Seasons After Fall is a soft and tender tale, filled with poetic inspiration. The cell shading offers amazing views, sublimated by a perfect use of colors and contrasts. In terms of gameplay, unfortunately, the game fails in mantaining the same quality.

For a 2D puzzle-platformer, the levels are naturally integrated into the environment – and one of the most naturally integrated that I have ever seen in any game of the same genre. Utilizing the changing seasons to its advantage, Seasons After Fall feels less like a traditional platformer and more like an innovation, jumping from tree branch to vine, frozen geyser to snowball, all the while bending the seasons to your command. The narrative and setting aren’t built around the level design, but rather the design enhances the narrative and setting, allowing for a gorgeous and immersive experience.

Seasons After Fall has been out for some time on the PC and is only recently made its way over to the consoles. Being woken up by a soft female voice, you'll be taking control of "the seed" as it possesses a nearby fox in order to traverse the lengths and depths of the forest in order to perform the ritual of the seasons.

It has been an amazing year for games in 2017 thus far, with huge releases such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Horizon Zero Dawn just to name a few. A large majority of these big releases have something in common, in that they all feature extensive storylines in a massively open world. While it may be a blast to explore the vastness of space or the impressive landscape of Hyrule, sometimes I need a game that gives me a smaller more focused experience. This is the exact reason I absolutely adored the time I spent with Seasons After Fall.

Seasons After Fall is a great looking and very charming puzzle/platformer with a bit of a Metroidvania thing going on. It might be short, but it's definitely fun from start to finish. It's a relaxing experience that allows you to explore beautiful hand-painted locations that come to life as you change from season to season. The puzzles are fun and never feel overwhelming, which is always a plus for this type of game. If you're looking for a solid puzzle/platformer on PS4, then give Seasons After Fall a try!

In the end, Seasons After Fall is another great platformer that places value in puzzles and dexterity over combat. The puzzles don't feel overly difficult, but their execution is done well. The same can be said for the season changes, where it becomes very obvious which season needs to be used, but it feels satisfying anyway. It feels like a game for those just starting out in the genre, but the presentation is so well done that more experienced gamers won't mind giving it a spin. If you have an afternoon to spend on a game, Seasons After Fall will make that time feel worthwhile.
