Admittedly, I have a soft spot for Star Ocean: The Last Hope, but this is merely a good remaster of a flawed game.

In the end, Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope brought me back to a time when I had to sit down and thoroughly shut myself out of the real world and immerse myself into this world — more specifically the star ocean. Exploring space and discovering huge new worlds creates a great playing experience, and with this remastered version this game only looks even better. Even though a few years have passed, Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope is close to the same game I remember, but I appreciated the nostalgic reminder that games are challenging and autosave wasn't always a thing.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope - 4K & Full HD Remaster picks up the decent JRPG developed in 2009 by tri-Ace and refurbishes it with more than positive results.

It's really hard to recommend this game to first-timers with all of the problems and the JRPG stereotypes. I can't recommend it to long-time returning fans unless they owned a PS4 Pro. At least with a PS4 Pro you can choose the lipstick color.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope - 4K & Full HD Remaster is a decent new version of a decent game: the graphical options are good and allow to have a beautiful experience on the more modern screens. The combat system is still intriguing, but everything else is pretty dull and predictable, without any new feature to justify the buy if you already played it seven years ago.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope straddles the line between highs and lows – it's both exhilarating and bombastic in equal measure, even though its story never reaches the same euphoria as its predecessor. It makes up for this with a tactical and action-packed combat system, interesting crew management system, tons of content, and a marvellous remaster job that has the game running beautifully on both PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Good remaster of a trashy space opera with idiosyncratic charm that misses combat claim as well as variety in sidequests.

The planets of the galaxy could not help Star Ocean Last Hope 4K & HD Remaster to fix the mistakes of their past versions.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope HD and 4K Remaster is a beautifully rebuilt hidden JRPG gem from prior era of gaming. The game plays slow, and that drags the action down during battles, but adds depth and purpose to the world exploration. The upscaling is thorough and very well accomplished, and with a high quality soundtrack to accompany you, Star Ocean: The Last Hope is bound to provide hours of quality fun.

A great comeback of space action jRPG after almost a decade. Thanks to significant improvement on graphics, it's approachable for players today, but the best visuals will get only PS4 Pro owners (3K, Ultra HD).

Good job for the remastered, with brand new options for HD e 4K support. If you missed the game, now it's time to play a classic jrpg from the PS3/Xbox 360 era.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is an ambitious but flawed game. Exploring planets can be thrilling, but spending time with some of the characters will wear on the nerves. The combat can at times be deep and strategic, but it happens so frequently that the pleasurable aspects of it are often dulled. The graphical remaster looks great, but the presentation of cut scenes and the voice acting are bargain basement, especially compared to something like Persona 5. For those interested in Star Ocean as a franchise, the discount on this remaster could make it worth your while. For people looking for a great JRPG though, 2017 has seen a slew of great current and remastered games to make Star Ocean: The Last Hope essential.

It really isn't all that bad, but there's much better to play and a great JRPG is never too far away.

The fun combat system is somewhat held back by terrible characters and the story is not exactly memorable enough to make you care for them, but as a whole experience, it is enjoyable to some extent.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a massive game with plenty to do and see. While the acting might be very poor and the character models weird and unnerving, the rest of the game is littered with things for the player to do, regardless of if they are adventurous or just want to rush to the end. It terms of good RPGs, this isn't the best, or even the best in the series, but it's still an excellent title that only holds itself back enough to notice. Thankfully, it's not back far enough that you won't care.

Star Ocean 4 is, as far as I'm concerned, a modern classic, and I am so, so glad to have had the excuse to play it through yet again.

Through all of its faults, I’ve really enjoyed my time with Star Ocean The Last Hope a lot more so than Integrity and Faithlessness and at only £16.99 (PSN) or £15.99 (Steam), I highly recommend giving it a go if you’re looking for a game to sink some serious time into.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope was one of my first 'real' JRPGs that I played and reliving the game on the PS4 in much better quality with a more stable framerate was amazing for me. This is a game that you can pick up and play in either short bursts or long stretches (although save points are far apart, the 'rest mode' on the PS4 really helps) and offers a lot of variety as well as logical thinking and re-reading of notes to find your goal.

Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope is a slow-burn JRPG that you play when you have a spare hour or two, and nothing else major to do – Just to sit down in the Captain’s chair and blast away to other worlds. Is it as action-packed as other JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy XV or some of the Tales games? No. But that’s not a bad thing by nature… The 4K remaster does a great job of bringing this game up to modern standards, and brings a level of options tweaking that I can only hope will become industry-standard.
