If you like Piranha Bytes titles, you’ll love this, and if this is your first time in the world of Gothic...it could well be a little different to other RPGs you’ve played, but it will absolutely reward your patience if you click with its style.

Gothic 1 Remake entiende perfectamente lo que significa rehacer un clásico. No pretende convertirlo en un juego de rol que siga las tendencias actuales.

Is it worth buying Gothic 1 Remake if you loved the original or are just looking to dive into this world? My answer is: no. Or at least not right now. The remake is a terribly optimized game riddled with all sorts of bugs. In a few months, once the developers have fixed at least some of the issues—and the game itself may have dropped in price a bit—go ahead and head to the stores. Personally, I had a phenomenal time playing it and felt like that little kid in elementary school again, stepping into the Miners’ Valley for the very first time. The remake is great, and I can’t wait to give it another go, this time playing as the other side. I’m also really hoping that the revamped version of the sequel gets the green light. But is the remake better than the original, and is it worth choosing it over the original? To be honest, I see plenty of room for both titles to coexist on the market as equals. That way, you can play the timeless original one time and fire up the modern remake another time. Both games have their pros and cons, which defy the classic framework for evaluating games. And while I know I won’t convince the most die-hard fans, I still recommend that every fan of the series pick up this new version someday. As for newcomers who’d like to explore this universe for the first time? It’s definitely worth checking out the original, but all things considered, the remake—despite its distinctly retro gameplay and hardcore difficulty—seems like a much better starting point today.

The Gothic Remake experience is certainly not for everyone, but those willing to pluck up the courage to get through the first few intense hours of gameplay will find it well worth their while, thanks to entertaining gameplay and a vast, detailed world just waiting to be explored. However, the game inherits some of the original’s flaws, whilst adding others specific to this new remake.

Gothic 1 Remake faithfully revives the original's harsh RPG design with a strong atmosphere, rewarding progression, and memorable world-building. Technical issues and its unforgiving nature keep it from greatness.

Gothic 1 Remake remains incredibly faithful to the source material. Perhaps a little too faithful.

Gothic 1 Remake honors the classic by maintaining and improving its core elements. The slow progression is compensated by a clear evolution of the hero, while the challenging combat and dark setting shine in the new graphics engine. However, Unreal Engine 5 introduced bugs and performance drops that await correction. Furthermore, the chest-cracking minigame is excessively complex for the title's purpose.

Gothic 1 Remake is a successful resurrection of a cult classic that refuses to sand off its rough edges. Those willing to meet the gameon its own terms will find a deeply immersive RPG with a distinct identity.

Gothic Remake does an incredible job of visually updating and modernizing a punishing RPG, while keeping the spirit and soul of the classic alive. It’s a part of gaming history, and while performance isn’t great and it can be punishing, you won’t find much else like it.

I am happy to announce that I am a new fan! I was willing to adapt to what the developers wanted me to experience, and even to the hours I lost due to bugs. Gothic is an open-world action RPG that I want to recommend to everyone without an asterisk. It’s a fantastic and beautiful world, filled with challenging enemies, engaging gameplay, and a sense of wonder I haven’t felt in a long time. However, playing on console was less than ideal, and in my opinion, it should’ve been released only on PC as a timed exclusive so that a proper console version could be released later. I feel like I’m saying this too often lately, but this game is a must-play for fans of this genre. Just wait a bit until it’s been ironed out.

Gothic 1 Remake is a great reminder that old-school RPG design still has its place in gaming. I loved how The Colony makes you listen, make careful decisions, earn each step forward, and accept any setbacks. The remake respects the original’s identity while giving its prison-fantasy setting a much stronger presentation using Unreal Engine 5. For gamers who miss RPGs with danger, consequence, and real growth, this version delivers a fantastic adventure that stayed with me after long after the story concluded.

The return to the Colony turned out to be a profoundly dichotomous experience. A journey of the mind and heart that leaves you with a sweet, conscious, and almost heart-wrenching melancholy. Alkimia Interactive has performed a veritable philological miracle in terms of atmosphere, demonstrating immense courage in its determination to preserve at all costs that ruthless ecosystem and that sense of isolation and total immersion that made Piranha Bytes’ original work so successful. The title’s main problem, however, does not lie solely in a technical implementation that drags too much baggage along with it—including unstable frame rates, crippling tearing, sudden freezes, and bugs that risk compromising the gameplay experience and progression. The real knot to untie lies, in reality, within each of us. Gothic 1 Remake acts as a mirror that forces us to come to terms with our own evolution as gamers. And, in a broader sense, as human beings. It is a work we cannot help but love for its moving conceptual integrity. Yet at the same time, we struggle to digest it because of that very structural slowness and ruthlessness that clash violently with the syncopated rhythms of our lives. For those who still have a deep desire—and, above all, the “luxury of time”—to be able to “slow down,” the Valley of Mines offers one of the most visceral, authentic, and rewarding adventures of recent years. For everyone else, the encounter with this glorious, rugged, and uncompromising relic of the past may prove difficult to handle.

Gothic Remake retains the atmosphere of an old favorite but makes it playable for a new generation of gamers. It might not be the flawless modern RPG recreation that many were hoping for, but it does a nice job of explaining why Gothic still matters after more than 20 years.

"A Faithful Return to the Classic" Gothic 1 Remake delivers a deep RPG experience that retains the spirit of the original game and succeeds in a superbly visually updated world. Despite some technical issues and a limited combat system, it remains one of the most outstanding classic RPGs remakes of recent years.

Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful return to the beloved setting of the original game for its fans, improved with better graphics and more content. It’s a fascinating but tough approach to get into a style that will not give in for folks who have never played an RPG before.

The Gothic 1 Remake is a beautiful graphical upgrade of one of the most incredible RPGs of all time, and I have no doubt that returning fans will love it. However, the game’s performance issues dampen the mood, and certain new bugs and a lack of quality-of-life improvements make it less than a perfect remake. These issues and the lack of modernizing polish may also make it harder for new players to get into the game, especially when paired with the obviously and purposefully dated, difficult gameplay.

Gothic Remake is a heartfelt love letter to one of the cornerstones of Western role-playing games. With this ambitious project, Alkimia Interactive accomplishes a remarkably difficult feat: modernizing the combat system and expanding the narrative while preserving the unforgiving, gritty, and punishing spirit that made the 2001 original a timeless classic. Unfortunately, this compelling return to the Colony is held back by a troubled technical performance, plagued by frequent crashes and optimization issues that fall short of expectations. Even so, the game is clearly a labor of love—one that pays tribute to its source material while retaining all of its enduring charm. It comes highly recommended for both longtime veterans and newcomers alike, provided they are willing to endure the engine’s significant technical shortcomings or wait for the inevitable post-launch patches to smooth out the experience.

The Gothic 1 Remake is exactly what we hoped it would be, a modernized take on an uncompromising classic that does exactly what the original did, just on modern hardware with some extras thrown in to delight long-time fans. This is the game that inspired many of the RPGs that we know and love today, so those who enjoy games like The Witcher owe it to themselves to try this experience - and stick with it to be truly rewarded.
