And a remake can never quite replicate the first-time experience of a genre-defining original. But within its remit, Ubisoft's latest Assassin's Creed title succeeds where many remakes and remasters have failed.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a beautiful rework which retains the legacy of the original game whilst bringing some meaningful additions and upgrades. Does it mimic the magic of the 2013 outing, however? I’d say that if you have never played Black Flag, then this will feel like a fresh game to you. If you completed it 13 years ago, then you’ll still find fun in reliving the memories with around six hours of new content. With a visual overhaul, updated combat and parkour mechanics, reworked naval combat and lots of quality-of-life improvements, this is an exceptional remake and not just a quick cash grab. For Assassin’s Creed fans out there, it is a must-buy. Alternatively, you could subscribe to Ubisoft Plus and try to smash out the campaign without investing in the game fully.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a great remake of an already tremendous video game, and one I imagine I’ll continue playing long after this review goes live. Despite its removal of the present-day sequences, it still maintains the heart of the original and makes its brightest spots shine as bright as ever. Resynced now stands as my favorite game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, without a shadow of a doubt.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag returns 13 years later with a remake aimed at introducing the franchise to newcomers, preserving what worked beautifully despite a few changes that hinder the overall experience. Even so, taking the helm of the Jackdaw with Edward and sailing the seas during the Golden Age of Piracy remains absolute bliss.

Black Flag Resynced is exactly what a remake should be. It modernises the areas that have aged while understanding why people fell in love with Edward Kenway’s adventure in the first place. Not every new addition lands, and some of the modern Assassin’s Creed influences will divide opinion, but they do little to diminish what remains one of the series’ strongest entries. More than a decade later, Resynced proves why some games are better preserved than reinvented.

Ubisoft proves that the best way to honor a classic is to deeply understand what made it special, refining the combat, world, and story around Edward Kenway while having the wisdom to leave that core magic untouched.

Few games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise carry a legacy as strong as Black Flag. More than a decade after its original release, returning to the Caribbean in the shoes of Edward Kenway would already be special on its own. What’s interesting is that I began my journey in Black Flag Resynced in the middle of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ campaign, which ended up offering an interesting perspective on this remake and on the series’ own identity. After spending dozens of hours in one of the franchise’s more recent entries, revisiting Black Flag rebuilt for the new generation served almost as a reminder of what made Assassin’s Creed so popular during its golden era. And the surprise is realizing that Resynced not only modernizes a classic, but also brings enough new additions to justify its existence. We return to the golden age of piracy and once again take on the role of Edward Kenway, a privateer driven by an unrelenting pursuit of wealth, fame, and freedom. In a Caribbean ruled by greed, we follow his journey alongside legendary figures such as Blackbeard, Charles Vane, Jack Rackham, and Stede Bonnet while sailing through paradisiacal islands, colonial forts, and deadly waters filled with enemy frigates. But the remake also seeks to expand the original narrative. The new arc “A World Without Gold” adds an inédit epilogue composed of eight missions that further deepen some of the campaign’s central themes, especially the relationship between ambition and freedom. The phrase “In a world without gold, perhaps we would have been heroes” perfectly summarizes this new approach. After all, much of the tragedy experienced by pirates comes precisely from the inability to abandon the pursuit of power and riches.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a well-made, but inessential remake that loses more than it gains.

All said, I regard Resynced with the exact same sentiments as Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Resynced goes beyond the scope of a traditional remaster and adjusts the content of Black Flag to make improvements to the experience (what you’d expect for a remake).

More importantly, it avoids the design pitfalls of recent RPG-era Assassin’s Creed titles, delivering a focused experience that never feels padded or bloated. After spending over 40 hours with it, I came away not only impressed, but genuinely reminded of why I fell in love with this series in the first place.

A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage. Black Flag might be Resynced, but its heart remains.

Nevertheless, Edward Kenway returns to star in an adventure that borders on the outstanding, full of excitement, secrets, spectacle, rum, and chickens to feed. A pirate, yes, but with a heart.
