FIFA 19 is another great entry in EA's long-running football series. With the addition of the Champions League and improved gameplay mechanics, it provides enough realism to its presentation while still being fun to play. The Journey: Champions and FUT may not be considerable deviations from last year but it still gives players more to do; it also helps that both of these modes are This iteration isn't one that completely changes the game, instead makes a few adjustments to make the most enjoyable FIFA yet.

EA has gone to great pains to incorporate their new license into the title and it shows from the game modes all the way up to the game's tagline. Champions Rise and so has this franchise to the occasion.

FIFA 19's numerous improvements on and off the pitch mean it overtakes its predecessor as the best football game released on a Nintendo system, and it's still a technical marvel when played in handheld mode. That said, EA's decision not to improve Ultimate Team and Career – arguably the two most popular modes – feel like a missed opportunity. It's better than last year's game, then, but not as much as it could have been. If you're new to FIFA, then add one point to the score below; this is the best soccer game on Switch by a mile. However, if you're a grizzled veteran - as pretty much anyone who is contemplating a purchase is likely to be, given the advanced age of EA's premier sports franchise, then the score stands.

If FIFA 18 seemed like an good start for the franchise on Nintendo Switch, it's difficult to say FIFA 19 is not a disappointment. Even if it's an enjoyable soccer game, there has been no great improvements on the pitch and you won't find anything new in FUT or Career Mode. At least, Champions League is here, with Online Gaming with friends and Kick Off 2.0 options for your games. But we were hoping EA Sports would try to make a better game. Anyway, as FIFA 19 is alone on the pitch of the Switch, it's still the best.

While the full-fat FIFA 19 experience delivers in spades, the Switch version feels dated and is lacking in key gameplay improvements — even some from years ago. Unfortunately, it's easily the worst way of experiencing FIFA 19 this year.

FIFA 19 shows that sometimes it's not all about reinventing the game so much as it is about making improvements to what already works so well. FIFA 19 is probably the best FIFA to date, but EA will not want to repeat the tweak-performance next time out.

FIFA 19 follows in its footsteps year after year to enjoy another title of the most complete football simulator on the market.

FIFA 19 makes some welcome tweaks and revels in its Champions League license, leading to a fantastic sports sim sadly held back by microtransactions.

FIFA 19 is really solid overall with what feels like more changes than we've seen in the last few years combined. Ultimately, when you're making this many fundamental changes to a soccer game, you're going to have certain aspects that lack a little bit of polish, but it'll be interesting to see how EA continues to balance and improve the game over time. I also wonder at this point whether the next few years will be spent polishing this fresh feeling experience or if EA will continue to mix up the tested formula.

All together now, and sing "THE CHAMPIONS!" EA Vancouver returns to the pitch with 19. Joining the party this year is a contest of the highest order; a notable omission that is now front-and-center in another well done entry.

While Kick-Off's party games in particular are a highlight, FIFA 19 improves upon last year's outing in almost every department. One of the best football games around, FIFA 19 delivers the most fluid and fun entry yet, and is the kick up the backside the series needed. Back of the net.

More and more each year it feels like EA could just charge for an upgrade pack rather than a full game.

Despite some major flaws (lack of changes in the career mode, some license mishaps and others), FIFA 19 is pretty much the best game in the series. Authentic European finals will astound every fan of virtual football and the perfect House Rules mode provides some truly excellent fun.

This is definitely a good soccer game. It's just not as good as it could be. It should be immediately apparent, due to a lack of modes, if this game isn't for you. For that reason, I might suggest renting the game before jumping in feet first.

FIFA 19 has some new additions but it feels like this year was focused on honing in on a truly refined soccer experience.

While in the last few years, FIFA games have been focused on making flashy, headline improvements in terms of modes or presentation, FIFA 19 instead chooses to make those improvements on the pitch. Off the pitch, there's not quite as much to talk about (other than the excellent House Rules Kick-Off matches), which is obviously a little disappointing, but thanks to a consciously slowed down pace and much more involved and methodical on-pitch gameplay, FIFA 19 proves to be a solid upgrade, and an excellent simulation of the beautiful game.

It's a great start, though, and the big match atmosphere is fantastic — bringing these competitions back to FIFA has been something I've been hopeful of for many years, and EA has delivered in spades.
