Call of Duty WWII is a really neat package. The campaign, even if still too predictable, is powerful and enjoyable (while it lasts). Headquarters and War Mode gave a new coat of paint to the PvP and Nazi Zombies is a tough and deep experience.

A return to the old good times of Call of Duty that brings more from that time than we were expecting. The campaign feels short and too linear, while the multiplayer options shine with a different light compared with previous CoD experiences. A good game, but not the best one on the series.

Call of Duty: WWII will be fascinating to study from a business standpoint: will consumers embrace the product they have long been clamoring for and how will Activision handle its business strategy moving forward? Will they dive exclusively back into World War II until gamers tire of it again or cycle between different eras from here on out? Whatever happens, there's a fantastic game at the center of this future case study that proves that no matter the ballyhoo, Activision will ensure a superb experience is delivered.

The developers hammer home what made Call of Duty so great in previous years, while also adding a bunch of modern content and gameplay twists of their own.  As far as Call of Duty games go, WW2 is an instant classic.

A spectacular release that has a strong chance of becoming a fan favourite as one of the best Call of Duty releases in years.

My hat's off to the developers at Sledgehammer who are helping a new generation understand the sacrifices of those who died in the Second World War.

When looking at the big picture, Call of Duty: WWII is absolutely a fun time. With a multiplayer that includes a ton of unlocks and a new social hub, as well as a zombies mode that features some incredibly intense moments, players could easily get lost spending hours upon hours playing with other people. Aside from the unfortunately short campaign with flat and boring characters, I believe Sledgehammer Games succeeded in bringing the series back to where it started, while at the same time putting their own spin on the Call of Duty franchise to make it relevant for the newer audience.

Bottom line, Call of Duty: WWII's campaign may not quite manage to fully satisfy players' cravings for a terrific war story, but its online play is an addictive and multifaceted blast.

Given how bad it could have been – hell, was expected to be – it's quite the pleasant, sometimes harrowing, surprise.

In the same way, "Call of Duty: WWII" feels like a game in which the prospect of moving on is somehow scarier than staying in the battlefield for one more tour.

World War II was the right move. Call of Duty reaches back to its roots to bring players an entry worthy of the series' namesake. The campaign is emotional, multiplayer is classic, and Nazi Zombies is downright dark and terrifying. No matter which kind of player you are, there is something for everyone, whether it's a cinematic story, a competitive and social multiplayer, or an immensely difficult battle against undead Nazis. Call of Duty: WWII is another incredible package of experiences, each distinct from the others, but tied together by the unifying themes of World War II that deserve your attention.

With a campaign that brings some of the most historical battles of the European Theater to life like never before, multiplayer that combines the best of the old and the new, and one of the most visceral Zombies games the series has had, Call of Duty WWII is a triumphant return to its roots, reminding us why those early games were so good in the first place.

I feel like I go through so many motions year-in and year-out with these games, but one thing is for sure – I always enjoy myself by the end of them, and CoD WWII is no exception.

With a terribly below mediocre campaign, an average zombies mode, and an excellent multiplayer option, Call of Duty: WWII manages to hit all the marks. But not in the way that it should. I had high hopes, and was surprised that the real gem I found was not the one I was originally hoping to. It's not great, it's not good, it's okay.
