Spirit of the North is an adventure that places atmosphere and artistic expression at the heart of its identity. Through its imagery, music, and deliberately understated storytelling, Infuse Studio creates an experience that seeks to engage players on an emotional level rather than through conventional gameplay spectacle. Its journey unfolds across evocative Nordic landscapes, ancient ruins, and abandoned places that hint at the remnants of a forgotten civilisation. By allowing the environment to carry the narrative, without relying on dialogue or traditional exposition, the studio establishes a distinctive approach to storytelling, encouraging players to piece together the history of this world through what they see and discover. This emphasis on atmosphere is reflected in almost every aspect of the presentation. The landscapes, architectural remains, and supernatural effects associated with the game's spiritual elements give the world a coherent visual identity, while the soundtrack reinforces its sense of solitude and quiet wonder. The fox is equally well suited to this setting. Its presence offers a perspective that feels removed from the conventions of the traditional adventure protagonist, allowing the journey to unfold through observation and interaction rather than dialogue or elaborate characterisation. At its best, Spirit of the North understands the value of restraint, giving its environments room to breathe and allowing individual scenes to make an impression without overstating their significance. The same level of assurance is not always evident in the gameplay. Although exploration and environmental puzzles provide a consistent framework for progression, the mechanics rarely develop enough to maintain a comparable level of interest. Puzzles tend to rely on relatively familiar ideas, with limited variation in their execution, while platforming sections occasionally expose shortcomings in movement and control precision. The environments can also feel more expansive than the activities they contain, leaving stretches of traversal that do little to deepen the experience. These limitations become increasingly apparent as the adventure progresses, particularly when the promise of discovery is not matched by equally engaging interactions. The narrative presents a similar contrast between intention and execution. Its reliance on environmental storytelling is entirely consistent with the game's broader creative direction, and the absence of dialogue helps preserve the contemplative atmosphere. However, the limited information provided about the world and the events that shaped it can make the story difficult to follow. Some of the ideas introduced along the way suggest greater thematic and emotional depth than the narrative ultimately achieves. A more developed account of the civilisation's fate and the journey's central relationship could have given these elements greater significance without necessarily compromising the game's minimalist approach. Ultimately, Spirit of the North is an adventure whose artistic ambitions are more fully realised than its gameplay design. Infuse Studio has a clear understanding of the atmosphere it wants to create, and the visual and audio presentation frequently succeeds in bringing that vision to life. The problem is that the experience built around it does not always offer enough variety, refinement, or narrative substance to sustain the same level of engagement. Its slower pace and minimalist structure are deliberate creative choices, but they cannot entirely compensate for puzzles that lack depth, occasional frustrations in traversal, or an exploration loop that becomes predictable over time. Despite these shortcomings, Spirit of the North remains an appealing experience, particularly for players who value atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and a more reflective approach to adventure games. Those expecting intricate puzzles, consistently polished platforming, or a richly developed narrative may find it less satisfying. Its appeal ultimately depends on an appreciation of what it sets out to achieve, rather than on the mechanical depth of what it offers. I regard Spirit of the North as a distinctive, occasionally captivating adventure that never quite fulfils the potential of its own artistic vision. Its world is memorable, its presentation often beautiful, and its approach to storytelling gives it a character of its own. Yet the limitations of its gameplay and narrative prevent those qualities from coming together as convincingly as they might have. It is not an adventure that excels across the board, nor one that is likely to satisfy every kind of player. What it does offer, however, is a quietly evocative journey that makes its strongest impression through the images it creates and the atmosphere it leaves behind. In that respect, its achievements are worth recognising, even if the experience as a whole falls short of the promise of its underlying ideas.

Spirit of the North simply doesn’t hold up well on the Switch, and with poor gameplay and visuals, its relatively short 3 to 4-hour length felt much longer as a result.

Spirit of the North is a lovingly crafted indie adventure that's let down by some wonky platforming and simple puzzling, while the mysterious explorative adventuring evokes the memory of Journey, just without quite achieving the same emotional impact.

Exploring Iceland as a furry fox friend has been a real treat. It's delicious eye candy with a satisfyingly chewy center. Yes, there were times when I hoped for a little more direction in solving puzzles. Those brand new help cards on the PlayStation 5 dashboard sure would have been nice (fingers crossed we see those when the game officially releases). That said, Spirit of the North is too beautiful and captivating to be disappointed for long. If you love games like Lost Ember, I can't recommend adding Spirit of the North to your collection enough.

Even as a fairly short game, Spirit of the North managed to accomplish what it had set out to achieve – to tell us a story without words and to slow us down. A truly unique experience where the visuals and music were its greatest strengths, it shows that a game does not have to be filled with excitement for it to be gratifying. It wasn’t a perfect adventure, but it served as an important reminder to always be curious about your surroundings, to take your time, and to stop and smell the flowers.

Infuse Studio has done a fantastic job in remastering Spirit of the North's visuals for PS5, but while it looks gorgeous, this edition neglects the elements that needed an update most. Though the controls remain stiff and your objectives aren't always clear, anyone willing to look past this will find a wonderful experience at the core. If you've been searching for a new adventure game, Spirit of the North is short but sweet and despite these flaws, comes recommended.

Spirit of the North Enhanced Edition may look great at 4K and run smoother at 60 FPS, but with no gameplay changes, barely any meaningful use of the DualSense, and a lack of gameplay improvements the indie-adventure doesn't offer much of a reason to play. This enhanced edition isn't bad by any means, but it just doesn't offer much of a reason to check it out for new or returning players, especially given the price increase.

I really wanted to enjoy Spirit of the North as someone who is passionate for Nordic folklore, meditative video game experiences, and foxes. Unfortunately, amid the game's performance issues and lackluster gameplay, the title comes across as unfocused at best and unplayable at worst. .

Spirit of the North may look beautiful, sound beautiful, but is a confusing and boring mess. It tries too hard to be artsy while disregarding the importance of fun gameplay and an interesting story. During their short playtime, players are required to interpret the weak narrative and their overall purpose in the game. The only replayability comes from completing the collect-a-thon. However, that provides zero satisfaction to the player and has a hard time trying to stay relevant to the gameplay and story at large.

Spirit of the North is a decent game let down some by subpar controls and underuse of the player character's abilities. It still manages to be somewhat entertaining but is far from a must-play.

Spirit of the North 2 is a visually stunning open-world adventure that confidently stands apart from its predecessor, featuring an emotionally moving orchestral soundtrack that wraps around the vivid scenery like a loving embrace. Making progress and completing puzzles feels rewarding, and even just exploring the vast environments feels like a reward all the same. The story is engaging and emotional, and it's easy to grow personally attached to the little fox as they learn just how big their world truly is.

Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition is a game trying so hard to replicate and better its peers that it loses its way. From the story and lore of the world, to the puzzle solving and even the visuals, everything about it feels held back and the little it does well isn't enough to justify its lengthy playtime.

Spirit of the North - Enhanced Edition offers up a majestic, yet melancholy narrative that will bring some peace to a weary mind, or at least try to lull you to relax. Sadly, that lull can often be disrupted by the controls, as their inaccuracy might take you out of the moment and create frustration. The game does still manage to be more entertaining than not, especially with its visuals and music.
