Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a game of contrasts. I would hardly recommend it to fans of the franchise who aren’t fighting game enthusiasts; the lack of Portuguese voice acting, the almost static presentation of the story mode, and the high difficulty will quickly frustrate casual players. On the other hand, I would easily recommend it to those who are dedicated fighting game fans and enjoy diving deep into exploring every possibility with each of the limited number of characters available. If you have the patience to take a beating online until you master the mechanics, the magic of bending is there—it simply requires a lot of effort to truly master.

Avatar games might not have enjoyed the best reputation over the past couple of decades, but Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is on a completely different level. Not only is it a phenomenal feast for the eyes, but it’s also a genuinely excellent fighting game with responsive controls and an impressive amount of combat variety. It may not be overflowing with content just yet, but the development team has already promised more updates down the line. That, combined with its very appealing price tag, makes it even easier to recommend.

As a new entry in the series, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game prioritizes fresh character interactions over deeper storytelling, appealing to fans while inviting newcomers into the franchise. Its strong art direction, faithful animations, and impactful sound design capture the spirit of the original series. While fighting game veterans will adapt quickly, the lack of difficulty options may limit its accessibility for casual players. Although updates are planned to add missing features and fix technical issues, the Nintendo Switch version currently lags behind other platforms, making it worth waiting for future support.

Despite its flaws, this is the best video game ever released using the Avatar license—admittedly not a very high bar, but it sets new standards for future releases.

While light on features, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a solid 2D fighting title with fun & unique combat mechanics, clear love for the characters and source material, and has solid replayability on the online and competitive side of things.

The missing features might hurt another game much more but, Avatar Legends gameplay is so good that it still didn’t deter me from playing it a ton. Mechanically, I truly think it may be the best fighting game to come in a long time and if those issues get sorted soon, hopefully the game can see a long life cycle within the fighting game community.

Avatar Legends is therefore one of those titles that rewards those willing to dedicate time to it , just like a true martial arts master who hones their technique with training.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game’s trite campaign is just one of its many uninspired or poorly assembled parts.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game boasts stylish visuals and an accessible control scheme, but its repetitive roster, unfinished presentation, bloated combat, and underwhelming single-player content prevent it from capturing either the spirit of Avatar or the depth expected by fighting game fans.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game focused on delivering solid gameplay and succeeded admirably. However, there are some flaws in its presentation that need attention, such as the animations and missing information across the various game modes. Overall, it is a decent title for fans of the elemental benders that guarantees a good dose of honest fun.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is one of the best fighting games of the year so far. Its beautifully animated, hand-drawn 2D art style, diverse roster of characters across the Avatar series, and captivatingly in-depth system mechanics make it an absolute joy to learn and play, both with friends and online opponents as well as in the game’s singleplayer offerings. Its unbridled, uncompromised love for the source material, focus on element bending as a form of combat, and unique take on the lore also solidifies it as the best Avatar video game adaptation—a leap in quality so high you’d think an airbender was behind it. There are no tricks here, though; Avatar Legends is an exhilarating, deeply exciting fighter because it transparently radiates a love for the series and fighting games so potent that it effortlessly becomes a master of all its elements.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game succeeds because it knows what it wants to be. Rather than trying to force accessibility at every turn, it has friendly foundations before gradually revealing one of the deepest and most expressive combat systems in any fighting game in recent memory.

With undeniably gorgeous looks, and fast and intense play, this is a distinctive fighter, it just does a terrible job of getting you properly up to speed with its unique mechanics and the CPU is an unapologetic ass-kicker

Ultimately, a lackluster story mode and a lean launch roster can’t hold back what is easily one of the most mechanically refreshing 1v1 fighters I’ve played recently. Whether you're an FGC veteran looking for a gameplay-first experience or a casual Avatar fan just wanting to press some buttons and watch your favorite characters pull off incredible sequences in a gorgeously animated 2D fighter, Avatar Legends delivers where it matters most.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a budget package, but Gameplay Group International clearly knew exactly where to target in order to make one of the best Avatar video games out there. While the more casual or novice player may not get much out of Avatar Legends, I do think even the most fly-by-night of Avatar fans should consider the game at least. On the flip side, this is one of the strongest fighting game entries this year, with some titillating ideas waiting for players to discover and exploit. While the game is in good hands, I can only hope that, along with the Year 1 DLC, they also expand it to support offline and solo options.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game pairs expressive visuals with a deep, rewarding combat system that captures the spirit of the series. Sparse production values, a thin roster, uneven balance, and an underwhelming Story mode hold it back, but its strong fundamentals make it a promising fighter.

As a fan of the franchise and an admirer of fighting games, I am very happy to attest to the quality of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. The character selection is quite respectable, and five additional characters have already been announced as DLC. The system is incredibly fun and very accessible, despite an apparent initial complexity.
