Tense horror games are oftentimes miss, but Konami is back and so is SIlent Hill, and I couldn’t be happier.

Silent Hill: Townfall will get your heart-pumping at times and delivers plenty of the atmosphere this series is famous for, but that familiarity is also to the game's detriment as its narrative and world don’t offer many surprises. Meanwhile, clunky stealth and occasional design missteps result in a game that's often more frustrating than frightening. Silent Hill: Townfall has its moments, but those expecting the game to live up to this series' recent high standards may want to look for real estate elsewhere.

Townfall had the potential to stand alongside the best *Silent Hill* titles: a powerful story, three ordinary characters bound by a dark destiny, a setting tailor-made for an unsettling atmosphere, and established gameplay mechanics that required no major overhaul. However, something went wrong in the execution; the result is a horror adventure that starts strong—introducing a few effective new features—but eventually loses momentum. It is hampered by unconvincing mission and level design that leads to long, exhausting stretches of backtracking, further plagued by a roster of enemies that often falls short and relies on "cheap tricks."

Silent Hill: Townfall is another brave step forward for the franchise. Moving away from the traditional third-person perspective heightens the dread and anxiety, as you tentatively avoid the many threats that linger within.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a decidedly strong new entry in a series that has been straining to restore faith in itself. Townfall smartly draws on cultural anxiety in step with generally horrific imagery to make a game that more than earns the Silent Hill moniker. While I'm sure the next game we see will be totally different, I would love for this team to get another go. I think it gets a bit too brave with withholding vital information, and certain puzzles are utterly nightmarish, but I'd be missing the forest for the trees with how rich this game is.

Returning to the tried and trusted formula of the series' roots, Silent Hill: Townfall is a more traditional entry in the horror franchise that succeeds most when replicating what's come before it. The new Scottish setting is a standout, but its other new elements are a disappointment. Silent Hill: Townfall won't go down as a classic. However, there's still more than enough for returning fans to love.

The best parts of Alien Isolation and Resident Evil's first-person entries have merged with Silent Hill's rusty and foggy DNA to create an original nightmarish take on the series. Silent Hill: Townfall is a breath of fresh air for the genre and a must-play for horror fans.

Between Ordell’s amnesia, the time-jumping (and looping) narrative, and the multiple endings, Townfall’s design similarly spirals ever inward, revisiting again and again the same themes and locations, but each time cutting ever closer to the heart of what they truly represent.

All things considered, Townfall is a remarkable display of maturity on the part of its developers. It didn't do everything perfectly—just consider the somewhat predictable developments in Simon's investigation—but it left its mark.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a terrifying and incredibly immersive experience, putting heavy emphasis on hide-and-seek horror. The first-person perspective is a new take on the series, but it tackles familiar, psychological themes, making it worthy of the Silent Hill name.

Silent Hill: Townfall from developer Screen Burn and publisher Konami is a step in a new and right direction for the old series. Relying more on stealth than fighting and focusing more on the narrative that builds a compelling mystery makes for a good and terrifying time.

Townfall is a title that should particularly appeal to die-hard fans of the series, especially those who weren't keen on the changes Bloober Team made in the Silent Hill 2 remake or the genre mashups in Silent Hill f, and would prefer a more classic approach. Screen Burn Interactive has successfully captured the horror of the early entries, enhancing it with their own unique narrative and modern visuals.

Despite some rough mechanics, Silent Hill: Townfall delivers one of the series' more intriguing mysteries and left me wanting to return to St. Amelia to uncover everything I missed.

Silent Hill: Townfall might be a much more contained experience than recent series entries, but thanks to a strong story, unsettling atmosphere, and tense gameplay, it nonetheless manages to shine just as bright.

Silent Hill: Townfall delivers an intriguing and ultimately moving story that dovetails with thematically relevant puzzles. It’s just a shame its combat gets swallowed up in a fog of subpar stealth mechanics.

Silent Hill Townfall blends stealth, action and tense horror into another compelling take on the Silent Hill formula. Its monster designs and scares disappoint, but strong combat, excellent puzzles and a well-written story make up for those shortcomings. It may not reach the series' greatest heights, but Townfall comfortably earns its place in Silent Hill's ongoing revival.

Silent Hill: Townfall stands out above all for how complete and effective its horror experience feels. Its realistic environmental art, formidable enemies, strict resource management, and nerve-racking combat are all worth experiencing firsthand for fans of the genre. It also brings plenty of strong ideas and gameplay concepts to the table, but more importantly, it once again proves that the appeal of Silent Hill is not limited to the place called Silent Hill.

So if we consider that the last couple of years has given us an informal Silent Hill “trilogy” with the remake of 2, Silent Hill f, and now Silent Hill: Townfall, it’s fair to say that in some ways Townfall is the most limited of the three. But you could argue that in other, important ways it’s the most well-produced and experimental, too.
