Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a fun shooter that goes above and beyond to act as an accurate facsimile of Nintendo 64 shooters, particularly Goldeneye.
Agent 64 manages to capture some of the charm from GoldenEye 007, including gunplay that feels right at home on mouse and keyboard. Still, there are some rough edges that detract from the experience, including boring story objectives and poor multiplayer map design.
Even if it expects fond memories of GoldenEye 007 to get players on board, Agent 64 offers a solid, if unremarkable, retro experience with a strong amount of content.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die knows exactly who it is made for, targeting a niche audience of people who loved Rare's N64 first-person shooters and still want something similar today.
A successful—and in some ways even brilliant—attempt to create a game in the spirit of Nintendo 64 shooters. As a nostalgic experience, Agent 64 is a great game. But as a standalone title, it doesn't stand out in any way and will likely bewilder those outside the game's target audience.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a charming and remarkably faithful throwback to the Nintendo 64 era of shooters, with varied spy missions, multiple objectives, co-op, multiplayer, and plenty of additional modes. Its deliberately archaic gunplay, weaker enemy AI, and the need to replay missions to unlock later acts will not appeal to everyone, but fans of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark should find exactly the kind of nostalgic experience they are looking for.

Agent 64 is clearly hearkening back to the glory days of console shooters ala Goldeneye 64, wearing its inspiration loud and proud on its sleeve.
I’ve played many similar games in various forms over the years – including official remakes and the like – but Agent 64: Spies Never Die very much stands above them all with its tongue-in-cheek charm. Very much a title that will be installed on my PC for a while to come, and I really hope that this makes its way to consoles, as the love and passion that has been poured in definitely needs to be rewarded and shared across other platforms so that all players can recapture the joys of Agent 64: Spies Never Die. I mean, come on – get it on Switch 2 as fast as possible!
But who wants modern when Agent 64 shows how much it can be to jump in a time machine and pretend it’s still 1997? This is how homages to the past should be done – without pretense or winking, and a health dose of fun sprinkled liberally throughout.
While I played GoldenEye 007 on my purple, see-through Nintendo 64 back in my youth, I will admit I don’t really have an attachment to it. You know what else came out that same year? Final Fantasy VII, and that changed my life forever. Agent 64: Spies Never Die, however, did successfully manage to remind me why I subjected myself to every kid on my block for as long as I did. It’s an addictive loop, even at its most frustrating. There are places I feel this game could have evolved the formula or resolved the issues, but I get the direction, and I respect it. My biggest issue, and maybe this is unfair, is that the game tries too hard to feel like the classic game and not enough to set itself apart. It is fun, though, and in the end, who could ask for more?
Agent 64: Spies Never Die is an excellent tribute to the unforgettable Goldeneye 007, especially thanks to the sheer volume of content available, but it fails to rise to the level of a good game in its own right and ends up feeling overly derivative. Furthermore, although the project boasts exquisite art and level design, the issues plaguing both end up dragging down the entire experience.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die is an homage to a bygone era of shooters that we don’t see attempted today. It’s retro to a fault, and it’s unremarkable campaign hurts it somewhat, but thankfully its other modes does a lot of the heavy lifting. Agent 64: Spies Never Die offers a ton of replaybility for you and your friends to enjoy for as long as you want, and it doesn’t demand anything for the enjoyment it gives.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die is about as close as a perfect game can get. It sets out to make a game that is inspired by N64 shooters and does well with flying colors. There are a handful of frustrations, but that does not invalidate the excellent done with the story, the buckets of content, and the classic multiplayer that does not feel outdated at all. Sometimes old dogs do not need to learn new tricks.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a fun homage to a retro game, standing out as one of the few titles that captures the Nintendo 64 era. It’s enjoyable, with updated controls, a classic feel, a fun story, and interesting levels. Its generic interface, forgettable soundtrack, and forced attempt to extend the campaign with Cypher hold it back from being the perfect spiritual successor to Rare’s classics.
