doom: The Dark Ages marks a new chapter for the series, excelling in its combat system and more open map design, though it falls short in other areas.

DOOM: The Dark Ages continues to preserve the fast and aggressive gameplay style the series is known for, while drawing strength from several new mechanics and ideas. Even so, its attempts to simplify the core gameplay loop do not entirely succeed, and instead of feeling more streamlined, the experience occasionally comes across as more ordinary and less distinctive.

DOOM: THE DARK AGES is an epic experience that combines a deep story and an addictive combat style in an excellent visual and audio mold. With its diverse stages, rewarding exploration, multiple weapons, and the new combat shield, Doom positions itself as one of the strongest shooter game experiences in this generation.

The new mechanics and shield system offer a more tactical gameplay experience, but the game lacks the fast-paced movement of its predecessor. The graphics and technical performance are excellent on the PS5, and the music is nice for DOOM, but it still falls short of Mick Gordon’s energetic metal style. The Glory Kill system is missing, which weakens its impact as part of the action.

Doom The Dark Ages delivered an epic, legendary experience that is among the best in the world of shooter games, while maintaining the series' fast-paced and chaotic style, offering a wonderful variety of weapons and combat, and certainly proving its place in this year crowded with great games.

Every demon slain in Dark Ages feels like reclaiming a piece of your own soul — and that might just be the greatest thrill in gaming.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is a bold and thrilling addition to the franchise that I loved playing. It brings in mechanics I've seen from other games and implements them to a tee without losing what makes DOOM great. It looks amazing, sounds wonderful, and, most importantly, plays like a DOOM game is supposed to.
DOOM: The Dark Ages doesn’t just iterate, it transforms. It still bleeds the franchise’s DNA, but with a newfound focus on strategy, spectacle, and scale. The shield mechanics, large-scale encounters, and grim world-building push the series into bold new territory.
In the end, DOOM: Dark Ages is still a fast-paced, chaotic first-person shooter that stays loyal to DOOM’s core identity.
Overall, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the kind of sequel that doesn’t rest on its past – it expands its future. Here, id Software have taken everything that worked in DOOM Eternal and wrapped it in a new, darker skin that feels both brutal and beautiful. It’s a beautiful testament to id Software’s craft that nearly 30 years after the original DOOM redefined FPS gaming, the series is still finding new ways to innovate, while staying relevant.
Doom: The Dark Ages sees id Software pivoting away from their floaty bullet hell formula and into being the hell for bullets in a new "stand and fight" approach to combat, with tremendous results. The new hefty design makes the Slayer feel like the one man army he's always been portrayed as and delivers on being a Doom for the ages. Whilst there's some slight missteps in storytelling, music, and new gameplay elements that don't fit as well into its design, the moment-to-moment hook and metal aesthetic proves why the franchise is still the gold standard of modern FPS.
DOOM: The Dark Ages rises above expectations, firmly establishing itself among the finest entries in the franchise. The game is rich with potential and skillfully balances innovation with reverence for its legacy—though this reverence sometimes tempers the pace of change. The team at id Software has truly hit the mark, guiding Doom through a transformation reminiscent of the revolutionary leap Santa Monica achieved with God of War: a bold, forward-looking metamorphosis that remains deeply faithful to the series’ original spirit.
DOOM: The Dark Ages delivers everything you could want from a shooter and action game—and above all, everything a DOOM fan expects. It offers dynamic and refreshing gameplay, a vast arsenal of weapons, diverse mechanics, and powerful moves. The levels challenge players to bring their best, especially on higher difficulty settings, making it a strong contender in the ongoing debate over which is better: this or Eternal.
