If you were even half-aware of games news at the end of 2021, you will already be a bit interested in this game. It's brimming with fun, uniquely committed to co-op gaming, plays solidly and distinctively, and usually discards one cool idea in favour of another before there's time to get bored. Now-standard graphical compromises have been made for Switch, and the typical perk of playing handheld is questionable for an always-split-screen co-op-only game. Nonetheless, it keeps the frames moving well enough not to undermine its Game-of-the-Year sparkle. It Takes Two and the good old Switch may not be a perfect marriage, but it's probably worth sticking it out, now that we're five years in.

Alas, what should be a runaway creative success for the game’s director, Josef Fares, is marred by a tone-deaf narrative element which shows that asinine ethnic caricatures unfortunately still exist in video games.

It Takes Two is an amazing coop experience, a rollercoaster of love that always succeeds in giving new gameplay mechanics to players, as well as interesting characters. A true playable romantic comedy that lasts 10 hours that will leave some pretty good memories. And another success for Hazelight.

Though some may be disappointed that its story never capitalizes on its full potential, It Takes Two is a masterpiece of creativity and cooperative gameplay that makes it one of the most memorable experiences in modern gaming.

It Takes Two is some of the most fun I've had with a game this year. Me and my partner screamed with endless delight at its conveyor belt of cute, innovative ideas for a genre that seldom tries new things outside of a few beloved exceptions.

Even if you aren’t big into co-op, or aren’t even that much of a gamer, you should still give this one a shot, as it is the perfect game for couples or even friends to enjoy together.

It Takes Two is just a couple of steps away from being a perfect cooperative game. Although the story ends in a great way, and its second and third acts are wonderful, the first hours are quite boring and simple. The gameplay is in constant motion and presents us with interesting ideas that may be to the liking of the two people who experience this adventure, but there are times when it is clearly seen that a player can have a better time, and the change in mechanics shows a Something simple level design that almost never manages to exploit its full potential.

It Takes Two is endlessly creative. Gameplay speaks to narrative, while narrative informs gameplay, and the entire experience just feels incredibly polished and detailed. It nails relationships in ways that so many games-and even other forms of media-just can't. It asks the player to engage with the the story through mandatory co-op to tell the tale of a couple on the verge of divorce, rediscovering the good in their relationship. It's not just one of the best action platformers in recent memory, but also a fantastic and unique story representing a dynamic that you don't often see represented in games, at least not to this depth and nuance.

There's a reason (err, several) why It Takes Two earned its Game of the Year accolades in 2021, and Switch owners now have the opportunity to play one of the best co-op games of late. The story remains meaningful, the puzzles innovative. The title continues to succeed in navigating interpersonal strife long after its release and the title's ending being freely available to find online. Even though I knew of some of the events that occurred before reviewing, I was often surprised by its powerful storytelling. It runs incredibly well on the Switch, to boot. Some of the typical Switch-based quirks may be coming with, but it still delivers on a compelling and emotional experience without the compromises that usually accompany a Switch port. With Friend Pass baked into the game, Switch owners are able to play with those in the same room as well as afar. I would personally recommend using a voice comms platform should you play remotely, though.

The game's story definitely tries to contextualize its setpieces, mechanics and shifting tones, but the disparate aspects of the game could not feel more divorced from each other, making them easy to enjoy and critique apart, but also similarly easy to slam for their ultimate incompatibility as a whole. I'm not crazy about the story, but it's serviceable and has big "R-Rated Pixar" energy, mostly being a vehicle for the thrill of actually playing the game with a friend. Maybe that's all It Takes Two has to be and, honestly, that's fine by me.
