Sonic Forces is not a terrible game, but it ain't a good one. Full of cheesy dialogues, a storyline that doesn't make any sense, and weird additional gameplay mechanics, I feel that the Sonic Team's urge to create something fresh and new to the franchise is actually pushing them to overdo it. If only they would listen to their fans and stick to a traditional side scrolling platformer like this year's release of Sonic Mania.

An average storytelling, bad controls and a boring level design make it hard for Segas Hedgehog to climb back on the Jump N`Run Olympus. If you're looking for a quick and fun game you'll still get something out of Sonic Forces.

Despite its silly story and inconsistent gameplay, Sonic Forces is a fun adventure and a step in the right direction for 3D Sonic titles

The new hedgehog adventure features a terrible level design and a very low difficulty. However, it makes you want more thanks to its charisma, making this a good base that needs to be very well polished.

It's not a great game, but it's solid. It looks nice, plays smooth, and the gameplay variety is solid. It's an average 3D Sonic game at a budget price, and that's not really a bad thing.

There is too much wrong with Sonic Forces to recommend it to everyone, but if you're hankering for 3D Sonic, and you've finished every other Sonic game, then check it out on sale.

Sonic Forces is not going to rewrite the history books. It's yet another Sonic game that struggles when adding that extra dimension. Even though the level design is some of the best yet, you just can't shake the feeling that it's a bit of fan service until they launch Sonic Mania 2.

Sonic Forces is by no means a career-killing disaster like Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric or Shadow the Hedgehog were, but it still a disappointment after all the wonderous hours of fun Mania offered.

Although Sonic Forces has some interesting ideas and a few moments of legit fun, it’s ultimately disappointing and a significant step backwards from what came before.

The saying “Too many cooks spoil the broth” certainly rings true with Sonic Forces. It's a game where despite it's many level types none of them quite leave a lasting impression. As a result, it comes off as merely average in all departments with the sole exception being the visual design. Sonic Forces is far from the train wreck that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was, but it doesn't come close to reigniting  the series' magic in the way Sonic Mania did.

A somewhat exhilarating and spectacular journey in (almost) every 3D Sonic game. Unfortunately all its mechanics are shallow and mixed up.

Sonic Forces may be a misstep from this year's Mania, but it's still an enjoyable title. While it suffers from a host of problems with pacing and performance, it still is worth a weekend rental with its surprisingly entertaining plot and great music.

The good news is that Sonic Forces is not the disaster it could easily have been. There's a fairly enjoyable, silly romp here, that's got some nicely handled fan service. The bad news is that it still makes so many of the same mistakes synonymous with the series' 3D past.

To answer our initial question, Sonic Forces hasn't managed to convince us that it is a must-play title in the series, but has at least alleviated some of our initial fears. A relatively short five-hour or so campaign, a lack of difficulty that ramps up unexpectedly on the final boss, and the non-coherent blend of 3D sequences, 2D sections and cutscenes make Sonic Forces a mixed experience, with positive moments undone by weaker areas. It isn't poor as many feared, and for children it could well be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. For the ‘hardcore' (and likely slightly older) generation of Sonic fans, though, perhaps it's best to accept that - for better or worse - Sonic isn't what it used to be. Stick with Sonic Mania for classic Sonic fun, and let Forces attract a new, younger audience.

For die hard Sonic fans, Sonic Forces will indeed give you more Sonic with a few new minor perks. Character customization gives the game a fun touch of personalization and collecting new gear incentivizes you to just keep grinding it out even when repetitive gameplay starts to bore you.

Sonic Forces is a flawed and unremarkable game, despite occasionally providing moments of decent enjoyment.

We get the impression that Sonic Team wanted Forces to be the Best Sonic Game Ever, with a Greatest Hits package of everything good in the series, but they didn't have the time, money or talent to accomplish this.

There's certainly something in Sonic Forces for fans of the franchise and there are some steps in the right direction. However, the story, world, and characters never come together into a cohesive whole.

But compared to say, Super Mario Odyssey, you get the feeling that it's just another example of a fun and shallow Sonic game in a long line of fun and shallow Sonic games.
